Chapter 8: The Price of Protecting My Son

Lucía refused to let me leave alone.
"You are not walking into a meeting with three suspected criminals without police protection," she said.
I stood beside the front door.
"Valeria is in that car.""
"And if you get arrested, injured, or disappear, who protects your wife and son?""
I looked at Alejandro.
He was already making another call.
"Lucía is right," he said.
I turned toward him.
"You want me to leave her there?""
"No. I want us to get her out without giving them what they want.""
He placed his phone on the table.
"I've contacted someone I trust in the state prosecutor's office. They're arranging a team.""
Lucía nodded.
"Good. We also need to secure the original documents.""
I handed her the black folder.
"Take everything.""
She examined the contents.
Then she looked at the USB drive.
"What's on this?""
"Bank records. My father's documents. Everything we found.""
Alejandro shook his head.
"Not everything.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
He reached into his briefcase and removed another USB drive.
"This is the copy Camila gave me.""
I stared at it.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I wanted to verify it before anyone saw it.""
Lucía connected her laptop to a portable security device and examined the files.
Several folders appeared.
One was labeled:
*ESTEBAN — ORIGINAL TRANSFERS*
Another:
*RICARDO — TRUST AMENDMENTS*
The third was simply:
*ISABELLA — FINAL INSTRUCTIONS*
Lucía opened it.
A scanned document appeared.
It was an email sent from Isabella's personal account to Esteban.
The date was three months earlier.
Once the child is born, the trust must be transferred immediately. If Camila survives, we will need another arrangement. Mateo must remain unaware until the funds are secured.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Alejandro.
"She knew.""
"Yes.""
"She knew Camila was pregnant when she made this plan.""
"Yes.""
I gripped the edge of the table.
"She's my aunt.""
Alejandro didn't respond.
I remembered Isabella at my wedding.
She had adjusted my tie and told me that my father would have been proud.
She had cried when Camila announced her pregnancy.
She had brought baby clothes to our house.
Now I wondered whether every visit had been an opportunity to inspect the trust documents.
Lucía opened another email.
This one was sent by Ricardo.
The medical authorization has been arranged. We need the mother incapacitated before the birth. Once the child is delivered, the guardianship arrangement can be activated.
I stepped backward.
"Medical authorization?""
Alejandro leaned closer.
"Open the attachment.""
It was a scanned hospital form.
The patient's name was Camila Villarreal.
The document authorized a medication adjustment.
But the signature didn't belong to her doctor.
It belonged to someone else.
I recognized the name.
Dr. Mauricio Salas.
He had been the physician who supervised Camila's pregnancy before she changed hospitals.
I remembered meeting him once.
He had told me everything was under control.
I had thanked him and left.
Lucía stared at the document.
"This needs to be verified immediately.""
I called the hospital.
The medical director answered after several attempts.
I explained the situation.
He asked me to wait.
Then he returned with a disturbing response.
The medication instructions in Camila's original file had been modified.
The hospital couldn't yet determine who had authorized the change.
But the electronic audit log showed that the amendment had been entered using Dr. Salas's credentials.
"Is he still working there?"" I asked.
"No, Mr. Villarreal. He resigned three weeks ago.""
I looked at Alejandro.
Three weeks.
The same time Camila had begun investigating the trust.
The same time she had asked me to come home more often.
I felt sick.
"Do you know where he is?""
The director said he would contact the authorities.
I ended the call.
Alejandro looked at me.
"Someone tried to interfere with your wife's treatment.""
I nodded.
"And they were preparing a legal arrangement in case she died.""
Lucía closed the laptop.
"This is no longer just a financial investigation. We have potential evidence of medical interference, forged documents, and an attempt to manipulate guardianship.""
I looked toward the hospital across the city.
"Then we need to protect Camila.""
The prosecutor's team arrived shortly before one in the morning.
Two investigators accompanied us.
They advised against contacting Isabella directly.
Instead, they would coordinate a controlled meeting using the location from Valeria's photograph.
The SUV was tracked to a private property outside the city.
The property belonged to a company registered under Ricardo Méndez.
The plan was simple.
I would agree to meet them.
Alejandro and the investigators would remain nearby.
Lucía would preserve the evidence and coordinate with the prosecutor.
I would wear a small recording device.
For the first time in my life, I was entering a room knowing that someone might be trying to destroy me.
And I wasn't sure whether I deserved to be afraid.
Before leaving, I called the hospital.
A nurse answered.
"How is Camila?""
"She's stable, Mr. Villarreal.""
"And the baby?""
"He's still in intensive care. His condition remains serious, but his vital signs have improved.""
I closed my eyes.
"Can I speak to my wife?""
"She's resting.""
"Please tell her I'm coming back.""
The nurse hesitated.
"She asked us to give you something if you called.""
"What?""
"A message.""
I waited.
"She said, 'Don't do anything foolish just because you finally understand what matters.''"
I almost smiled.
Even from a hospital bed, Camila knew exactly how I behaved when I was frightened.
"I won't," I whispered.
But I wasn't sure whether I was telling the truth.
The property was an old private estate surrounded by high walls and security cameras.
The SUV stood near the entrance.
I recognized Valeria through the window.
She looked pale.
Isabella was sitting beside her.
Esteban stood outside the vehicle, speaking to a security guard.
When I stepped out, he turned.
"Mateo.""
His smile was almost convincing.
"Thank you for coming.""
I looked at Valeria.
"Is she all right?""
Esteban glanced at her.
"She's perfectly fine.""
Valeria's eyes met mine.
She looked terrified.
I walked closer.
"Let her out.""
"Of course.""
Esteban opened the rear door.
Valeria stepped out immediately.
I moved between her and the vehicle.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"I'm sorry.""
"Not now.""
Isabella approached.
She wore a cream-colored suit and the same pearl earrings she had worn at my father's funeral.
She smiled sadly.
"Mateo, you've had a difficult night.""
I stared at her.
"You arranged this?""
She frowned.
"Arranged what?""
"The guardianship document. The transfer. The messages.""
She sighed.
"You're misunderstanding everything.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked toward Esteban.
He nodded.
"Perhaps we should go inside.""
I refused.
"No. We're talking here.""
Isabella's smile disappeared.
"You've always been emotional, just like your father.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Don't talk about him.""
"Your father made terrible decisions. I spent years trying to protect this family from them.""
"By stealing my son's inheritance?""
She looked genuinely offended.
"That money was never intended for an unstable child.""
I stepped closer.
"He's my son.""
"He's an innocent child who will inherit a business built on lies.""
I stared at her.
"You helped create those lies.""
Her expression changed.
For a moment, I saw something beneath the polished exterior.
Anger.
Not grief.
Not regret.
Anger at being challenged.
"Do you know what your father did?"" she asked.
"Tell me.""
"He took money from the company. He used it to cover his mistakes. Then he left Esteban and Ricardo to clean up the mess.""
"That's not what the documents say.""
"Documents can be changed.""
I looked at her.
"Just like signatures?""
She went quiet.
Esteban stepped forward.
"Mateo, let's not turn this into something ugly.""
I laughed.
"You're standing in front of me after using my identity, stealing millions, and threatening my pregnant wife. What exactly would you call it?""
He lowered his voice.
"Your wife should have stayed out of things she didn't understand.""
I took a step toward him.
"Did you change her medication?""
His expression barely moved.
"Be careful what you accuse people of.""
"Did you?""
"Your wife had a complicated pregnancy.""
"That's not an answer.""
Isabella interrupted.
"Mateo, you're making a mistake. You can still walk away with your family intact.""
I stared at her.
"What do you want?""
She held out her hand.
"The USB drive.""
I took it from my pocket.
Esteban smiled.
"Good.""
I didn't hand it over.
"First, Valeria leaves.""
Isabella glanced at her.
"She signed the agreement. She's part of this now.""
Valeria shook her head.
"I didn't know what I was signing.""
Esteban turned sharply.
"Enough.""
She flinched.
I looked at him.
"Don't speak to her like that.""
For the first time, his expression lost its calm.
"You think you're in a position to give orders?""
I held up the USB drive.
"I think you're in a position to negotiate.""
He stared at it.
Then he nodded toward the building.
"Come inside.""
I glanced at Valeria.
"Stay beside me.""
We entered the estate.
Inside, a long wooden table stood beneath an expensive chandelier.
Three documents had been placed in front of a leather chair.
The first was the trust amendment.
The second was a release of liability.
The third was a declaration stating that Camila had voluntarily appointed Valeria as the child's guardian.
I stared at the documents.
"Where did you get these?""
Ricardo Méndez stepped out from a side room.
He was older than I remembered, with silver hair and a perfectly pressed suit.
"Good evening, Mateo.""
I felt my stomach turn.
"Dr. Méndez.""
He smiled.
"Please. After all these years, call me Ricardo.""
I looked at the documents.
"You're the one who prepared these?""
"I prepared several legal instruments. Their purpose has been misunderstood.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
He sighed.
"Your father understood that certain arrangements required discretion.""
"Did you forge it?""
Ricardo didn't answer.
Instead, he slid a pen toward me.
"Sign the confirmation. The trust will be transferred, and this unfortunate situation will disappear.""
I looked at the release of liability.
It would absolve Esteban, Ricardo, and Isabella of responsibility for the financial transactions.
It would also declare that Camila's medical emergency had no connection to any outside interference.
I looked up.
"You want me to sign a document saying nobody did anything wrong.""
"Correct.""
"And in return?""
"Your son receives a generous settlement.""
I laughed.
"His inheritance is twenty-eight million dollars.""
"Money is not everything, Mateo.""
I stared at him.
"Funny. That's what people say when they're trying to steal yours.""
Esteban slammed his hand against the table.
"Sign it!""
Valeria jumped.
Isabella stood.
"Mateo, don't make this harder than it needs to be.""
I looked at the three of them.
Then I placed the USB drive on the table.
"Before I sign anything, I want to know one thing.""
Ricardo folded his hands.
"What?""
"Did my father know you were planning to take the money?""
For the first time, nobody spoke.
Then Esteban laughed.
"Your father knew everything.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"What does that mean?""
Esteban leaned forward.
"He knew the money was being moved. He approved the original arrangement.""
"Then why did he write that letter?""
"Because he changed his mind.""
I stared at him.
Esteban continued.
"Your father was going to expose us. He was going to give everything to Alejandro and destroy the family.""
I stepped closer.
"What happened to him?""
Esteban looked directly into my eyes.
"Your father should have stayed quiet.""
My recording device was still running.
I knew the investigators outside had heard enough to understand the significance of his words.
But then Ricardo noticed the small device beneath my jacket.
His expression changed.
"Esteban.""
Esteban looked at him.
"What?""
Ricardo's eyes moved toward my chest.
"He's recording.""
The room exploded into movement.
Esteban lunged toward me.
I shoved the table aside.
Valeria screamed.
Isabella grabbed the USB drive.
And somewhere outside, I heard the sound of police sirens.
But before the officers could reach us, Esteban pulled a gun from his jacket.
He pointed it directly at me.
"Give me the original documents.""
I froze.
May you like
Then he smiled.
"Or your son won't be the only Villarreal who doesn't make it out of this alive.""
