Chapter 9: The Confession That Changed Everything

The gun was pointed at my chest.
For the first time that night, I understood how close I had come to losing everything.
Esteban's hand was shaking.
But his eyes were steady.
"Put the documents on the table," he ordered.
I slowly raised my hands.
"All right.""
"Now.""
I placed the black folder down.
Alejandro wasn't in the room.
The investigators were outside.
Lucía had the copies.
But the original documents were in front of me, and Esteban was holding a gun.
I looked toward Valeria.
She stood near the doorway, crying silently.
"Let her go," I said.
Esteban laughed.
"You're still trying to protect people?""
"She's not involved in this.""
"She signed the agreement.""
"Because you lied to her.""
Valeria shook her head.
"I didn't know, Mateo. I swear.""
Isabella turned toward her.
"Stop pretending to be innocent. You wanted the money as much as anyone.""
Valeria looked at her.
"You told me Camila was dying. You told me Mateo had already agreed.""
"Because that was the plan.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"The plan?""
Isabella realized what she had said.
She looked at Esteban.
He moved the gun slightly.
"Enough.""
But I had heard it.
So had the recording device.
I needed them to keep talking.
"Tell me something, Aunt Isabella.""
She stared at me.
"What?""
"Why did you choose Valeria?""
Her expression hardened.
"Because you were foolish enough to bring her into your life.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
"She was easy to manipulate. She wanted your attention, your money, and your promises. We offered her something she wanted.""
Valeria began sobbing.
"You told me Mateo was going to marry me.""
Isabella laughed bitterly.
"Did you actually believe that?""
Valeria covered her mouth.
I looked at my aunt.
"You planned to use my affair against me.""
"We planned to use your weakness.""
The words struck harder than I expected.
She continued.
"You were predictable, Mateo. You wanted admiration. You wanted beautiful women telling you how important you were. You wanted to believe you could do whatever you liked without consequences.""
I looked down.
She wasn't wrong.
And that was what made it so painful.
Esteban interrupted.
"Take the documents.""
Ricardo moved toward the table.
But I wasn't finished.
"What happened to my father?""
Ricardo stopped.
Isabella looked away.
Esteban kept the gun trained on me.
"Your father made his own choices.""
"Did you kill him?""
Nobody answered.
I stepped forward slightly.
"Did you?""
Esteban's face hardened.
"Your father was dying anyway.""
My heart stopped.
"What does that mean?""
"He had a heart condition. He was under enormous stress.""
"Did you interfere with his treatment?""
Esteban smiled.
"Your father should have stopped asking questions.""
I felt the room spinning.
"Did you?""
Ricardo looked toward the door.
"Esteban, stop talking.""
But Esteban was angry now.
For years, he had controlled the story.
He had convinced me that Alejandro was the thief, that my father was a victim of bad luck, and that every financial problem could be blamed on someone else.
Now he seemed unable to stop himself.
"He called me that night," Esteban said.
"He said he was going to the authorities. He threatened to expose everything.""
I swallowed.
"And?""
"I told him to calm down.""
"Did you?""
He looked at me.
"Your father was given medication that should never have been combined with what he was already taking.""
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
"Who gave it to him?""
Esteban shrugged.
"The doctor.""
"Which doctor?""
"Salas.""
I felt my knees weaken.
Dr. Mauricio Salas.
The same doctor whose credentials appeared on Camila's altered medical records.
"Did you pay him?""
Esteban smiled.
"Your father was an expensive problem.""
I looked at Ricardo.
He had gone pale.
"Isabella?""
My aunt lowered her eyes.
"Don't involve me.""
"You were there.""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know what Esteban was going to do.""
Esteban turned toward her.
"Don't pretend you were innocent. You signed the documents.""
Isabella's face changed.
"You said it was only about the money!""
"It was.""
"You told me the medication issue would never become part of this.""
I stared at her.
"Medication issue?""
She covered her mouth.
Esteban raised the gun.
"Shut up!""
Then the door opened.
"Police! Drop the weapon!""
Everything happened at once.
Esteban turned.
A shot exploded through the room.
I felt a sharp impact against my shoulder and fell against the table.
Valeria screamed.
The officers rushed inside.
One tackled Esteban.
Another forced Ricardo to the floor.
Isabella collapsed beside the chair, crying.
I clutched my shoulder.
Blood seeped between my fingers.
But I barely felt it.
I was looking at Esteban.
He was lying face down, his hands cuffed behind his back.
His eyes met mine.
Even then, he smiled.
"You think you've won?""
I tried to stand.
An officer pushed me back.
"Stay down, sir!""
Esteban laughed.
"You still don't know what your father left behind.""
Then he looked toward the black folder.
"Ask Alejandro why he really helped your wife.""
I was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound that had grazed my shoulder.
The doctors treated it quickly.
The injury wasn't life-threatening.
But the news I received afterward was far worse.
Esteban, Ricardo, and Isabella had been arrested.
Valeria was being questioned.
The USB drive and original documents had been recovered.
The prosecutor confirmed that the recording contained several admissions about the fraudulent trust amendment and the medical interference.
But there was another problem.
The evidence concerning my father's death was incomplete.
The medication records had been altered.
The doctor who administered the treatment had disappeared.
And Esteban was refusing to answer further questions.
I sat in the hospital corridor with my shoulder bandaged.
Alejandro stood beside me.
For several minutes, we said nothing.
Then I turned toward him.
"What did Esteban mean?""
"About what?""
"Why you helped Camila.""
Alejandro looked at me.
I swallowed.
"Why did you really help her?""
He sat down.
"Because she asked me.""
"That's all?""
He looked away.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He removed a photograph.
It showed Camila sitting beside my father in his hospital room.
My father was wearing a blue sweater.
He looked tired but conscious.
The photograph had been taken on the night he died.
I stared at it.
"Who took this?""
"Your father asked me to.""
I looked at Alejandro.
"You were there?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he called me before Camila arrived.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"What did he say?""
Alejandro took a deep breath.
"He told me he had made a terrible mistake. He said Esteban had been stealing money, but that the bigger problem was someone had been using your name to hide the transactions.""
I looked down at the photograph.
"He asked me to protect Camila and the child she might have one day.""
I frowned.
"One day?""
Alejandro nodded.
"Your father knew Camila wanted children. He told me that if you ever became too consumed by the business, I should make sure she wasn't left alone.""
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you had already chosen to believe I was a thief.""
I couldn't argue.
He continued.
"Your father gave me a sealed letter that night. He asked me to deliver it to you only if Esteban tried to change the family trust.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Where is it?""
Alejandro hesitated.
Then he removed another envelope.
It was old.
The paper had yellowed around the edges.
My father's handwriting covered the front.
For Mateo. Read only when you are ready to understand what loyalty really means.
I took it.
Inside was a single handwritten page.
My son,
I have spent my life believing that protecting our family meant protecting our name, our company, and our wealth.
I was wrong.
I trusted men who praised me while stealing from me. I ignored the warnings of the man who stood beside us when we had nothing.
Alejandro is not the enemy.
I stopped reading.
My eyes blurred.
The letter continued.
If you ever find yourself choosing between money and the people who love you, remember this: a company can be rebuilt. A fortune can be recovered. But a family that has learned to live without you may never want you back.
I lowered the letter.
Alejandro watched me.
I continued reading.
There is one more thing I need you to know.
The trust was never meant to make my grandson rich.
It was meant to make him free.
My throat tightened.
Free from the mistakes I made. Free from the people who will try to use his name. Free from the belief that being a Villarreal means he must spend his life protecting a fortune.
At the bottom, my father had written:
If Mateo ever becomes the kind of man who chooses his wife and child over his pride, then my grandson will have inherited something more valuable than twenty-eight million dollars.
I folded the letter.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Then I looked at Alejandro.
"I destroyed your life.""
He didn't deny it.
"Yes.""
"I believed a lie.""
"Yes.""
"I let you take the blame for something my father and Esteban did.""
"Yes.""
I swallowed.
"Can you ever forgive me?""
Alejandro looked toward the hospital doors.
"Forgiveness isn't something you can demand because you've finally become uncomfortable with your own behavior.""
I lowered my head.
"I know.""
He stood.
"But Camila needs someone who will be there tomorrow. And the day after that. And when your son wakes up crying at three in the morning.""
I looked up.
"Will you help me?""
"I'll help Camila. I'll help the baby. What happens between you and me is something else.""
I nodded.
It wasn't the answer I wanted.
But it was the answer I deserved.
A nurse approached us.
"Mr. Villarreal?""
I stood immediately.
"Yes?""
"Your wife is awake. She asked to see you.""
I hurried toward the recovery room.
Camila was sitting up, looking exhausted but alert.
Her eyes moved toward my bandaged shoulder.
"What happened?""
I sat beside her.
"Nothing serious.""
"Mateo.""
"I was shot.""
Her face went pale.
"What?""
"It's just a graze. The doctors treated it.""
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, I thought she might cry.
Then she whispered:
"You promised me you wouldn't do anything foolish.""
I almost smiled.
"I know.""
"Did you get the documents?""
"Yes.""
"Are they safe?""
"Yes.""
She looked toward the doorway.
"Where's Alejandro?""
"Outside.""
"Tell him thank you.""
"I will.""
She studied my face.
"Did you find out what happened to your father?""
I nodded.
"Some of it.""
"And?""
I took her hand carefully.
"Esteban confessed that he arranged for my father to receive medication that shouldn't have been given.""
Camila's eyes filled with tears.
"I knew something was wrong that night.""
I looked at her.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"Your father tried to tell me. He said he was afraid. Then he suddenly became confused.""
I felt a cold weight settle in my chest.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't have proof. And because I was afraid you'd do exactly what you did tonight.""
I looked down.
She was right.
I had walked into a trap because I was angry.
I had nearly been killed.
And I had almost left my wife and son without anyone to protect them.
"I'm sorry," I whispered.
Camila didn't answer.
Then a nurse entered.
"Mrs. Villarreal, the neonatal specialist is here.""
A doctor approached the bed.
He carried a tablet.
"Mr. and Mrs. Villarreal, I have an update about your son.""
I stood.
"Is he getting better?""
The doctor hesitated.
"His condition has improved slightly. But there is something we need to discuss.""
Camila reached for my hand.
The doctor looked at both of us.
"Your baby has been responding to treatment, but we've discovered an issue in his medical file.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What issue?""
"Someone accessed his prenatal records and changed the emergency contact information.""
"Who?""
The doctor turned the tablet toward us.
There were two names listed.
Mine.
And Valeria Montes.
I stared at the screen.
"Why is her name there?""
The doctor shook his head.
"We don't know yet. But there's another detail.""
He enlarged the document.
The emergency authorization had been submitted three weeks earlier.
It contained my signature.
And a note stating that Camila Villarreal was not to be contacted in the event of a medical emergency involving the child.
I felt my blood turn cold.
Then the doctor spoke again.
"Mr. Villarreal, someone has also requested that your son be transferred to another medical facility once he is stable.""
"Who requested it?""
The doctor looked at the screen.
"Your father's legal representative.""
I stared at him.
"Ricardo?""
"Yes.""
I looked at Camila.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Then she whispered:
"Mateo, there's something else.""
I leaned closer.
"What?""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Before I fell down those stairs, someone came into our house.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
Camila swallowed.
"Your mother.""
I froze.
May you like
My mother had died when I was seventeen.
And the woman Camila was describing had been wearing her wedding ring.
