Chapter 1

The waitress set down the wealthy woman’s lunch and her sleeve slipped back—revealing a birthmark that made the guest tremble.
I’d started working at the hotel restaurant in Dallas just two weeks ago.
It was elegant, quiet, full of people who looked like they had never known hardship.
That afternoon I was assigned to serve a wealthy older woman who sat alone by the window.
She wore pearls and silk, carried a handbag worth more than everything I owned.
I walked over carefully, balancing her silver tray.
As I leaned forward to set her plate down, my sleeve slid up my arm.
Right there, clearly visible on my wrist, was my birthmark.
Three small marks arranged in the shape of a star.
The woman stopped breathing.
Her fork froze halfway to her mouth.
She stared at my wrist like she had seen a ghost.
Her face turned pale, then flooded with color.
"Excuse me, my dear," she said, her voice trembling. "May I... may I look at your hand more closely?"
I hesitated, then held my hand out to her.
She leaned forward, tears already glistening in her eyes.
She traced the shape of the marks gently with her finger.
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out an old, worn bracelet.
It was simple silver, shaped with the exact same star pattern.
Her hands shook as she held it up beside my wrist.
"I have one too," I whispered.
I pulled my own thin chain from inside my uniform.
Hanging there was an identical star-shaped charm.
The woman gasped.
She covered her mouth with both hands and began to weep openly.
Tears streamed down her face.
May you like
She reached out and held my face between her trembling palms.
"After all these years," she sobbed, barely able to speak. "I finally found you... my long-lost daughter."
