Chapter 7: The Truth My Father Took To His Grave

The call ended.

But Frank's final words stayed.

*It was someone your father trusted more than anyone.*

The crowd around me blurred.

The lights.

The cars.

The people holding phones.

None of it mattered.

Because my entire life had just shifted underneath my feet.

I had spent years believing my father died because of someone else.

A rival.

An enemy.

A person who wanted him gone.

But now the truth was worse.

The person responsible wasn't a stranger.

It was someone who stood close enough to earn his trust.

Someone who knew his habits.

His cars.

His secrets.

Someone who knew exactly where to hurt him.

I looked at Richard King.

Then at Tyler.

Then at the Challenger.

The car that had brought me here.

The car that held the answers.

“Where is Frank?”” I asked.

Nobody responded.

The mysterious man who had brought the envelope smiled slightly.

“Still worried about him?””

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

He didn't deny it.

“You knew this would happen.””

“Of course.””

My hands tightened.

“Who are you?””

The man looked around at the crowd.

Then at Richard.

“Ask him.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“Leave.””

The man laughed.

“You still think you can give orders?””

That was when I noticed something.

Richard King wasn't angry.

He was scared.

Not of me.

Not of the crowd.

Of this man.

“You work for him,” I said.

Richard didn't answer.

The man's smile widened.

“Smart girl.””

Tyler looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Nobody answered him.

For the first time, Tyler looked like a kid who had walked into a room where adults were discussing something he couldn't understand.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then I remembered my Camaro.

The bats.

His smile.

The way he enjoyed hurting something that mattered to me.

Sympathy disappeared.

I stepped toward Richard.

“You knew about the car.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father was investigating.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he didn't crash.””

Richard looked away.

“Yes.””

The crowd reacted.

Phones lifted higher.

Everyone heard him.

Everyone recorded him.

Richard realized it too late.

His mistake wasn't admitting it.

His mistake was admitting it in front of witnesses.

“Then tell me.””

My voice shook.

“Tell me what happened.””

Richard stared at the ground.

For a moment, he looked like a man who had been carrying guilt for years.

Then the stranger spoke.

“Richard won't tell you.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Richard King has spent twenty-five years convincing himself he was protecting his family.””

The man stepped closer.

“But the truth is, he was protecting himself.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Enough.””

“No.””

The man's voice became colder.

“It's time.””

I looked between them.

“Time for what?””

The man pointed at the Challenger.

“Time for you to know what your father discovered.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, it wasn't unknown.

It was from Frank.

A video.

My finger hovered over it.

Everyone watched.

I pressed play.

The screen showed an old recording.

The quality was poor.

The camera shook.

But I recognized the voice immediately.

My father.

My knees almost gave out.

“Kid…”

His voice.

After all this time.

I hadn't heard it in a year.

Not a recording.

Not a memory.

Him.

My father.

The video showed him sitting inside the Challenger's garage.

The same garage I stood in every day.

The same walls.

The same tools.

Except he was alive.

“I'm recording this because if you're watching it, something happened.””

My breathing stopped.

He continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

He looked directly into the camera.

“I didn't build this car to win races.””

A pause.

“I built it to expose a lie.””

The video shook slightly.

My father's face became serious.

“Richard King didn't ruin my life.””

Everyone went quiet.

“Not completely.””

I looked at Richard.

His eyes closed.

Like he already knew what was coming.

My father continued.

“Richard made mistakes. He was weak. He made choices he regrets.””

A long pause.

“But he didn't change my car.””

My heart stopped.

The stranger smiled.

I felt confused.

Angry.

Lost.

If Richard didn't sabotage the car...

Then who did?

My father's voice continued.

“The person who changed my engine settings was someone I trusted completely.””

The video froze for a second.

Then the camera moved.

My father reached for something off-screen.

A folder.

He opened it.

Inside were papers.

Photos.

Records.

Then he said the name.

“Frank Delaney.””

The world went silent.

I stopped breathing.

No.

No.

Not Frank.

My father continued.

“I know what you're thinking.””

His voice softened.

“You trusted him. I trusted him.””

The words cut deeper.

“But Frank didn't understand what he was doing.””

I stared at the screen.

The stranger's expression changed slightly.

My father wasn't angry.

He sounded sad.

“Frank thought he was helping me.””

The video continued.

“He was manipulated.””

Richard looked at the ground.

Tyler stared at his father.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

Frank's guilt.

His fear.

His warning.

His confession.

He hadn't killed my father.

But he had been part of the reason he died.

My father's voice continued.

“That's why I hid the Challenger.””

The camera moved toward the car.

“I knew someone would come looking.””

He looked back.

“I knew the truth would be dangerous.””

Then he said something that made my entire body freeze.

“The person controlling everything isn't Richard.””

The crowd went silent.

My father looked directly into the camera.

“It's someone above him.””

The video ended.

No explanation.

No name.

Just darkness.

I looked up.

The stranger was smiling.

“You see?””

I hated that smile.

“What do you want?””

He shrugged.

“What everyone wants.””

“Which is?””

“The truth.””

I laughed.

“You don't care about the truth.””

His smile disappeared.

“Careful.””

“People who care about the truth don't hide behind threats.””

The crowd murmured.

The man studied me.

Then he looked at the Challenger.

“You're exactly like your father.””

I hated hearing that.

But this time, it didn't feel like an insult.

It felt like a warning.

“What happens now?””

The man looked toward the city.

“Now everyone who buried your father starts digging.””

A loud sound interrupted him.

Police sirens.

Everyone turned.

Several police vehicles approached.

The crowd started moving.

The stranger stepped backward.

“You should go.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because the people coming aren't here to protect you.””

Richard immediately looked alarmed.

“What did you do?””

The man smiled.

“Nothing.””

Then he looked at me.

“Yet.””

The police stopped near the road.

Officers stepped out.

One of them walked directly toward me.

“Are you the owner of the Carter garage?””

“Yes.””

“You need to come with us.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

The officer hesitated.

Then handed me a paper.

A search warrant.

For my garage.

My blood went cold.

“What?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“There's been a report of stolen property.””

I stared at him.

“Stolen?””

The officer nodded.

“Your father's Challenger.””

I almost laughed.

“You can't be serious.””

The officer looked at the paperwork.

“According to this, the vehicle belongs to King Motorworks.””

Everyone went silent.

I looked at Richard.

He looked shocked.

Not fake shocked.

Real shocked.

“That's impossible.””

The officer frowned.

“Mr. King?””

Richard stepped forward.

“I never filed that claim.””

The officer looked confused.

“Then someone did using your name.””

The stranger slowly backed away into the crowd.

Before disappearing, he looked at me one last time.

And whispered:

“Now you know why your father hid the car.””

I looked down at the papers.

The Challenger.

The garage.

My father's legacy.

Someone was trying to take everything from me.

Again.

But this time, I wasn't just fighting for a car.

I was fighting for the truth.

Then my phone buzzed one final time.

A message from an unknown number.

May you like

A single sentence.

*Your father left you the car. He left someone else the proof. Find the missing piece before they find you.*
