Chapter 7: The Night Before the Wedding
The drive to Virginia and Walter’s house felt longer than it actually was.
It was only twenty minutes.
But every red light felt like an hour.
Justin drove with both hands gripping the steering wheel.
He didn’t play music.
He didn’t talk.
He just stared ahead.
I sat beside him, watching the tension in his jaw.
I had seen Justin angry before.
I had seen him frustrated.
But this was different.
This was someone trying to hold together a version of his past that was falling apart piece by piece.
Finally, I reached over and placed my hand on the center console.
Not on him.
Just close enough for him to know I was there.
“You don’t have to do this alone.””
His eyes stayed on the road.
“I spent years believing I understood what happened.””
“I know.””
“And now I don’t know what parts were real.””
I looked out the window.
“That’s a painful thing to realize.””
He nodded.
“I keep thinking about all the things I said about Rachel.””
“What things?””
“That she left because she wasn’t ready. That she got scared. That she didn’t really love me.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“And what if I was wrong?””
I turned toward him.
“Justin.””
He looked at me.
“Someone can hurt you and still have loved you.””
He was quiet.
“And someone can love you and still make the wrong choice.””
He looked back at the road.
“That’s what I’m trying to understand.””
When we arrived, Virginia’s car was parked outside.
So was another car.
A silver sedan I didn’t recognize.
Rachel’s.
Justin noticed it too.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then he turned off the engine.
“I never thought I would see that car again.””
I didn’t know what to say.
So I just followed him to the door.
Walter opened it before we knocked.
He looked tired.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
“Come in.””
His eyes moved between us.
“This is bigger than I thought.””
Justin stepped inside.
“Where is she?””
Walter glanced toward the living room.
“Your mother is there.””
“And Rachel?””
“She’s in the kitchen.””
Justin froze.
Then he walked forward.
I followed.
Not because I wanted to be involved in something private.
Because this involved my marriage too.
In the kitchen, Rachel stood near the counter.
She looked older than the photos I had seen.
Not old.
Just different.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face had more confidence.
But when she saw Justin, I noticed something familiar.
Regret.
Not love.
Not longing.
Regret.
“Hi, Justin.””
His expression remained guarded.
“Why are you here?””
Rachel looked at Virginia.
Then back at him.
“Because I think you deserve the truth.””
Virginia immediately interrupted.
“I told her she didn’t need to come.””
Rachel looked at her.
“No, you told me I needed to explain myself.””
Justin’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel took a breath.
“It means your mother contacted me again.””
His face changed.
“Again?””
She nodded.
“Three days ago.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Virginia.
She looked away.
Justin noticed.
“You called her while she was staying with us?””
Virginia said nothing.
“Mom.””
“I was trying to understand.””
Rachel shook her head.
“You were trying to convince me.””
Justin turned toward Rachel.
“Convince you of what?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“That you were unhappy.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Justin stared.
“What?””
“She told me you weren’t yourself anymore.””
Virginia’s expression hardened.
“I never said that.””
Rachel looked at her.
“Yes, you did.””
“You’re twisting my words.””
“No.””
Rachel’s voice stayed calm.
“You said Chloe changed you.””
The room became completely still.
Justin looked at his mother.
“Did you say that?””
Virginia didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Justin stepped back slightly.
“Why?””
Virginia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because it was true.””
I felt my chest tighten.
Justin looked at her.
“You think Chloe changed me?””
“I think you became someone I barely recognized.””
He laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“I became happier.””
Virginia flinched.
That one word hurt her.
Happy.
Because it was impossible to argue against.
Rachel looked at Justin.
“I didn’t come here to cause problems.””
He looked at her.
“Then why?””
She took a breath.
“Because I need you to know what happened the night before our wedding.””
The room went quiet.
Justin nodded.
“Tell me.””
Rachel looked down.
“I was going to marry you.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don’t.””
She sat down.
“I was excited. I was scared, but I was excited.””
Justin listened.
“Then your mother asked to meet me.””
His face changed.
“When?””
“The night before the rehearsal dinner.””
I frowned.
“But you said the night before the wedding.””
Rachel nodded.
“There were two conversations.””
Justin looked confused.
“Two?””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“The first one was when she told me she didn’t think I was right for you.””
Virginia crossed her arms.
“I was honest.””
Rachel looked at her.
“You were cruel.””
The word hung there.
Nobody moved.
Rachel continued.
“She told me that Justin had always needed someone stable. Someone who could support him.””
She looked at Justin.
“And then she told me I wasn’t that person.””
Justin’s expression darkened.
“What did you say?””
“I told her I loved you.””
“And?””
Rachel smiled sadly.
“She said love wasn’t enough.””
I looked at Virginia.
Because those words sounded exactly like something she would say.
Rachel continued.
“She told me that if I married you, she would never accept me.””
Justin whispered:
“Mom.””
Virginia looked away.
“I was protecting him.””
“No.””
His voice was stronger now.
“You were controlling the outcome.””
Rachel nodded.
“That’s what I realized later.””
Justin looked at her.
“What was the second conversation?””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“The second conversation was worse.””
She looked at Virginia.
“Because that was when she showed me the letters.””
Justin frowned.
“What letters?””
Rachel’s face changed.
“The ones she claimed you wrote.””
My heart stopped.
Justin looked confused.
“What?””
Rachel looked at him.
“She told me you were having doubts.””
The room went silent.
“She showed me messages that looked like you were questioning our marriage.””
Justin shook his head.
“I never sent anything like that.””
“I know that now.””
“How?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because years later, I found out they were fake.””
Justin went completely still.
“What?””
Virginia’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
Justin turned toward her.
“Mom.””
Nobody spoke.
“Did you fake messages from me?””
Virginia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was desperate.””
The answer was almost a whisper.
Justin stared at her.
“You did.””
“I thought she would leave before you got hurt.””
Rachel stood.
“And she succeeded.””
Virginia looked at her.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Rachel’s voice shook.
“She made me believe you didn’t want me.””
She looked at Justin.
“And she made you believe I abandoned you.””
Nobody moved.
The truth sat in the room.
Heavy.
Impossible to ignore.
Justin looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because by the time I found out, you were already married.””
I felt my heart drop.
Justin looked at her.
“When did you find out?””
“Two years ago.””
The silence that followed was unbearable.
“Two years?””
Rachel nodded.
“I found an old email from your mother.””
Justin looked at Virginia.
“And you still said nothing?””
Rachel looked down.
“Because I thought you were happy.””
I glanced at Justin.
Rachel continued.
“I saw pictures of you and Chloe. I saw your life.””
Her voice softened.
“I didn’t want to destroy that.””
For the first time, I believed her.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she wasn’t trying to take anything.
She was trying to explain.
Justin sat down slowly.
His entire past had been rewritten in one evening.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
It was an unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
At first, nobody spoke.
Then a woman’s voice came through.
A voice that made Justin’s face change.
Because he recognized it.
But it wasn’t Rachel.
It wasn’t Virginia.
It was someone else.
“Justin, I’m sorry to call you like this…”
He stood.
“Who is this?””
The woman hesitated.
Then whispered:
“My name is Claire. I was your mother’s friend the night she created those messages.””
Justin’s grip tightened around the phone.
May you like
And her next words changed everything.
“I kept the original evidence because I knew one day you would need to know what she really did.””
