Chapter 5

The next morning, I called the insurance company.
I told them everything. Asked them to freeze all accounts. To flag any suspicious activity. To not release any funds without my direct, in-person authorization.
They were alarmed. Helpful.
And they told me something that made my blood run cold.
"Mrs. Carter," the representative said. "We received a call yesterday. From a man identifying himself as your husband. He was asking about the payout schedule. He said you were... unavailable."
My hands shook.
"Did he give a name?"
"Ethan Carter," she said. "He said he was handling your affairs."
I closed my eyes.
He'd already been trying to access my money.
Before I'd even refused to move in.
The slap hadn't been about the move-in date.
It had been about control.
About making me submit.
And when I hadn't... he'd panicked.
That was why he'd had the folder with him.

He was already planning to take what he could.
Whether I agreed or not.
