The Room She Stole From Me / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Announcement She Planned in My Name

By six o'clock, the resort had begun to glow beneath the evening lights.

The palm trees along the main walkway were illuminated from below.

Lanterns flickered beside the pool.

Guests in elegant evening clothes gathered near the restaurants, while the sound of live piano music drifted through the lobby.

It was exactly the atmosphere I had imagined when I planned our family vacation.

A beautiful evening.

A wonderful meal.

A chance to sit with the people I loved without rushing through conversations or worrying about tomorrow.

Instead, I was sitting in my suite, wondering what my daughter-in-law had planned to announce at a dinner I had never authorized.

I had changed into a simple navy dress.

My hair was neatly arranged, and a pair of pearl earrings rested against my ears.

I wasn't dressing for Vanessa.

I wasn't trying to prove anything to her friends.

I simply refused to allow someone else's behavior to dictate how I felt about myself.

At six fifteen, Eleanor called.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I wanted to update you on the event request.""

"Go ahead.""

"We've reviewed the original instructions and spoken with the employee who received them.""

"And?""

"The caller requested that the dinner be presented as a family celebration. They also asked that a folder containing printed materials be placed at each guest's seat.""

I sat straighter.

"Printed materials?""

"Yes, ma'am. The request specified eight copies.""

"What were the materials supposed to contain?""

"We don't know. Nothing was delivered to the event team.""

"Was the folder mentioned by name?""

"Yes. The notes refer to it as a family announcement packet.""

I stared at the wall.

A family announcement packet.

That was not how people usually described a menu, a birthday card, or a vacation itinerary.

"Did the caller provide a title for the announcement?""

Eleanor paused.

"One phrase appears in the notes.""

I waited.

"Family transition.""

The words made my stomach tighten.

"Family transition?""

"Yes, ma'am.""

I looked toward the terrace doors.

"Thank you, Eleanor. Please keep me informed.""

"Of course.""

After we ended the call, I stood and walked to the window.

I had spent years building a life in which I didn't need to depend on anyone's approval.

My late husband and I had started with modest investments and a determination to provide stability for our family.

After his death, I had continued managing our holdings.

I learned to evaluate properties, negotiate contracts, and recognize when an apparently attractive opportunity concealed a risk.

Eventually, the investments grew into a portfolio that included hotels, commercial properties, and several other ventures.

I had never considered those accomplishments a reason to demand special treatment from my family.

If anything, I had tried to keep my business life separate from my personal relationships.

Daniel knew I was financially comfortable.

He knew I had properties and investments.

But he had never asked to examine my accounts, and I had never offered to turn family gatherings into business briefings.

I wanted my son to love me because I was his mother.

Not because I could make his life easier.

That was why I had rarely discussed ownership details with him.

Now I wondered whether my discretion had allowed Vanessa to build an entirely fictional picture of what she could claim.

My phone rang.

Daniel's name appeared on the screen.

"Hello?""

"Mom, are you downstairs?""

"Not yet.""

"Could you come to the lobby?""

"Why?""

He hesitated.

"Vanessa wants to apologize.""

I didn't answer immediately.

"Has she explained the dinner?""

"Not completely.""

"Then why should I come downstairs?""

"Because her friends are getting upset, and she thinks we should all talk before dinner.""

I almost smiled at the absurdity.

Her friends had been given rooms they hadn't booked.

An unauthorized dinner had been placed on hold.

And somehow, I was still being asked to help everyone feel comfortable.

"Daniel, I am willing to have a conversation. But I'm not going downstairs to reassure people who haven't explained what happened.""

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

"Yes, Mom.""

I heard him take a breath.

"Vanessa says she made a mistake.""

"Then she can tell me what the mistake was.""

He went quiet.

"I'll ask her.""

We ended the call.

Ten minutes later, there was a knock at my door.

When I opened it, Vanessa stood in the hallway.

She was wearing a pale gold dress and carrying a small evening bag.

Her smile was strained.

"Can I come in?""

I stepped aside.

She entered the sitting room and glanced around.

For a moment, her eyes lingered on the terrace, the separate dining area, and the enormous windows overlooking the ocean.

I wondered whether she was seeing the suite differently now that she understood who had reserved it.

"Your room is beautiful," she said.

"Thank you.""

She turned toward me.

"I owe you an apology.""

I waited.

She shifted her handbag from one hand to the other.

"I shouldn't have given your suite to my friends without asking.""

"That's true.""

"And I shouldn't have told the resort that you agreed to the change.""

"That's also true.""

She seemed disappointed that I wasn't rushing to comfort her.

"I was trying to make everyone happy," she continued.

"My friends have been talking about this vacation for weeks. I wanted them to feel special.""

"Why did you arrange a dinner under my name?""

Her expression changed.

Only briefly.

But I saw it.

"What dinner?""

I looked at her.

"The private dinner scheduled for tonight. The one involving eight guests, printed announcement packets, and a family transition.""

Vanessa went completely still.

For a moment, the carefully arranged expression on her face disappeared.

Then she laughed.

"Oh, that.""

I didn't join her.

She sat on the edge of the sofa.

"It was supposed to be a surprise.""

"For whom?""

"For everyone.""

"What's the announcement?""

She looked at me.

"I can't tell you yet.""

I stared at her in disbelief.

"You want me to approve an expensive dinner in my name, but you won't tell me what the dinner is for?""

"It's a family matter.""

"Then you should have discussed it with the family before making arrangements.""

She sighed.

"Margaret, you're making this much harder than it needs to be.""

I felt my patience thinning.

"Vanessa, you came to my room to apologize. I'm listening. But if you're only here because you want me to approve something you arranged without my consent, this conversation is going nowhere.""

She rose from the sofa.

"I knew you'd react like this.""

"Like what?""

"Like everything has to be your decision.""

I looked at her carefully.

"Anything arranged in my name does have to be my decision.""

She turned away.

For several seconds, she stood beside the window.

Then she spoke without looking at me.

"You know, Daniel has been under a lot of pressure.""

I frowned.

"What does that have to do with the dinner?""

"He's tired of feeling as though he has to ask for help.""

"I haven't asked him to ask me for anything.""

"That's not how he feels.""

I waited for her to continue.

"He wants to build something of his own," she said.

"He wants to know that he can take care of his future without depending on you.""

The statement surprised me.

Daniel had never told me he felt that way.

I had always believed that the support I offered him came without conditions.

If he didn't need my help, I was perfectly happy to step aside.

"Then why don't you encourage him to do that?"" I asked.

"I do.""

"Good.""

"But he needs an opportunity.""

I felt a chill move through me.

"What kind of opportunity?""

Vanessa turned around.

Her smile had returned, but there was something calculated about it.

"That's what the dinner is about.""

I stood.

"Tell me now.""

She shook her head.

"I can't. Not until everyone is there.""

"Then there won't be a dinner.""

Her face hardened.

"You can't cancel it!""

"I haven't approved it.""

"But the arrangements have already been made!""

"By you.""

She stepped toward me.

"Margaret, this is important to Daniel.""

The mention of my son made me pause.

"What have you arranged?""

She pressed her lips together.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell me the truth.

Instead, she reached into her handbag and removed a cream-colored envelope.

"I was going to give you this tonight.""

She placed it on the table.

I didn't touch it.

"What is it?""

"An explanation.""

"Of what?""

"Everything that's going to change.""

She looked at me, and I suddenly recognized the expression in her eyes.

It wasn't embarrassment.

It wasn't remorse.

It was anticipation.

Vanessa had not come to apologize because she regretted what she had done.

She had come because she wanted me to cooperate with something she had already set in motion.

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was a printed document bearing Daniel's name.

Beneath it was a second name.

Mine.

And beneath both names was a heading that made my heart beat faster.

*Proposed Family Asset Transition.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My hands went cold.

The document referred to a proposed transfer of certain hospitality-related assets into a new management structure.

It discussed future oversight, financial participation, and the possibility of granting Daniel expanded control over selected properties.

Some of the language was vague.

Some of it sounded suspiciously familiar.

But one sentence stood out.

The proposed transition would require my cooperation as the current controlling owner.

I looked up.

"Vanessa, where did you get this?""

She swallowed.

"It was prepared for the dinner.""

"By whom?""

"I don't know all the details.""

"Then why is my name on it?""

"Because you're the owner.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

She folded her arms.

"You always say you want Daniel to succeed. This is an opportunity for him to take on more responsibility.""

"Did Daniel ask you to arrange this?""

Her silence lasted a second too long.

I set the document on the table.

"Did he?""

"He knows we need to talk about the future.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

She looked toward the door.

I stepped closer.

"Vanessa, did my son authorize you to prepare a proposal involving my assets?""

She lifted her chin.

"I was trying to help him.""

"That's not an answer.""

Her eyes flashed.

"Why does it matter who prepared it? The important thing is that Daniel deserves a chance to prove himself.""

I stared at her.

For the first time, the room change seemed almost insignificant.

She had attempted to move me out of my suite.

She had arranged an expensive dinner under my name.

And now she was presenting me with a document that appeared to contemplate changes to assets I controlled.

I thought of Eleanor's message.

The family announcement.

The printed packets.

The mysterious contact number.

Suddenly, the pieces seemed connected.

Vanessa wasn't merely trying to impress her friends.

She was preparing to present a proposal in front of our family, perhaps hoping the setting would make it difficult for me to refuse.

She had created an occasion where I would be expected to smile, congratulate Daniel, and cooperate.

If I objected, I would appear to be the mother who couldn't let her son grow up.

If I agreed without scrutiny, I might be accepting something I hadn't fully understood.

Either way, she had planned to control the conversation.

I looked at her.

"Does Daniel know what this document says?""

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

"He knows enough.""

My chest tightened.

"That isn't good enough.""

She snatched her handbag from the sofa.

"You always do this. You turn everything into a test.""

"No, Vanessa. I'm asking you to tell me whether my son knows you've prepared a proposal involving my assets.""

She moved toward the door.

"You'll find out at dinner.""

"There won't be a dinner.""

She spun around.

"You can't do this to him!""

I held her gaze.

"If Daniel wants to discuss a business opportunity, he can come to me directly, with a proposal that has been prepared properly and reviewed honestly.""

She looked as though she wanted to scream.

Instead, she forced a brittle smile.

"Fine. We'll see what Daniel thinks about that.""

She opened the door and left.

I remained beside the table, staring at the document.

My phone was already in my hand when I called Richard.

He answered immediately.

"Mrs. Whitmore?""

"I need you to preserve every record related to tonight's event, including the documents requested by the organizer.""

"Certainly.""

"And I need you to verify whether anyone has attempted to access my business information through the resort.""

There was a pause.

"May I ask what prompted that request?""

I looked down at the proposed asset transition.

"Because someone has arranged a family announcement involving my properties without my permission.""

Richard's tone became serious.

"I understand. I'll handle it discreetly.""

After we ended the call, I sat down and read the document again.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

"Mom?""

"Yes.""

"Vanessa told me you canceled the dinner.""

"I declined to approve it.""

He sounded frustrated.

"Why?""

"Because I was given a document proposing changes to my assets, and I still don't know who prepared it or what you were told.""

Silence.

Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.

"What document?""

I closed my eyes.

"Daniel, your name is on it.""

"I haven't seen any document.""

I stared at the paper on the table.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the only question that mattered.

"Son, did you know your wife was planning to make an announcement about my properties tonight?""

"No, Mom," he said immediately.

"I swear I didn't.""

I believed him.

And that was when I understood that the most dangerous part of this situation might not be what Vanessa had done to me.

It might be what she had done behind her own husband's back.

May you like

Because if Daniel truly knew nothing about the proposal bearing his name, then someone had been preparing to speak for both of us.

And I intended to find out exactly who.
