Chapter 8: The Plan Behind the Early Mornings

Dana's office was on the third floor of a brick building downtown.

I arrived at 8:30 Saturday morning carrying my laptop, my notebook, and a folder containing every school attendance email I could find.

Dana was already waiting.

She wore a charcoal suit and had her reading glasses pushed up into her hair.

"Sit down.""

I placed the folder on her desk.

She opened it.

For the next forty minutes, we reviewed everything.

The arrival times.

The messages from Brianna.

The teacher's observations.

The photographs of Charlie's notebook.

The messages from Claire.

Dana made notes in the margins.

Finally, she looked up.

"Have you asked Evan about changing Charlie's school?""

"No.""

"Has he mentioned it before?""

"He said once that my neighborhood wasn't as convenient for commuting.""

"Did he mention a specific school?""

I shook my head.

Dana leaned back.

"All right. We need to separate what we know from what we suspect.""

I nodded.

"We know Charlie has repeatedly arrived early. We know he's asked for extra food. We know he has expressed concern about whether breakfast will be available. We also know there's a possible discussion about changing schools and increasing his time with his father.""

"And the notebook?""

"It supports his account, but we need to be careful about how it's presented. We shouldn't treat every entry as a complete account of events without context.""

I looked down.

"I understand.""

Dana folded her hands.

"There's another issue. You said Evan mentioned his mother.""

"Yes. Charlie wrote that Evan told him he'd be sleeping at Nora's house next week.""

"Do you know why?""

"No.""

Dana looked at me.

"Have you spoken to Nora?""

I shook my head.

"Not yet.""

She nodded.

"Let's start there.""

I called Nora from the parking lot.

She answered warmly.

"Melissa, sweetheart! Is everything okay?""

"Hi, Nora. I need to ask you something.""

"Of course.""

"Did Evan tell you he wanted Charlie to stay with you next week?""

There was a pause.

"Yes. Why?""

"Did he explain why?""

"He said he and Claire had some things to sort out with their apartment.""

I frowned.

"What things?""

"Well, they're looking at moving.""

"Moving where?""

"Closer to Evan's office.""

I leaned against the car.

"When?""

"I think sometime after Thanksgiving.""

I closed my eyes.

"Has he talked to you about Charlie changing schools?""

Another pause.

Then Nora said:

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What did he say?""

"He mentioned that the current school was inconvenient for his commute.""

"Did he say he wanted Charlie to move?""

"He said it might make things easier for everyone.""

I looked toward the street.

"Did he tell you I agreed?""

Nora went quiet.

Finally, she said:

"Well, I assumed you two had discussed it.""

"We haven't.""

"Oh.""

Her voice changed.

"Melissa, I didn't know.""

I believed her.

Or at least, I wanted to.

"Can I ask you something else?""

"Of course.""

"Why does Evan want Charlie to stay with you next week?""

Nora sighed.

"He's going to be very busy. Claire has a work conference, and Evan said he needs time to organize the move.""

I stared at the pavement.

"Is Charlie going to be staying with you every night?""

"I don't know. He said perhaps Monday through Thursday.""

Four nights.

While Evan arranged a new apartment.

While Claire attended a conference.

While someone apparently decided where Charlie would go to school.

I thanked Nora and ended the call.

Then I sent Dana a summary.

She replied almost immediately.

*Dana:* Please do not agree to any school changes or schedule changes without reviewing them with me.

I returned to the office.

Dana was already typing.

"We need to establish whether Evan has taken any formal steps.""

"What do you mean?""

"School applications, enrollment inquiries, address changes, anything like that.""

I thought about Charlie's notebook.

Daddy said I have to say I like it there.

I felt sick.

"What if he's already arranged something?""

"Then we need to know.""

That afternoon, I contacted Charlie's school.

I asked the administration whether anyone had requested transfer information or copies of his records.

The woman at the front desk checked.

"Actually, yes.""

I gripped the phone.

"When?""

"About two weeks ago.""

"Who called?""

"Mr. Parker.""

Evan's last name.

"What did he ask?""

"He requested information about transferring Charlie to a school closer to his new residence.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did he submit anything?""

"No formal application. He asked about the process and what documentation would be required.""

"Did he mention me?""

There was a pause.

"He said he was discussing it with the other parent.""

I thanked her.

Then I called Dana.

She wasn't surprised.

"That's why we need everything in writing.""

I spent the rest of the weekend trying to keep Charlie's world normal.

We went to the park.

We bought ingredients for homemade pizza.

He helped me spread tomato sauce across the dough and put too much cheese on one side.

He laughed when I pretended the pizza had collapsed under its own weight.

But he was quieter than usual.

On Sunday evening, while we were watching a movie, he suddenly asked:

"Mom, do you know where Grandma's house is?""

"Of course.""

"Could I live there?""

I turned toward him.

"Why would you want to live at Grandma's?""

He shrugged.

"Daddy said I might.""

I paused the movie.

"Did he tell you why?""

"He said he has to do grown-up things.""

"Okay.""

"And he said I might go to a different school.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"How do you feel about that?""

Charlie looked at the television.

"I don't want to.""

"Why?""

"My friends are here.""

I nodded.

"That makes sense.""

He picked at the blanket.

"Would you still come to my new school?""

I moved closer.

"Charlie, sweetheart, nobody has decided you're changing schools.""

"But Daddy said it's already happening.""

I took his hands.

"Sometimes grown-ups talk about plans before they've made decisions. If something affects you, both parents need to talk about it.""

He looked at me.

"Can I tell you something?""

"Always.""

"Grandma said Daddy is getting a bigger house.""

I waited.

"She said there might be a room for me.""

"Would you like that?""

He thought about it.

"Maybe.""

Then he added:

"But I want my room here too.""

I kissed his forehead.

"You will always have your room here.""

He smiled.

Then he asked:

"Can I bring my toothbrush?""

I looked at him.

"Which one?""

"The blue one.""

"Of course.""

He seemed relieved.

That night, I received a call from Nora.

Her voice sounded different.

Less cheerful.

More serious.

"Melissa, I think we need to talk.""

"About Charlie?""

"Yes.""

I sat down.

"What happened?""

"Evan came over this afternoon. He brought some paperwork.""

"What paperwork?""

"Something about Charlie's school.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did he ask you to sign anything?""

"No. He wanted me to write a letter saying I could provide childcare during the week.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did he explain why?""

"He said it would help with the new custody arrangement.""

I stared at the wall.

"New custody arrangement?""

Nora sighed.

"Melissa, he told me he was planning to request more time with Charlie.""

I didn't answer.

Then she said something unexpected.

"He also told me you were struggling financially and might move out of the area.""

I sat up.

"What?""

"He said you were considering moving closer to your sister.""

I had never said anything like that.

"That's not true.""

"I know that now.""

"Why would he tell you that?""

Nora's voice trembled.

"Because he said Charlie needed a stable school arrangement before you made any sudden decisions.""

I stood and walked toward the kitchen.

"Nora, I have never planned to move.""

"I understand.""

"Did Evan say anything else?""

She was silent for a moment.

Then:

"He said Claire could handle most of Charlie's weekday mornings once they moved.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did he tell you what that meant?""

"No.""

I looked toward the hallway.

Charlie was asleep.

I lowered my voice.

"Nora, I need you to be honest with me. Do you think Charlie is being looked after properly?""

She didn't answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice had broken.

"I don't know, sweetheart.""

That was the first honest thing she'd said to me in months.

She continued.

"I thought everything was fine. Evan said you were upset because of Claire. I thought you were trying to make things difficult.""

I swallowed.

"And now?""

"Now I remember something.""

"What?""

"Last month, Charlie stayed with me for an afternoon. He asked if I had cereal.""

I waited.

"I told him we had plenty. He ate two bowls.""

My throat tightened.

"Did he say anything?""

Nora began crying.

"He asked if he could put some in a little container to take home.""

I closed my eyes.

"What did you tell him?""

"I asked why. He said he wanted to save it.""

The silence between us was enormous.

Then Nora whispered:

"Melissa, I think I've been defending my son when I should have been paying attention to my grandson.""

I sat down.

For the first time in months, I didn't feel like I was standing alone against Evan's entire family.

But there was something else Nora needed to tell me.

She took a shaky breath.

"Evan showed me a document today. He said it was only a draft, but...""

"What document?""

"A proposed custody schedule.""

"What about it?""

She hesitated.

Then she said:

"It gives Charlie to Evan five nights a week.""

I felt the room tilt.

"And your house?""

"One night.""

I gripped the edge of the counter.

"What about me?""

Nora's voice dropped.

"You're listed as having alternate weekends.""

I couldn't breathe.

That wasn't a small adjustment.

That was almost an entirely new childhood.

And Evan had apparently been discussing it with his mother, his girlfriend, and possibly the school before he had even spoken to me.

I called Dana immediately.

She listened.

Then she said:

"Melissa, don't panic. A proposed schedule isn't a court order. But I want you to send me everything Nora can provide.""

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated again.

It was a message from Claire.

*Claire:* I need to tell you something about the new apartment.

I opened it.

*Claire:* Evan isn't just moving closer to his office.

Another message arrived.

*Claire:* He's already signed a lease.

May you like

Then a final message.

*Claire:* And Melissa, he put Charlie's name on the bedroom door before telling you anything.
