Chapter 4

I stopped packing.

I looked at Rebecca.

She was standing in the doorway, twisting her hands together.

She looked scared.

"What do you want?" I asked.

Rebecca stepped into the room.

She closed the door behind her.

She locked it.

"I need to tell you something," she said. "Something important. About Mom. About Daniel. About everything."

I stared at her.

Rebecca had always been Evelyn's favorite.

Her mini-me.

She'd been just as cruel to me as her mother had been.

Just as judgmental.

Just as cold.

"Why should I believe anything you have to say?" I asked.

Rebecca's face fell.

"I know I haven't been nice to you," she said. "I know I've been... terrible. But I'm scared. And I think you're the only one who can help."

"Help with what?" I asked.

Rebecca took a deep breath.

"Mom isn't just stealing from the business," she said. "Daniel is helping her."

I froze.

"What?"

Rebecca nodded.

"He's been helping her for years," she said. "Falsifying the books. Making transfers. Covering her tracks. He knows everything. About the money. About the man. About all of it."

I sat down on the bed.

I felt sick.

Daniel.

My husband.

He'd been helping his mother steal from his own family.

For years.

And he'd never said a word.

He'd let me be humiliated.

He'd let me be called a thief.

All to protect his mother.

And himself.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

Rebecca looked at her hands.

"Because I've been getting paid too," she whispered. "Mom has been giving me money. To keep quiet. To look the other way. I thought... I thought it was just extra cash. I didn't realize how much she was taking. I didn't realize she was going to leave Dad. I didn't know about the man. Not until today. And now... now I'm scared. If Dad finds out I knew... if Grandpa finds out... they'll disown me. They'll never speak to me again. And if Mom goes to prison... she'll take me down with her."

She looked at me.

Tears in her eyes.

"I want to help you," she said. "I want to make it right. I can give you proof. Bank records. Transfer receipts. Emails between Mom and Daniel and the man. Everything. I just... I don't want to go to prison. Please."

I stared at her.

I didn't trust her.

Not for a second.

But if what she was saying was true...

She could give me the evidence I needed.

The evidence to take down Evelyn and Daniel once and for all.

"What kind of proof?" I asked.

Rebecca reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a USB drive.

"Everything is on here," she said. "All the records. All the emails. All the transfers. I made copies. Just in case. Just in case Mom ever tried to throw me under the bus."

She held it out to me.

I hesitated.

Then I took it.

It felt heavy in my hand.

Like the weight of the entire family.

"Why should I trust you?" I asked again.

Rebecca looked at me.

"Because we're both trapped in this family," she said. "Both of us. You married into it. I was born into it. And we both want out. Don't we?"

I thought about it.

She was right.

In a way.

We were both trapped.

Just in different ways.

"Okay," I said. "I'll take it. But if this is a trick... if you're lying to me..."

"I'm not," Rebecca said quickly. "I swear. Everything on that drive is real. You can check it. You can have it verified. It's all there."

I nodded.

"Okay," I said.

Rebecca looked relieved.

"Thank you," she said.

She turned to leave.

Then she stopped.

She looked back at me.

"Be careful," she said. "Mom knows you have the recording. She knows you're going to fight. She's not going to go down without a fight. And Daniel... he'll do whatever she says. They're dangerous. Both of them."

She left the room.

I sat there for a long time.

Holding the USB drive.

Thinking about everything.

Daniel.

Helping his mother steal.

For years.

I felt so stupid.

So blind.

How had I not seen it?

How had I not known?

I stood up.

I finished packing my bag.

I put the USB drive in my pocket.

I picked up my suitcase.

I walked out of the bedroom.

I walked down the stairs.

Evelyn and Daniel were still in the living room.

They were talking quietly.

Furiously.

They stopped when they saw me.

"Where do you think you're going?" Evelyn asked.

"Out," I said.

"You're not leaving this house with anything that belongs to this family," Daniel said.

I looked at him.

"I'm taking only what's mine," I said. "And you can't stop me. Unless you want me to call the police right now. And tell them everything. Including what I just learned about your little accounting practices."

Daniel's face went white.

He looked at his mother.

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"What did she tell you?" she asked.

"Everything," I said.

I walked toward the door.

"Don't you dare walk out that door," Evelyn said. "If you do, you'll regret it. I'll make sure you never work again. I'll make sure everyone in this town knows what kind of person you are. I'll destroy you."

I stopped.

I turned around.

I looked at her.

"Go ahead," I said. "Try. Because I'm going to destroy you first. And when I'm done, you'll have nothing. No money. No family. No freedom. Just you and your prison cell. Enjoy it."

I opened the door.

I walked out.

I didn't look back.

I got in my car.

I put my suitcase in the back.

I started the engine.

I drove away.

I didn't know where I was going.

But I knew I couldn't go back.

Not ever.

I drove to a small hotel on the edge of town.

I checked in under a fake name.

I paid cash.

I didn't want anyone to find me.

Not yet.

I went to my room.

I put my suitcase on the bed.

I pulled out my laptop.

I plugged in the USB drive.

And I started reading.

Bank records.

Transfer receipts.

Emails.

Spreadsheets.

Everything.

Rebecca had been telling the truth.

All of it.

Evelyn had been stealing from the family business for eight years.

Almost two and a half million dollars.

And Daniel had been helping her.

Falsifying records.

Making transfers.

Covering it up.

And there was more.

Emails between Evelyn and her lover.

A man named Richard.

They'd been together for six years.

They'd been planning to run away together.

To take the money.

To start a new life.

And Daniel had known.

All of it.

He'd known about the affair.

He'd known about the theft.

He'd known everything.

And he'd helped them.

Because Evelyn had promised him something.

In one email, she'd written to Daniel:

"Once your father is gone, the business will be yours. I'll make sure of it. You just have to keep helping me. And keep that pathetic wife of yours under control. She's starting to ask questions."

I stared at the screen.

I felt sick.

My marriage.

My life.

Everything had been a lie.

Daniel had never loved me.

He'd just been using me.

As a cover.

As a distraction.

As someone to blame when things went wrong.

I closed my laptop.

I lay back on the bed.

I stared at the ceiling.

And I cried.

For the first time that day.

I cried for the woman I'd been.

For the life I'd thought I had.

For the husband I'd loved.

For everything I'd lost.

And then I stopped crying.

I wiped my eyes.

I sat up.

I looked at the laptop.

I looked at the USB drive.

I thought about Evelyn's face.

I thought about Daniel's betrayal.

I thought about the grandfather's words.

"You fought back. That takes strength. Real strength."

I had strength.

I had evidence.

And I had nothing left to lose.

I picked up my phone.

I called the number the grandfather had given me.

His lawyer answered on the first ring.

"Hello?"

"This is Daniel's wife," I said. "I need to talk to you. I have evidence. And I want to take them down."

The lawyer was quiet for a moment.

"Good," he said. "Where are you? I'll come to you."

I told him the name of the hotel.

"I'll be there in an hour," he said.

He hung up.

I put my phone down.

I took a deep breath.

This was it.

The fight of my life.

And I was going to win.

No matter what.

An hour later, there was a knock on my door.

I opened it.

The lawyer was standing there.

He was tall.

Sharp.

Professional.

And next to him...

Harold.

He looked pale.

Tired.

But his eyes were sharp.

"Can we come in?" he asked.

I stepped aside.

They walked in.

Harold sat down on the chair.

The lawyer sat next to him.

They both looked at me.

"Tell us everything," Harold said.

And I did.

I told them about Rebecca.

About the USB drive.

About Daniel's involvement.

About everything.

When I was done, Harold looked at the lawyer.

The lawyer nodded.

"This is more than enough," he said. "We can freeze the accounts. We can file charges. We can take back control of the business. We can destroy them."

Harold looked at me.

"Are you sure about this?" he asked. "Once we start, there's no going back. Your life will change forever. Daniel will be arrested. Evelyn will be arrested. The family will be torn apart. The business will suffer. Are you prepared for that?"

I thought about it.

I thought about everything I'd been through.

Everything I'd lost.

Everything I'd gained.

I looked at Harold.

"I'm sure," I said.

Harold nodded.

"Good," he said. "Then let's get started."

The lawyer pulled out his phone.

He started making calls.

Harold looked at me.

"Thank you," he said. "For being brave enough to do this. For my father. For the business. For the family."

I nodded.

But I wasn't doing it for the family.

I was doing it for me.

For justice.

For the truth.

And for the chance to start over.

To be free.

The lawyer hung up his phone.

He looked at us.

"The accounts are frozen," he said. "The police have been notified. They're going to the house now. To arrest Evelyn and Daniel. It's over."

I stared at him.

It was over.

Just like that.

But I knew it wasn't really over.

Not yet.

The trial.

The media.

The aftermath.

It would be long.

It would be painful.

But it would be worth it.

I stood up.

I walked to the window.

I looked out at the night sky.

And for the first time in a long time.

I felt hope.

And then my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

It was an unknown number.

I answered it.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice.

Cold.

Familiar.

"You think you've won?" Evelyn said. "You think you can destroy me? You have no idea who you're dealing with. I have friends. Powerful friends. And I'm going to make you pay. For everything. Starting with that little USB drive Rebecca gave you. Did you really think she was on your side? She's my daughter. She'll always be on my side. And she's been recording everything you've said tonight. Everything. You're going to regret the day you ever crossed me."

She hung up.

I stared at my phone.

My blood ran cold.

Rebecca.

She'd been working with Evelyn all along.

The USB drive.

The confession.

May you like

Everything.

It had been a trap.
