Chapter 6: The Sister Who Survived

For six years, I had mourned my sister.

I kept her photographs in a drawer because looking at them hurt too much.

I saved old voicemails because I was afraid one day I would forget the sound of her voice.

I blamed myself for moving forward.

For laughing.

For celebrating birthdays.

For living a life she never got to live.

And now she was on a phone screen.

Alive.

Standing beside the man who had destroyed my life.

I couldn’t speak.

I couldn’t breathe.

I could only stare.

“Emily?””

Her face changed when she heard my voice.

Pain.

Guilt.

Love.

Everything I had been missing for six years appeared in her eyes at once.

“Claire…”

Her voice broke.

That was all it took.

One word.

My sister’s voice.

The person I thought I had lost forever.

I stepped forward.

Then stopped.

Because Daniel was standing next to her.

And I had learned something important in the last few hours.

The people closest to me were capable of becoming strangers.

“Where are you?”” I whispered.

Emily looked away.

Daniel answered for her.

“Somewhere safe.””

My eyes moved to him.

The man I married.

The man who held me after Emily’s funeral.

The man who told me we would survive losing her.

“You knew.””

He smiled slightly.

“I knew many things.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me think she was dead.””

A pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The simplicity of the answer hurt more than an excuse.

No denial.

No apology.

Just the truth.

I looked at Emily.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to come back.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Several times.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

She looked at Daniel.

And I understood.

He wasn’t just standing beside her.

He was controlling the entire conversation.

Victoria lowered the phone slightly.

“Don’t waste time with emotional reunions.””

Her voice was cold.

“Claire, you’re making this much harder than it needs to be.””

I stared at her.

“You held me at Emily’s funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You told me she was gone.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me grieve.””

Victoria didn’t blink.

“I watched you survive.””

The words were so cruel that for a second, I couldn’t respond.

Then Ethan stepped forward.

“You’re sick.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Careful.””

“You all lied to her for years.””

“And you helped.””

The accusation hit him.

Hard.

Victoria smiled.

“That’s the difference between us, Ethan.””

She looked at me.

“We know exactly what we are.””

The basement felt smaller.

Everyone in that room had pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

And I was done being the last person to know.

“Emily,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Tell me what happened.””

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“No?””

“You don’t understand the situation.””

I almost laughed.

“Daniel, I was locked in a garage with a broken leg.””

His expression didn’t change.

“You’re emotional.””

“Don’t.””

My voice was quiet.

But everyone stopped.

“Don’t use that word.””

I pointed toward the phone.

“You don’t get to call me emotional after everything you did.””

For the first time, his face changed.

A flicker.

Annoyance.

Good.

I wanted him uncomfortable.

I wanted him to feel something.

Anything.

Emily looked at me.

“Claire, listen.””

“I’m listening.””

“I never wanted you involved.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

She closed her eyes.

“I found out about Daniel’s fraud.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don’t know everything.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Enough.””

Emily ignored him.

“I found evidence that Daniel wasn’t just stealing money from the company.””

The room went silent.

“He was building a system.””

My stomach tightened.

“A system?””

“A system to control everything.””

She looked at me.

“The company. The employees. The family.””

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Emily.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“I’m done being afraid.””

For a moment, I saw the sister I remembered.

The one who never backed down.

The one who fought for people who couldn’t fight for themselves.

“He created fake employees,” Emily continued.

I nodded.

“I found that.””

“He created fake identities.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“He wasn’t just moving money.””

She looked at Daniel.

“He was creating people who didn’t exist.””

I felt a chill.

“Why?””

“Because those identities could own assets.””

The flash drive in my pocket suddenly felt heavier.

“The offshore accounts.””

“Yes.””

“The fake vendors.””

“Yes.””

“The accident.””

Emily looked down.

And that silence told me everything.

“Daniel arranged it.””

The words came out slowly.

“He knew you were close.””

My heart broke.

“You knew?””

Emily looked at me.

“I knew he was watching you.””

“And you didn’t warn me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“The night before the crash.””

I stared.

“I called you.””

My mind froze.

I remembered.

A missed call.

One from an unknown number.

I ignored it because I was angry at Daniel that night.

Because he had canceled dinner.

Because I thought he was hiding work from me.

“I thought it was spam.””

Emily looked devastated.

“I left a voicemail.””

My breathing changed.

“What did you say?””

“I told you not to trust him.””

Silence.

The room tilted.

I had deleted that voicemail.

Months later.

Because I couldn’t listen to unknown messages after Emily died.

A terrible realization settled over me.

I had been so close.

So close to knowing.

Daniel had been seconds away from losing control.

That was why he acted.

That was why he crashed my car.

That was why he locked me away.

“Why did you stay hidden?”” I asked.

Emily’s face broke.

“Because I saw what he did to anyone who got close.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Your sister was supposed to be a warning.””

I looked at Ethan.

His face was pale.

“What does that mean?””

Emily answered.

“Daniel wanted Ethan to think I was dead.””

Ethan looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel knew you cared about me.””

The silence that followed was painful.

Ethan looked away.

“You knew?””

Emily nodded.

“I knew you were helping me.””

A tear slipped down her face.

“And I knew you were scared.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I should have done more.””

“Yes.””

Emily’s answer was gentle.

But honest.

“You should have.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

No one spoke.

Then Daniel interrupted.

“Beautiful.””

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled.

“Really.””

His voice was almost amused.

“A family therapy session in the middle of a basement.””

He looked at me.

“But none of you understand something.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“You’re still thinking this is about money.””

The room went quiet.

“It isn’t.””

Daniel stepped closer to the camera.

“It’s about control.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

“I spent years building something.””

Emily shook her head.

“You destroyed people.””

“No.””

Daniel smiled.

“I protected what was mine.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Ownership.

He believed people belonged to him.

His company.

His family.

His wife.

His secrets.

Victoria stepped closer to me.

“Claire, give me the drive.””

I didn’t move.

“I don’t have it.””

Daniel smiled.

“You always were a terrible liar.””

My heart stopped.

“How do you know?””

“Because I know you.””

A pause.

“And because you made the same mistake Emily made.””

I looked at Emily.

“What mistake?””

Daniel’s smile widened.

“You both believed the truth was enough.””

The basement lights suddenly flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then the phone screen went black.

The call ended.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Victoria reached for my arm.

Ethan stepped between us.

And from upstairs, we heard a sound.

A door opening.

Then another.

More footsteps.

Not one person.

Several.

Daniel had brought backup.

But before anyone could reach me, Emily’s voice came through the dead phone.

The call hadn’t ended.

It had only muted.

“Claire.””

I looked at the screen.

A final message appeared.

A location.

And three words.

*Come alone. Trust nobody.*

Then another message appeared underneath.

May you like

From Emily.

*Especially Ethan.*
