Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The man sitting beside Eleanor Whitmore looked exactly as I remembered him.

Silver hair. Narrow shoulders. A familiar pair of gold-rimmed glasses.

His name was Jonathan Pierce.

He had been my father's personal attorney for more than twenty years. He had drafted the original trust documents, handled the estate, and helped establish the protective agreement between Richard Hayes and Arthur Whitmore.

But five years ago, shortly after the fire, I had received a letter stating that Jonathan had died in a car accident in Switzerland.

My father had trusted him.

I had trusted him.

And now he was sitting at the head table of the company my husband was trying to steal.

“Vivian?””

Gideon touched my arm.

“Are you all right?””

I swallowed.

“That's Jonathan Pierce.””

“I know.””

“You knew he was alive?””

“I found out three days ago.””

I turned toward him.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I wasn't certain he was willing to appear publicly.””

Across the entrance, Preston was still arguing with the security director.

“This is ridiculous!”” he snapped.

“My wife doesn't have authorization to enter the executive section.””

The security director looked at the document again.

“Sir, the authorization has been verified by the company's legal counsel.””

“I'm the vice president of this company!””

“And Mrs. Whitmore is the controlling representative of the Hayes Trust.””

Preston's face turned red.

Cassidy hurried toward him.

“Preston, what is happening?””

He grabbed her wrist.

“Get back inside.””

“But—”

“Now.””

She looked at me.

Her eyes traveled from my face to the scars exposed by my gown.

For a moment, she seemed unable to understand what she was seeing.

Then she whispered, “You actually came.””

I smiled.

“I told you I would.””

She glanced at Gideon.

“Why is he with you?””

Gideon answered before I could.

“Because I was invited.””

Preston stepped forward.

“Gideon, this is a private family matter.””

Gideon adjusted his cuff.

“Then perhaps you should stop conducting your family business using company funds.””

The security director looked between them.

“Mr. Ashford, would you like us to escort Mr. Whitmore to the executive lounge?””

“No,” Gideon replied.

“Let him attend his own anniversary party.””

Then he offered me his arm.

“Shall we?””

I took it.

And together, we walked inside.

The ballroom was breathtaking.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. White orchids decorated the tables. A massive screen displayed the company's anniversary logo.

Hundreds of guests occupied the room.

Investors.

Bankers.

Politicians.

Journalists.

Executives.

Every important person in Preston's professional life seemed to be there.

And every one of them turned to look when I entered.

I heard the whispers immediately.

“That's Vivian Whitmore.””

“I thought she was too unwell to attend.””

“Is that Gideon Ashford?””

“Why is he escorting her?””

A woman in a silver gown approached me.

“Vivian! It's been ages.””

Her name was Margaret Collins, one of the company's original investors.

I had met her several times before the fire.

She looked at my back, then quickly returned her gaze to my face.

“You look wonderful.””

“Thank you, Margaret.””

She hesitated.

“I wasn't sure you'd come tonight.””

“Neither was I.””

She smiled.

“Well, I'm glad you did.””

Behind her, Preston was approaching.

“Vivian, we need to talk.””

I turned.

“About what?””

He glanced at Gideon.

“Privately.””

“I'm comfortable talking here.””

“Don't embarrass yourself.””

I looked around the ballroom.

“That's interesting advice coming from you.””

His jaw tightened.

Cassidy appeared beside him.

“Vivian, I think there's been a misunderstanding.””

I raised an eyebrow.

“What misunderstanding?””

She smiled at the nearby guests.

“Preston is under tremendous pressure tonight. I'm sure you understand that he's trying to keep everything organized.””

“Of course.””

I looked at her stomach.

“How is the baby?””

Her smile stiffened.

“Fine.””

“Good. Children deserve a stable home.””

Preston grabbed my elbow.

“Enough.””

Gideon immediately stepped between us.

“Take your hand off her.””

Preston released me.

For a second, the two men stared at each other.

Then Gideon said quietly, “You should be careful. There are cameras everywhere.””

Preston looked around.

He forced a smile.

“Of course.””

He stepped away.

Cassidy followed him, but not before giving me one last hostile glance.

I watched them disappear into the crowd.

Then I turned toward the head table.

Jonathan Pierce was standing.

He held a champagne glass in one hand and a leather folder in the other.

When he saw me, his eyes softened.

“Vivian.””

I approached him.

“Jonathan.””

He smiled sadly.

“Your father would have been proud.””

I looked at the folder.

“Why did everyone believe you were dead?””

His expression changed.

“Because someone wanted me to disappear.””

He motioned toward an empty chair.

“Sit. There's something you need to see before the speeches begin.””

The folder contained an original legal document.

The paper was yellowed at the edges, but the signatures were unmistakable.

Richard Hayes.

Arthur Whitmore.

Jonathan Pierce.

And a fourth name.

Preston Whitmore.

I looked up.

“Preston signed this?””

“Yes,” Jonathan replied.

“When?””

“Six weeks before the fire.””

I began reading.

The agreement established the Hayes Family Trust's controlling interest in Whitmore Global and outlined the conditions under which the trust could intervene in corporate management.

But the final section was different from the version Gideon had shown me.

It contained an additional provision.

If any executive attempted to obtain control of the trust through coercion, fraud, or unauthorized transfer, the trust would have the right to immediately suspend that executive's authority and demand an independent investigation.

I read the clause again.

“Why is Preston's signature here?””

Jonathan leaned forward.

“Because he agreed to those conditions in exchange for the company's emergency financing.””

“But he later claimed he had controlling authority.””

“Exactly.””

I looked at the signature.

“Could he have forgotten?””

Jonathan gave a sad laugh.

“Preston doesn't forget things that cost him money.””

Gideon pulled out a chair beside me.

“Jonathan, tell her about the missing amendment.””

The attorney opened the folder.

“There was another document. A private amendment that Richard prepared shortly before his death.””

I stared at him.

“What did it say?””

Jonathan removed a sealed envelope.

“Your father left you the right to appoint an independent chairman if the trust ever had to exercise its protective authority.””

I looked at Gideon.

“Independent chairman?””

Jonathan nodded.

“Someone who could oversee the company while the financial investigation was conducted.””

“And who did my father nominate?””

Jonathan opened the envelope.

A name appeared beneath Richard's signature.

*GIDEON ASHFORD.*

I turned toward Gideon.

He looked uncomfortable.

“You were nominated by my father?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the appointment was conditional. I didn't want to interfere before you had decided what you wanted.””

I studied him.

“You could have taken control of the company years ago.””

“No.””

He looked directly at me.

“Your father gave me the opportunity to protect your interests. Not to take them away.””

I glanced down at the documents.

For the first time, I understood why Gideon had been so careful.

He wasn't simply helping me expose Preston.

He was fulfilling a promise to my father.

A burst of applause interrupted us.

Arthur Whitmore had stepped onto the stage.

He looked older than I remembered, but his confidence remained intact.

He approached the microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the tenth anniversary of Whitmore Global.””

The room quieted.

Arthur smiled.

“Ten years ago, this company was a small operation with a big ambition. Today, we are one of the most respected financial institutions in the country.””

Applause followed.

He continued.

“Our success has been built on trust, discipline, and the belief that strong leadership creates lasting value.””

I almost laughed.

Arthur was standing beneath a giant screen displaying the company's values while the evidence of his financial misconduct sat in my handbag.

He gestured toward Preston.

“And tonight, I am delighted to announce the appointment of our next chief executive officer.””

The ballroom erupted in applause.

Preston stepped onto the stage.

Cassidy stood near the front, beaming.

Arthur shook his son's hand.

“Preston has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to this organization. His leadership has helped guide us through difficult years.””

Preston took the microphone.

“Thank you, Father.””

He looked toward the crowd.

Then his eyes found me.

For a brief moment, his confidence faltered.

But he recovered.

“Tonight is about the future. It's about building something that lasts beyond any one individual.””

He smiled.

“And it's about recognizing the people who stand beside us.””

Cassidy began moving toward the stage.

Preston held out his hand.

She took it.

The audience murmured.

Arthur smiled.

“Some of you may have noticed that Preston has a special announcement tonight.””

Preston raised the microphone.

“I have spent a long time thinking about what family means.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Sometimes, life takes unexpected turns. Sometimes, people change. And sometimes, we must make difficult decisions to protect the future.””

I understood immediately.

He was preparing to announce his relationship with Cassidy before publicly humiliating me.

He wanted the cameras to capture my reaction.

He wanted the audience to see a rejected wife.

He wanted sympathy.

Preston took a breath.

“I am pleased to announce that Cassidy Vaughn and I are expecting a child.””

The ballroom filled with applause.

Cassidy placed a hand over her belly.

Then Preston continued.

“And I believe it's time to be honest about my personal life. My marriage to Vivian has been over for a long time.””

The room fell quiet.

He looked directly at me.

“Vivian and I have been living separate lives. I wish her nothing but happiness.””

A few guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Cassidy took the microphone.

“I know this hasn't been easy for anyone, but we're excited to begin a new chapter.””

She smiled.

Then she added, “We hope everyone will respect our privacy.””

I stood.

Gideon didn't stop me.

Neither did Jonathan.

I walked toward the stage.

The crowd parted.

Preston watched me approach.

“Vivian,” he said quietly, “don't.””

I continued.

The event coordinator hurried toward us.

“Mrs. Whitmore, perhaps we should—”

Gideon appeared behind me.

“She's the controlling shareholder. Let her speak.””

The coordinator stopped.

Preston's face went white.

I reached the stage.

Then I turned toward the audience.

“Good evening.””

My voice sounded calm.

Steady.

“I apologize for interrupting what was supposed to be a celebration.””

I glanced at the screen behind Preston.

His name appeared beneath the words:

*PRESTON WHITMORE — INCOMING CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER.*

I looked back at the audience.

“Before this announcement is finalized, I believe everyone deserves to understand who actually controls Whitmore Global.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“This is inappropriate.””

I smiled.

“Then let's make it appropriate.””

I handed the microphone to Jonathan.

He stepped onto the stage.

“My name is Jonathan Pierce. I was Richard Hayes's personal attorney and the original legal adviser responsible for establishing the Hayes Family Trust.””

A ripple of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Arthur froze.

Preston looked as though someone had pulled the floor out from beneath him.

Jonathan opened the folder.

“And I have brought the original agreement signed by Arthur Whitmore and Preston Whitmore five years ago.””

He held up the document.

“An agreement that explicitly prohibits the transfer of voting rights without the trust's authorization.””

Arthur rushed toward the microphone.

“This is a fabrication!””

Jonathan didn't blink.

“Then I'm sure you'll have no difficulty explaining your signature.””

The room erupted.

Preston grabbed the microphone.

“Security!””

Nobody moved.

Gideon stepped forward.

“Before anyone touches these documents, I'd suggest looking at the evidence attached to them.””

He turned toward the large screen.

A series of bank transfers appeared.

Then the forged authorization forms.

Then the shell company records.

The room became completely silent.

Preston stared at the screen.

Cassidy's face drained of color.

And then Jonathan displayed the final document.

A signed statement from the original financial auditor.

It confirmed that eleven million dollars had been transferred through an account fraudulently opened in my name.

I took the microphone.

“My husband told me I had nothing without him.””

I looked at Preston.

“He was wrong.””

Then I turned toward the audience.

“I have never authorized those transfers. I have never signed those documents. And I will not accept responsibility for crimes committed by someone who used my name without my consent.””

Preston stepped toward me.

“You don't understand what you're doing!””

I met his eyes.

“No, Preston.””

I lowered my voice.

“For the first time, I understand exactly what you've been doing.””

A sudden voice interrupted us.

“Vivian!””

Cassidy had stepped forward.

She was crying.

“You're destroying our family!””

I looked at her.

“You helped him do it.””

She shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Jonathan removed another sheet from the folder.

“Ms. Vaughn, would you like to explain why your signature appears on the original shell-company registration?””

Cassidy stopped crying.

The silence became unbearable.

Preston turned toward her.

“What?””

Jonathan continued.

“Or perhaps you'd like to explain why you accessed Mrs. Whitmore's medical records yesterday using a forged authorization.””

Cassidy's lips parted.

Arthur grabbed her arm.

“Don't say anything.””

But it was too late.

Every camera in the room was pointed toward them.

And before Cassidy could answer, Gideon's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

Then he looked at me.

“Vivian, we have a problem.””

“What?””

He showed me a message from Eleanor.

*The original audit isn't complete. There's another beneficiary listed in the private agreement.*

I frowned.

“Who?””

Gideon turned the phone toward me.

One name appeared.

*CASSIDY VAUGHN.*

My heart stopped.

Why would my father have included Cassidy in an agreement that had been created years before I ever met her?

Then a second message arrived.

*She isn't just Preston's mistress. She is connected to the original Hayes family trust.*

I looked at Cassidy.

She was no longer crying.

May you like

She was smiling.

And suddenly, I realized that the woman I had thought was merely trying to steal my husband might have been trying to steal something far more valuable all along.
