Chapter 4: The Secret Witness
The name on the storage device made Charlotte’s fingers go cold.
Not because she recognized it immediately.
Because she did.
And that was worse.
For a few seconds, she simply stared at the small label attached to the black device.
A name written in permanent ink.
A name she had never expected to see connected to her mother’s death.
*Margaret Hale.*
The attorney standing beside her.
The woman who had just helped restore her inheritance.
The woman who had walked into the hotel and exposed Richard Ashford’s crimes.
Charlotte slowly lifted her eyes.
Everyone in the lobby was watching her.
But she only looked at Margaret.
The older woman’s expression changed.
Not with surprise.
Not with fear.
With sadness.
And that told Charlotte everything.
“You knew,” Charlotte whispered.
Margaret didn’t answer.
The silence was louder than any confession.
Richard Ashford immediately noticed the tension.
A small smile appeared on his face.
Not a happy smile.
A desperate one.
“There it is,” he said.
Charlotte looked at him.
“What?””
“The truth.””
He stepped closer.
“You were so certain I was the villain.””
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“Richard.””
But he ignored her.
“You came in here believing you understood everything.””
His gaze moved to Charlotte.
“You thought you were the only person who lost something.””
Charlotte tightened her grip on the device.
“Don’t.””
Richard’s smile disappeared.
“Ask her.””
The lobby became still.
Charlotte looked at Margaret.
The attorney who had protected her family for decades.
The woman her mother trusted.
The woman who apparently had hidden the most important evidence of Evelyn Vale’s death.
“Is he telling the truth?””
Margaret looked down.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she quietly replied.
“Yes.””
The answer hit harder than Charlotte expected.
A wave of whispers spread through the lobby.
Vivienne looked shocked.
“You hid the footage?””
Margaret turned toward her.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question came from Charlotte.
Not angry.
Not loud.
Just broken.
Margaret took a slow breath.
“Because your mother asked me to.””
Nobody spoke.
Charlotte stared.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“Evelyn knew someone was watching her. She knew someone inside Solmere was trying to gain control of the company.””
Charlotte shook her head.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she told me not to.””
The answer made Charlotte angry.
“Why would she do that?””
Margaret’s eyes softened.
“Because she knew you.””
Charlotte looked away.
“She knew I would come looking.””
“Yes.””
“She knew I wouldn’t stop.””
“Yes.””
Margaret’s voice became quieter.
“And she knew if you knew everything too soon, you would walk directly into a trap.””
Charlotte looked back at her.
“What trap?””
Nobody answered.
That frightened her more than anything.
Richard suddenly laughed.
A bitter sound.
“Still protecting her.””
Margaret turned toward him.
“I’m protecting the truth.””
“No.””
Richard’s voice hardened.
“You’re protecting your own guilt.””
Charlotte looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Richard folded his arms.
“Ask her why she disappeared after your mother died.””
Margaret’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Charlotte saw it.
A hidden wound.
Something much older than tonight.
“Margaret?””
The attorney closed her eyes briefly.
Then she spoke.
“Because I failed her.””
The confession silenced the room.
Charlotte waited.
Margaret looked toward the towering crystal lights above them.
“I was Evelyn’s attorney before I was yours.””
Her voice carried through the lobby.
“She called me the night before the accident.””
Charlotte’s heart tightened.
“She told me she had discovered something inside Solmere. Something involving people she trusted.””
“Who?””
Margaret looked at Richard.
“Your father figure.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“She was paranoid.””
Margaret ignored him.
“She believed someone was preparing to remove Charlotte from the company permanently.””
Charlotte swallowed.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
Margaret nodded.
“She asked me to create a backup plan.””
“A backup plan?””
“The ownership transfer.””
Charlotte looked at the document in her hand.
“The one you brought tonight.””
“Yes.””
Margaret continued.
“But she also asked me to protect one other thing.””
She pointed toward the device.
“The security footage.””
Charlotte stared.
“Why hide it?””
“Because the footage showed someone entering your mother’s car before the accident.””
A chill moved through the room.
Everyone became silent.
Charlotte whispered.
“Who?””
Margaret looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
The answer surprised her.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Margaret shook her head.
“The footage was incomplete. The person’s face was never visible.””
“Then why keep it?””
“Because of what happened afterward.””
Charlotte waited.
Margaret looked at the device.
“Someone tried to destroy the evidence.””
Richard spoke immediately.
“Because it was irrelevant.””
Margaret turned sharply.
“No.””
Her voice cut through the lobby.
“Because it was dangerous.””
The room went quiet.
Charlotte looked at Richard.
For the first time, she saw something different.
Not just fear.
Recognition.
He knew more than he was saying.
“Richard.””
Everyone turned.
The voice came from Charlotte.
“What did you see that night?””
Richard stared at her.
“I wasn’t there.””
“You were.””
The accusation landed.
Richard’s face hardened.
“You have no proof.””
Charlotte held up the device.
“Maybe I do now.””
She walked toward the center of the lobby.
The same place where she had been thrown to the floor.
The same place where everyone had decided she was worthless.
Now everyone was waiting for her.
“Play it.””
A technician from the hotel security department hesitated.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Charlotte looked at him.
“No?””
His eyes became cold.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Charlotte’s expression didn’t change.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
The technician connected the device.
The massive screen behind the reception desk turned on.
The lobby lights dimmed.
The security footage began.
A grainy black-and-white image appeared.
A parking garage.
Six months earlier.
The night Evelyn Vale died.
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Even though she had seen pictures.
Even though she had attended the funeral.
Seeing the location made it real.
Her mother’s car appeared on screen.
A few seconds later, a person entered the frame.
Tall.
Wearing a dark coat.
Face hidden.
The figure approached the vehicle.
Charlotte stepped closer.
The entire lobby watched.
The person opened the driver’s side door.
Then something happened.
The footage glitched.
The screen went black.
A collective gasp moved through the crowd.
“Is that all?”” someone whispered.
The technician checked the file.
“No. There’s more.””
The screen returned.
But the angle had changed.
A second camera.
This one showed the hallway near the garage entrance.
The person walked away.
Still hidden.
Still impossible to identify.
Then the figure stopped.
Slowly turned.
And looked directly into the camera.
Charlotte felt her stomach drop.
Because even though the face was blurred...
She recognized something.
The person wasn’t alone.
Someone else was standing behind them.
Someone who had been waiting.
The technician paused the video.
Charlotte stared.
“Zoom in.””
The image became larger.
Pixel by pixel.
The second person remained mostly hidden.
But one detail became clear.
A ring.
A family ring.
A ring Charlotte had seen hundreds of times growing up.
Her mother used to say it represented loyalty.
Trust.
A promise between two families.
Charlotte stepped backward.
“No.””
Margaret looked at her.
“What is it?””
Charlotte couldn’t answer.
Because the ring belonged to someone she had never suspected.
Someone who had been beside her family for years.
Someone everyone trusted.
The screen flickered.
Then a new file automatically opened.
The title appeared.
Everyone saw it.
*EVELYN VALE’S FINAL MESSAGE.*
Richard’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
Charlotte turned.
“You knew about this?””
Richard didn’t respond.
The video began loading.
Then her mother’s face appeared on the screen.
Alive.
Looking directly into the camera.
Charlotte covered her mouth.
Because after months of searching for answers...
Her mother was about to speak.
May you like
And the first words Evelyn Vale said were:
“Charlotte, if you are watching this, it means the person who betrayed me is standing very close to you.””
