Chapter 4

The police came to the house.
I told them everything. Showed them the dent in my car. Let them photograph my face. Told them about the folder. About the application.
They took my statement. Promised to investigate.
But I could see it in their eyes.
Without the folder itself, without proof he'd taken it... it was my word against his.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
I lay in the guest room, Lily curled up beside me, and thought about everything.
The way Ethan had found me. At a grief support group. So convenient.
The way he'd asked about Mark's job. About the accident. About insurance.
The way he'd pushed for me to move in. To combine finances. To "trust him with everything."
It had all been planned.
Every word. Every touch. Every promise.
I was just a target.
Lily was just leverage.
And if I hadn't refused to move in... if I hadn't seen that folder...
He would have taken everything.
And then what?
A cold chill ran through me.

I thought about the policy. About the accidental death clause. About how much money was at stake.
Had he planned more than just theft?
