Chapter 17

College changed me.
Not all at once.
Slowly.
I called Dad every Sunday.
Sometimes more.
He sent me photos of things he repaired.
A porch.
A truck engine.
A neighbor’s fence.
I sent him photos of campus.
My dorm.
My first bad cafeteria meal.
My first A.
Mom called too.
Less often.
More carefully.
Our conversations were awkward.
But no longer built entirely on lies.
Richard was sued by Dad’s attorney.
The case settled.
Quietly, but not invisibly.
Richard had to repay a portion of the debt with interest and issue a written statement acknowledging Dad had not misused company funds.
Dad framed the statement.
Not in the living room.
In his closet.
I found it once.

He said, “I don’t need to see it every day. Just know it exists.”
I understood.
