Chapter 9: The Message That Changed My Decision

I didn't reply to David immediately.

I read his messages again, hoping that another interpretation might make them less alarming.

There was something I didn't tell you at dinner.

The property agreement wasn't the only document I found.

Ethan has been lying to both of us about something much bigger than Vanessa.

I looked toward the closed bedroom door.

The house was quiet.

Ethan was sleeping in the guest room, or at least he had said he would.

Noah's bedroom was at the other end of the hallway.

For the first time all evening, I felt afraid.

Not of a confrontation.

Not of losing my marriage.

I was afraid that I had only begun to understand how little I knew about the life I had been living.

I typed a response.

What did you find?

David replied almost immediately.

I'd rather explain in person. I don't want to send something important without context.

I hesitated.

Then I wrote, Can you meet tomorrow?

He suggested a coffee shop near the park at ten.

I agreed.

After putting my phone down, I lay awake for nearly an hour.

My thoughts kept circling back to Ethan.

He had been lying about Vanessa.

He had discussed leaving me.

He had considered offering her a place in our home.

What could possibly be bigger than that?

I tried to imagine what David might have found.

Financial documents?

More messages?

Evidence that Ethan had made other promises?

Every possibility made my stomach tighten.

Eventually, exhaustion pulled me into a restless sleep.

The next morning, I woke before my alarm.

For several seconds, I forgot what had happened.

Then I saw Ethan's side of the bed, empty beneath the neatly folded blanket I had placed there the night before.

The memory returned all at once.

The birthday dinner.

The photographs.

The email.

The question I had asked him.

Would you have left me?

His silence.

I got dressed and went downstairs.

Ethan was already in the kitchen, making coffee.

May you like

He looked up when I entered.

“Good
