Chapter 5: The Last Message From Evelyn Vale

The lobby disappeared.

At least, that was how it felt to Charlotte.

The guests.

The executives.

The cameras.

Richard Ashford’s angry expression.

All of it faded into the background as her mother’s face filled the enormous screen above the reception desk.

Evelyn Vale looked exactly as Charlotte remembered.

Her calm eyes.

Her gentle smile.

The small silver necklace she always wore.

For a moment, Charlotte forgot that she was standing inside a hotel surrounded by people who had tried to destroy her.

She was just a daughter seeing her mother again.

“Charlotte,” Evelyn’s recorded voice continued.

“If you are watching this, it means the person who betrayed me is standing very close to you.””

Charlotte felt her chest tighten.

The entire lobby became silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone understood the weight of those words.

Someone in that room was the reason Evelyn Vale was gone.

The video continued.

“I wish I could tell you this message was unnecessary.””

Evelyn looked down briefly, as if gathering her thoughts.

“I wish I could tell you that the people around you are exactly who they appear to be.””

Charlotte’s fingers tightened around the edge of the envelope.

Her mother’s voice remained steady.

“But if you have found this recording, then I already know one thing.””

A pause.

“You survived.””

Charlotte closed her eyes.

A tear almost escaped.

Almost.

She refused to let it.

Not here.

Not in front of the people who had watched her fall.

Evelyn continued.

“And that means I was right to trust you.””

Charlotte looked at the screen.

Her mother smiled faintly.

“You always believed you were not ready. You always thought you needed more experience, more knowledge, more time.””

A quiet breath left Charlotte.

Because her mother knew her too well.

“But the truth is, Charlotte, you were never unprepared.””

The recording paused for a second.

“You were simply surrounded by people who wanted you to believe you were powerless.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Because that was exactly what they had done.

They had removed her name.

Her position.

Her access.

They had convinced the world that she was nobody.

Evelyn leaned closer to the camera.

“There is one thing you need to understand.””

Her expression became serious.

“Solmere was never just a company.””

Charlotte listened carefully.

“It was built on trust. On promises. On people believing that their word meant something.””

The screen flickered slightly.

“And the person who betrayed me did not do it because of money.””

A murmur moved through the crowd.

Charlotte looked toward Richard.

His face was unreadable.

“He did it because he believed he deserved everything.””

The word hung in the air.

He.

Not they.

Not someone.

He.

Charlotte’s eyes narrowed.

Richard noticed.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Nobody responded.

The video continued.

“The person responsible has spent years convincing everyone that he was protecting Solmere.””

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“But he was protecting himself.””

Charlotte felt her heartbeat increase.

Her mother knew.

She had known.

The entire time.

Then Evelyn said something that made Charlotte freeze.

“However, Richard Ashford is not the only person you need to be careful of.””

The lobby went silent.

Richard looked surprised.

For the first time tonight, he seemed genuinely confused.

Charlotte turned toward him.

Even he didn’t know what was coming next.

Evelyn continued.

“The person who helped him is someone closer than you think.””

The video paused.

Charlotte stared.

Closer?

Someone closer than Richard?

Her mind raced.

Family.

Employees.

Friends.

People her mother trusted.

The screen flickered again.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Charlotte, before you confront anyone, you need to find the original Solmere ledger.””

Margaret immediately looked up.

The reaction was instant.

Charlotte noticed.

“What ledger?””

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

Richard noticed too.

“You never told her.””

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Not here.””

Charlotte turned.

“Not here?””

Her voice was sharper.

“I think everyone has waited long enough for me to find out the truth.””

The room stayed quiet.

Margaret sighed.

“The original ledger contains every major transaction made by Solmere since your grandfather founded the company.””

Charlotte frowned.

“And?””

“And unlike digital records, it cannot be altered.””

She looked at Richard.

“That ledger contains signatures.””

Richard’s face changed.

Charlotte saw it.

A brief flash of fear.

“What signatures?””

Margaret answered.

“The people who approved the transfer of company assets before your mother died.””

Charlotte looked back at the screen.

Her mother’s recording continued.

“The ledger is the only evidence that can prove who helped steal Solmere.””

Evelyn paused.

“But there is something you should know.””

The room held its breath.

“The ledger is not hidden somewhere outside the company.””

Charlotte waited.

“It is inside Solmere.””

A wave of confusion moved through the executives.

Inside the hotel?

Evelyn continued.

“I placed it somewhere only someone who truly understood this company would find.””

The video ended.

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Richard laughed.

A quiet, nervous laugh.

“That’s all?””

Charlotte looked at him.

“What?””

“That message proves nothing.””

He stepped forward.

“Your mother suspected people. She was worried. She made a recording. That doesn’t prove I did anything.””

Charlotte studied him.

“You’re right.””

Richard paused.

She continued.

“But your reaction does.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“You knew about the ledger.””

Silence.

Charlotte turned toward Margaret.

“And you knew too.””

Margaret didn’t deny it.

“I knew it existed.””

“But not where it was?””

“No.””

Richard looked away.

Charlotte noticed.

He was hiding something.

Everyone was.

And now she understood why.

The truth wasn’t one secret.

It was a chain.

Every person in Solmere had been holding one piece.

And Charlotte had just started pulling.

Suddenly, a loud crash came from the upper floors.

Everyone turned.

A security alarm began ringing.

The hotel lights flickered.

“What’s happening?”” someone shouted.

A security officer rushed down the staircase.

His face was pale.

“Miss Vale!””

Charlotte turned.

“What happened?””

The officer looked around nervously.

“Someone accessed the private archives.””

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“What?””

“The restricted floor.””

Charlotte’s eyes narrowed.

“What’s on that floor?””

Nobody answered.

The officer looked at Richard.

Then at Charlotte.

“The old executive records.””

Margaret’s face changed.

“Oh no.””

Charlotte noticed.

“What?””

Margaret lowered her voice.

“The ledger.””

A cold feeling moved through Charlotte.

“You said nobody knew where it was.””

Margaret looked toward the stairs.

“Someone did.””

Richard suddenly moved toward the exit.

Charlotte noticed.

“Where are you going?””

He stopped.

“I need to handle this.””

Charlotte stepped in front of him.

“No.””

His eyes hardened.

“Move.””

“No.””

For the first time, Charlotte stood between Richard Ashford and something he wanted.

And he realized something.

She was no longer the girl he thought he could erase.

She was the person who could destroy him.

The security officer spoke again.

“There’s more.””

Charlotte looked at him.

“What?””

The officer swallowed.

“The person who entered the archives left something behind.””

“What?””

He handed her a small envelope.

Charlotte recognized it immediately.

Another black envelope.

Another message.

Her name was written across the front.

Not Charlotte Vale.

Not Miss Vale.

A name only one person had ever called her.

The name her mother used when she was a child.

Charlotte opened it slowly.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her mother.

Richard.

Margaret.

And one other person.

A person standing beside them years ago.

A person Charlotte knew.

A person who had been helping her uncover the truth from the beginning.

Her hands began to shake.

May you like

Because written on the back of the photograph were six words:

*“Ask your best friend why she lied.””*
