Chapter 5: The Security Footage Didn't Lie

The hotel had a private conference room behind the reception area.

Ten minutes earlier, I wouldn't have imagined being invited inside.

Now my father was asking me whether I felt comfortable sitting down while the hotel reviewed the security footage.

I looked at Grace.

She was beginning to wake again, her little mouth moving as she searched for comfort.

“I'd rather stay with her,” I said.

“Then we'll stay together.””

Dad didn't hesitate.

He asked an employee to bring a comfortable chair into the conference room and have the room temperature adjusted for the baby.

It was such a simple gesture.

Yet after the way Marcus had treated me, the difference felt enormous.

One man had looked at my daughter and seen an inconvenience.

My father looked at her and saw someone who deserved care.

We entered the room together.

Marcus followed with a tablet and a folder.

Thomas, the security guard, came in behind him.

A woman from the hotel's corporate office joined us by video call on a large screen. She introduced herself as Elaine Porter, the regional operations director.

Victoria arrived last.

She had spent several minutes speaking on her phone in the lobby, and when she entered, her expression was no longer openly amused.

She sat opposite my father and crossed her legs.

“I hope this won't take long.””

Dad ignored the remark.

“Mr. Reed, please show us the footage from the lobby.””

Marcus connected the tablet to the room's display.

The screen showed the marble floor, the reception desk, the lounge entrance, and the seating area where I had been sitting.

I watched myself enter the frame.

There I was, carrying Grace against my chest, looking tired but peaceful.

I approached the reception desk.

I spoke briefly with an employee.

Then I moved toward the lounge and sat down.

Nothing unusual happened.

No argument.

No raised voices.

No disruption.

For several minutes, I simply rocked my daughter and looked at my phone.

Then Victoria entered the frame.

She walked toward me, stopped in front of the sofa, and said something.

The video had no sound, but her gestures were unmistakable.

She pointed toward the entrance.

I looked up.

I shook my head.

She leaned closer.

I shifted Grace against my chest and stood.

Then Victoria raised her hand.

The room went silent as the footage showed her striking me across the face.

I flinched.

My arms tightened around Grace.

Victoria stepped back.

Even without sound, I could see the contempt on her face.

She pointed at me again.

Then she turned toward the reception desk.

I watched the next few minutes unfold.

I approached Marcus.

I spoke to him.

He glanced toward Victoria.

Then he gestured toward the doors.

I shook my head and pointed toward my cheek.

He gestured again.

Toward the exit.

I felt my throat tighten.

It was worse seeing it from the outside.

In the moment, I had been frightened, confused, and desperate to protect my daughter.

On the screen, the sequence was painfully clear.

I was trying to explain what had happened.

Marcus wasn't listening.

Victoria was smiling.

My father remained completely still.

When the video ended, nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Elaine Porter broke the silence from the screen.

“Mr. Reed, did you review this footage before ordering Ms. Brooks to leave?””

“No.””

“Did you consult security?””

“Not before the initial decision.””

“Did you obtain a statement from Ms. Brooks?””

“I spoke with her briefly.””

“You've just watched a recording showing Mrs. Hale striking her. Does that alter your understanding of the incident?””

Marcus shifted in his chair.

“Yes.””

Elaine waited.

“Please explain.””

Marcus cleared his throat.

“The footage indicates that Ms. Brooks was not behaving aggressively before the physical contact occurred.””

“That isn't what I asked,” Elaine replied.

“Does it alter your understanding of the incident?””

“Yes,” he said more quietly.

“It does.””

Victoria suddenly leaned forward.

“This footage is misleading.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She pointed at the screen.

“You can't hear what she said to me. She was rude. She made insulting remarks. She deliberately provoked me.””

Elaine's expression remained neutral.

“Mrs. Hale, the footage shows you approaching Ms. Brooks before any apparent confrontation.””

“You don't know what happened before the recording began.””

“Then we will review the preceding footage as well.””

Victoria's face tightened.

“That won't be necessary.””

My father looked at her.

“Why not?””

“Because this is a private matter.””

“You made it a public matter when you struck my daughter in the middle of a hotel lobby.””

“I barely touched her!””

I looked at Victoria.

“Then why are you so concerned about what the cameras show?””

Her mouth snapped shut.

For a brief moment, I thought she might finally admit what she had done.

Instead, she turned toward Elaine.

“I expect the hotel to handle this discreetly.””

Elaine folded her hands.

“Our responsibility is to establish what happened and respond according to our policies.””

“Your responsibility is to your guests.””

“Yes,” Elaine said.

“Including Ms. Brooks.””

Victoria looked stunned.

My father leaned back slightly.

“Continue the recording.””

Marcus moved to the next segment.

The footage showed Victoria returning to the lounge after the slap.

She spoke with Marcus.

He listened attentively.

She gestured toward me.

Marcus nodded.

Then he approached me and ordered me to leave.

I watched the scene again, this time with a new understanding.

Victoria hadn't simply struck me in anger.

She had immediately sought assistance from someone she believed would take her side.

And he had.

The video continued.

It showed me making the phone call.

It showed Victoria laughing.

It showed the two men in suits entering the lobby.

And finally, it showed my father arriving.

When the recording ended, Elaine asked Thomas to describe what he had witnessed.

Thomas stood.

“I saw Mrs. Hale strike Ms. Brooks.

I approached after the manager requested that I escort Ms. Brooks outside.””

“Did Ms. Brooks threaten anyone?””

“No, ma'am.””

“Did she behave aggressively?””

“No.””

“Why didn't you escort her outside?””

Thomas glanced at Marcus.

“Because she was holding a newborn, and I felt we should establish what happened before removing her.””

Elaine nodded.

“Thank you.””

Victoria looked furious.

“So now we're taking statements from security guards? Is that really necessary?””

Elaine replied calmly.

“Yes.””

“Do you know how many years I've been a guest here?””

“I understand that you've stayed at this property on numerous occasions.””

“Then you understand that I expect better treatment.””

Elaine's expression didn't change.

“Mrs. Hale, being a valued guest does not exempt anyone from our conduct policies.””

Victoria turned toward my father.

“You're enjoying this, aren't you?””

“No,” Dad replied.

“I'm disappointed.””

“In me?””

“In the fact that you seem more concerned about the consequences of your behavior than the person you hurt.””

She looked away.

For a moment, I thought the meeting might finally be over.

Then Elaine opened a document on her screen.

“Before we conclude, there's another matter I need to raise.””

Marcus looked up.

Victoria stiffened.

“What matter?””

Elaine glanced at her notes.

“Earlier this morning, our corporate office received a request concerning an incident involving a guest at another Brooks Hospitality property.””

Victoria's face changed.

My father leaned forward.

“What incident?””

“We're still verifying the details,” Elaine said.

“However, the report appears to involve Mrs. Hale and a complaint about discriminatory treatment.””

Victoria shot to her feet.

“This is outrageous!””

Elaine remained composed.

“I haven't made any determination. I'm simply informing you that the report exists.””

“Who made it?””

“We are not disclosing the complainant's identity during this preliminary review.””

Victoria looked at Marcus.

“Did you know about this?””

“No, ma'am.””

“Then why is it being discussed here?””

“Because the corporate office has a responsibility to determine whether there is a pattern of misconduct.””

Victoria turned toward my father.

“You can't use your position to destroy my reputation because your daughter had an argument with me.””

Dad's expression hardened.

“No one is trying to destroy your reputation. We're investigating what happened.””

“An investigation is already a punishment!””

“Only if you believe the truth is something to fear.””

She stared at him.

Then she looked at me.

“You have no idea what you've started.””

I felt a chill run down my spine.

There was something in her voice that sounded less like an insult and more like a warning.

My father noticed it too.

“Is that a threat, Mrs. Hale?””

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“Then explain what you meant.””

She snatched up her purse.

“This meeting is over.””

Elaine spoke before she could reach the door.

“Mrs. Hale, we need your written account of today's incident before you leave.””

Victoria froze.

“I will not be interrogated.””

“You are not being interrogated. We are requesting a statement as part of an investigation.””

“Then have your lawyers contact mine.””

“That is your choice.””

Victoria turned toward the door.

But before she reached it, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

The color drained from her face.

She answered immediately.

“Hello?””

The room was quiet enough for me to hear the voice on the other end, although I couldn't make out the words.

Victoria's expression changed with every passing second.

First irritation.

Then disbelief.

Then something that looked remarkably like panic.

“No,” she whispered.

“You can't be serious.””

She listened again.

Her hand tightened around the phone.

“But I was told this had already been taken care of.””

My father looked at Elaine.

Elaine looked at her screen.

Victoria turned away from us, lowering her voice.

“I don't care what the report says. Find out who filed it.””

Another pause.

Then she said something that made my stomach twist.

“If this gets back to the family, everything is going to fall apart.””

She abruptly ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Victoria stood with her back to us, breathing hard.

My father finally spoke.

“Mrs. Hale, what family are you referring to?””

She turned around so quickly that her purse struck the chair beside her.

“None of your business.””

Dad's gaze remained steady.

“Perhaps not. But if another complaint exists, we have a responsibility to determine whether it is connected to today's incident.””

Victoria shook her head.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

“Then the evidence should clear things up.””

She stared at him.

Then she looked at me.

And the expression on her face told me something important.

She wasn't simply worried about the slap anymore.

She was worried that someone else might speak.

Someone who knew her.

May you like

Someone who had seen what she was capable of when she believed nobody could hold her accountable.

And if that person came forward, the woman who had treated me like I was beneath her might finally have to answer for more than one ugly afternoon.
