Chapter 8: The Heir Nobody Knew Existed

Marcus drove home in silence.

The photograph lay on the passenger seat.

Every few minutes, he glanced at it.

I knew what he was thinking.

Robert had been married to Eleanor for forty-two years.

They had built a family together, survived business failures, celebrated birthdays, and raised Marcus in a house where loyalty was treated like a sacred promise.

Now, someone was telling us that Robert had fathered another child.

Not only that.

Eleanor had known.

She had apparently helped protect the child.

"Do you believe her?"" I finally asked.

Marcus kept his eyes on the road.

"I believe Linda saw something.""

"That's not what I asked.""

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I don't know.""

I looked out the window.

"Your father may have had an explanation.""

"Maybe.""

"Or there may be something we're missing.""

Marcus nodded.

But he didn't look relieved.

When we reached home, Noah was waiting in the living room.

He had fallen asleep on the sofa, still wearing his grandfather's sailing jacket.

Mrs. Collins had placed a blanket over him.

Marcus stood beside the sofa for a long moment.

Then he gently lifted Noah into his arms.

Our son stirred.

"Dad?""

"I'm here.""

"Did you find the treasure?""

Marcus looked at me.

Then he smiled faintly.

"Not yet, buddy.""

Noah rested his head against his father's shoulder.

"Grandpa said you'd find it.""

Marcus kissed his forehead.

"I think he was right.""

The next morning, Daniel arrived with a preliminary report.

He placed several documents on the dining table.

"We've identified the hospital where Catherine Miller was transferred.""

Marcus looked up.

"Where?""

"St. Mary's Medical Center in Massachusetts.""

"Is she still there?""

"No. But we found a discharge record under a different surname.""

Daniel turned the page.

"Catherine Miller became Catherine Brooks.""

I frowned.

"Why Brooks?""

"Her mother's maiden name.""

Marcus examined the document.

"And the baby?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Male. Born December 22, 2018.""

I looked at the date.

Three days before Eleanor's death.

"Where is he now?""

"According to the last available record, he was placed under the care of a guardian.""

"Who?""

Daniel slid another page across the table.

The name was printed clearly.

*Thomas Miller.*

Marcus laughed bitterly.

"So he hid his own wife's child and then became the guardian?""

"Apparently.""

"Why?""

Daniel opened another folder.

"There's a complication. The child's birth certificate lists no father.""

Marcus stared at him.

"Then how do you know Robert was involved?""

Daniel placed a handwritten letter on the table.

"This was found among Eleanor's personal belongings. It was addressed to Catherine.""

Marcus opened it.

The letter was brief.

Dear Catherine,

Robert has promised to make sure your son is safe. I know the circumstances are painful, but please understand that I do not blame the child.

He deserves a life untouched by the mistakes of adults.

If Thomas ever discovers where you are, contact me immediately.

Eleanor.

Marcus read it twice.

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

Eleanor had known.

She had chosen to protect the child.

And she had written that letter only days before she died.

"Why would she help Catherine?"" I asked.

Daniel answered carefully.

"Perhaps because she believed Catherine was in danger.""

Marcus looked at the final line.

"Then Thomas wasn't protecting the child.""

"No," Daniel replied.

"He may have been controlling him.""

At eleven, Marcus received another call.

This time, it was James.

"Sir, I found something in the marina's old records.""

"What?""

"Your father maintained a private account for Blackwater Island. It wasn't connected to the main family trust.""

Marcus sat forward.

"Who controlled it?""

"Originally, Robert Bennett. But the account was transferred after his death.""

"To whom?""

"Northstar Heritage.""

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"Can you trace the funds?""

Daniel nodded.

"Send everything to my office.""

James continued.

"There's another detail. The account has been paying for a property in Massachusetts.""

Marcus frowned.

"What property?""

"A residential address near the hospital where Catherine was treated.""

Daniel immediately opened his laptop.

"James, send me the address.""

"Already done.""

A few seconds later, an email arrived.

Daniel examined the details.

Then he looked up.

"Marcus, I think we found them.""

The property was a modest two-story house in a quiet neighborhood.

White siding.

Blue shutters.

A small garden.

A bicycle leaning against the front porch.

It looked nothing like the kind of place someone connected to the Bennett family would choose.

Marcus parked across the street.

I sat beside him.

"Are you sure?""

Daniel checked his notes.

"The property is registered to Northstar Heritage. The utility accounts are in Catherine Brooks's name.""

Marcus looked toward the house.

A woman stepped onto the porch.

She carried a laundry basket.

Her hair was darker than in the photograph, and she looked older, but there was no mistaking her face.

Catherine Miller.

She turned toward the street.

Then she saw us.

The basket slipped from her hands.

Clothes spilled across the porch.

She stared at Marcus.

And whispered something we couldn't hear.

Marcus stepped out of the car.

"Catherine?""

She didn't move.

He walked slowly toward her.

"My name is Marcus Bennett.""

Catherine looked as though she might collapse.

"I know who you are.""

"Then you know why I'm here.""

She shook her head.

"Please leave.""

"We need to talk.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

She looked over her shoulder.

Then she glanced at the street.

"Because Thomas knows when people visit this house.""

Marcus stopped.

"Is he here?""

"No.""

"Where is he?""

"I don't know.""

Marcus showed her the photograph.

Catherine covered her mouth.

"Eleanor.""

"She protected you.""

Catherine's eyes filled.

"She protected my son.""

Marcus nodded.

"Is he here?""

Catherine looked toward the upstairs window.

A curtain moved.

Then a young boy appeared.

He had dark brown hair and a small scar near his left eyebrow.

He looked about eight years old.

Catherine followed Marcus's gaze.

"That's Daniel.""

Marcus swallowed.

"Daniel?""

"My son.""

"Is he...""

Catherine closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

Marcus took another step.

"Is he my father's son?""

Catherine nodded.

Tears ran down her cheeks.

"Robert was his father.""

Marcus stared at the boy.

The child looked back at him.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Daniel opened the front door.

"Mom?""

Catherine quickly wiped her face.

"Go inside, sweetheart.""

The boy looked at Marcus.

"Who is he?""

Catherine couldn't answer.

Marcus crouched slightly.

"I'm Marcus.""

The boy tilted his head.

"Are you the man from the photographs?""

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

"What photographs?""

Daniel disappeared into the house.

A moment later, he returned carrying a small wooden box.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs of Robert.

Robert holding Daniel as a baby.

Robert sitting beside Catherine.

Robert standing in front of the lighthouse on Blackwater Island.

Marcus stared.

His father had known this child.

He had visited him.

He had been part of his life.

"How long?"" Marcus asked.

Catherine looked down.

"Robert visited for nearly three years.""

"Three years?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because Thomas threatened to expose everything.""

"Expose what?""

Catherine took a trembling breath.

"That the money used to support Daniel came from the Bennett family trust.""

Marcus frowned.

"That was my father's money.""

"Yes.""

"Then why would Thomas have a problem with it?""

Catherine looked at him.

"Because he was the one who arranged the payments. He wanted control over the account.""

Daniel Reeves stepped forward.

"Mrs. Brooks, did Robert ever mention the marina agreement?""

Catherine nodded.

"He told me Thomas and Charles were using the property to finance something illegal.""

"Did he know about the forged documents?""

"Yes.""

"Did he report it?""

Catherine's face changed.

"He tried.""

Marcus stepped closer.

"What happened?""

Catherine looked toward the upstairs window.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Your father came to see me the night before he died.""

Marcus felt his heart stop.

"What?""

"He told me he had found evidence that Richard Cole was stealing from the company. He said he was going to confront him the next morning.""

Marcus shook his head.

"My father died of a heart attack.""

Catherine looked at him.

"That's what Thomas told everyone.""

"Was it?""

She swallowed.

"No.""

Before Marcus could ask another question, a car pulled into the driveway.

A black sedan.

Catherine turned pale.

"Oh, God.""

Marcus looked toward the vehicle.

"Who is that?""

Catherine grabbed his arm.

"You have to leave.""

"Why?""

"Because he's here.""

The driver's door opened.

A man stepped out.

Silver hair.

Dark suit.

Leather briefcase.

Charles Whitmore.

He looked directly at Marcus.

Then smiled.

"Well, this is an unexpected family reunion.""

Marcus stepped in front of Catherine.

"What are you doing here?""

Charles closed the car door.

"Visiting an old friend.""

Catherine shook her head.

"Charles, you promised.""

He ignored her.

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Your father should have listened to me.""

Marcus's voice dropped.

"Did you kill him?""

Charles smiled.

"That's a very serious accusation.""

"Did you?""

Charles adjusted his cuff.

"Ask your uncle. He was there.""

Then he looked toward Daniel, the little boy.

"Hello, Daniel.""

The child immediately stepped behind his mother.

Charles's smile disappeared.

"Your father would be disappointed to see how much trouble you've caused.""

Marcus moved forward.

"Don't speak to him.""

Charles raised both hands.

"Relax. I'm only here to collect what belongs to me.""

He opened his briefcase.

Inside was a legal document.

Catherine looked at it and began shaking.

Marcus took the paper.

It was a guardianship transfer.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Catherine.

But she hadn't signed it.

And the effective date was tomorrow.

Marcus looked at Charles.

"You're trying to take this child?""

Charles smiled.

"Not trying, Mr. Bennett.""

May you like

He pointed toward the signature.

"I already have legal authority.""
