Chapter 8: The Brother I Never Knew
I read the letter three times.
Because my brain refused to accept the words.
My brother.
I didn’t have a brother.
At least, that was what I believed my entire life.
My father had always told me I was an only child.
My mother died when I was young.
There were no siblings.
No secrets.
No hidden family.
But there it was.
My father’s handwriting.
His words.
His confession.
Alannah,
There is something I should have told you years ago.
I stopped reading.
Daniel watched me carefully.
“You didn’t know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked down.
“I thought so.””
“Who is he?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Who is my brother?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Michael.””
The name meant nothing.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“What happened?””
Daniel sat across from me.
“Your father had a son before he met your mother.””
I stared.
“He never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael made mistakes.””
“What kind?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“The kind that put your father’s company at risk.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“The accountant?””
Daniel nodded.
I stood.
“Are you saying my brother stole from us?””
“I’m saying he was involved.””
The word involved felt carefully chosen.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Ethan and Noah.
Then at me.
“Your father discovered Michael had been using company funds.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything was connected.
The money.
The lawyer.
The threats.
Daniel leaving.
But there was still one question.
“Why did my father hide this from me?””
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“Because he wanted to protect you.””
I laughed.
A tired, painful laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone keeps making choices for me.””
Nobody spoke.
“I was an adult.””
My voice shook.
“I was his daughter. I was Daniel’s wife. I was the mother of those boys.””
I pointed toward Ethan and Noah.
“And everyone decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“You’re right.””
I turned away.
For years, I thought the worst thing Daniel did was leave.
Now I realized the worst thing was that he made me live inside a lie.
The next morning, Daniel helped us find Michael.
It wasn’t easy.
The man had changed names.
Moved states.
Built a completely different life.
When we finally found him, he agreed to meet.
The meeting took place in a quiet restaurant.
I sat across from a stranger who shared my father’s blood.
He looked older.
Tired.
And when he saw me, his eyes filled with tears.
“Alannah.””
I hated that he knew my name.
“You know who I am?””
He nodded.
“I always knew.””
My hands tightened.
“Then why didn’t you find me?””
He looked down.
“Because I was ashamed.””
I wanted to be angry.
But mostly, I felt empty.
“My whole life, I thought I was an only child.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe that.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice broke.
“Because I destroyed everything.””
He told us the truth.
He had struggled.
He had made terrible decisions.
He had taken money from the company.
But when my father discovered it, Michael panicked.
He tried to fix it.
He failed.
Then Daniel found out.
And that was when everything collapsed.
“My father threatened Daniel?””
Michael looked down.
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you knew?””
“I knew enough.””
Michael continued.
“He told me he would expose everything. But your father protected me.””
I frowned.
“Protected you?””
“He said I was still his son.””
The words hit me.
Because my father had hidden his mistake.
But he had also loved him.
“I don’t understand.””
Michael wiped his eyes.
“He wanted to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t he?””
“Because he was dying.””
Silence.
My father’s illness.
The one nobody explained clearly.
The one everyone called “complicated.””
There was another secret.
Another thing taken from me.
Michael looked at Daniel.
“You kept your promise.””
Daniel nodded.
Barely.
“What promise?””
Michael looked at me.
“The promise to keep you and the boys safe.””
I looked at Daniel.
The man I had hated for thirteen years.
The man who hurt me more deeply than anyone.
And I realized something painful.
He had made the wrong choice.
But maybe it wasn’t because he didn’t love us.
Maybe it was because he didn’t know how to.
That night, I found one more letter.
Daniel had kept it hidden.
Not from me.
From himself.
And this one was not from my father.
It was from Daniel.
Written the day he left.
