Chapter 6

Eleanor was hospitalized with a concussion.

The police investigated. But there was no proof. No license plate. No witnesses.

"He tried to kill us," I told the detective. "It was my uncle. I know it was."

He promised to look into it. But I saw the doubt in his eyes.

I sat beside Eleanor’s bed that night, holding her hand.

She’d risked everything to find me. And now she was hurt because of it.

Anger burned in my chest. Clear and hot.

I looked at the star on my wrist.

I wouldn’t let him win. Not after everything.

I went back to the house. To Eleanor’s study. To the files he’d managed for twenty years.

If he’d hidden one crime... he might have hidden others.

I worked through the night. Reading. Comparing. Searching.

And by dawn, I found it.

A hidden account. Payments made over twenty years. To the very woman who had taken me.

And then another name.

A partner. Someone who had helped him. Someone he had worked with the entire time.

I pulled out my phone and called the detective.

"I have proof," I said. "Everything."
