Chapter 1

Evelyn's fingers tangled in my hair from behind.
She yanked hard, and I screamed.
I'd been mid-wash at the kitchen sink, soapy water dripping from my hands as she dragged me across the cold tile floor.
My knees scraped raw.
I cried out in pain, but she didn't stop.
She pulled me into the living room.
The entire family was gathered there.
Daniel, my husband.
His brother James. His sister Rebecca. His aunts and uncles. His grandfather.
They all turned to stare.
No one moved.
No one said a word.
They just watched.
Evelyn stopped in the center of the room.
She shoved me hard.
I fell to my hands and knees.
Her fist was still tangled in my hair.
"Look at her!" she screamed, yanking my head back so I was forced to look up at every judgmental face.
"This is the woman my son married! A lazy, good-for-nothing thief!"
I tried to speak, my voice trembling.
"I didn't steal anything—"
"Shut up!"
She slapped me hard across the face.
The sound cracked through the silent room.
My cheek burned.
I tasted blood.
I looked at Daniel.
He stood by the fireplace, his arms crossed over his chest.
His face was impassive.
Cold.
He didn't come to me.
He didn't defend me.
He just watched.
"She stole five hundred dollars from my purse this morning!" Evelyn shouted, holding up an empty wallet for everyone to see.
"I saw her with my own eyes! Sneaking into my room like the little rat she is!"
I stared at her in disbelief.
I'd been in the kitchen all morning.
Washing dishes. Preparing lunch for the family gathering.
I hadn't gone anywhere near her room.
But I knew exactly why she was doing this.
Yesterday.
I'd walked in on something I shouldn't have.
Something that could destroy her.
Something that could destroy this entire family.
And this was her way of silencing me first.
Discredit me before I could speak.
"Admit it!" Evelyn screamed, yanking my hair harder. Tears stung my eyes, but I refused to let them fall.
I would not cry in front of these people.
I looked at each face in the room.
Judgment. Contempt. Disgust.
No one believed me.
No one would believe me.
Not unless I made them.
I took a deep breath.
And then I did the last thing any of them expected.
I laughed.
A cold, bitter sound that cut through the tension.
Evelyn paused.
Her grip on my hair loosened just a fraction.
"You think this is funny?" she snarled.
I looked up at her.
My eyes were dry now.
My voice was steady.
"You just made the biggest mistake of your life."
She narrowed her eyes.
"What did you say?"
I slowly stood up.
I ignored the pain in my raw knees.
I ignored the burning in my scalp.
I wiped the blood from my lip with the back of my hand.
"You wanted to humiliate me in front of everyone?" I said, my voice carrying across the quiet room.
"You wanted to make me look like a liar and a thief?"
I turned to Daniel.
"And you... you just stood there and let her do it."
Daniel shifted uncomfortably.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
I turned back to Evelyn.
"You think you've won?" I said, a small, cold smile forming on my face.
"You think this ends with me broken and defeated?"
I reached into my pocket.
And I held up my phone.
Evelyn's eyes went wide.
All the color drained from her face.
She released my hair.
She stumbled backward as if she'd been burned.
"What... what do you have on there?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
I didn't answer.
I just pressed play.
And a man's voice filled the room.
Not her husband's voice.
Another man's.
"Evelyn, you have to be careful. If Harold finds out about us—"
The room erupted in gasps.
Uncle Richard dropped his glass.
Aunt Martha covered her mouth.
The grandfather leaned forward in his chair, his eyes sharp.
Evelyn let out a sound somewhere between a sob and a scream.
"Turn it off!" she shrieked. "Turn it off right now!"
She lunged for me, her nails out like claws.
I stood my ground.
But before she could reach me, someone else moved.
It wasn't Daniel.
It was his father.
Harold.
He stood up from his chair.
Slowly.
May you like
Deliberately.
And the look on his face made even Evelyn freeze in her tracks.
