Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Hid to Protect Me

The file name stared back at me.

*“Ethan Bennett: The Truth He Never Told Ava.””*

For several seconds, I forgot where I was.

The garden.

The officers.

The crowd.

The accusations.

Everything disappeared.

Because the one person I trusted more than anyone had apparently been hiding something from me.

My father.

The man who had always told me honesty mattered.

The man who had taught me never to run from the truth.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I couldn’t open it.

Not yet.

Because some part of me was afraid.

Not of what Richard Whitmore had done.

Not of what the investigation would uncover.

I was afraid of discovering that my father had been part of the lie all along.

“Ava?””

My father’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

He had noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I locked the screen.

“Nothing.””

He immediately knew I was lying.

My father always knew.

“What did you see?””

I hesitated.

The officer standing nearby looked between us.

“Ms. Bennett, we can wait a moment.””

I barely heard him.

I looked at my father.

“Why is there a file with your name on it?””

His face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough for me to know.

He knew.

My heart sank.

“You knew about it.””

My father looked away.

That hurt more than any accusation Richard had thrown at me.

“Dad.””

He took a slow breath.

“I was hoping you would never find that.””

The words felt like a punch.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because it’s about the hardest decision I ever made.””

I stared at him.

“Then tell me.””

His eyes moved toward the officers.

Then toward Richard.

Richard was watching us.

Waiting.

My father lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“I’m tired of people telling me things aren’t the right time.””

My father went quiet.

“My whole life, everyone has protected me from something.””

I held up the letter.

“Mom left a warning.””

I pointed toward Richard.

“He knew.””

Then I touched my smartwatch.

“And now there’s a file about you.””

My eyes filled with frustration.

“I deserve the truth.””

My father looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

“You do.””

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Bennett?””

My father turned.

“Give us five minutes.””

The officer agreed.

But everyone stayed.

Even Richard.

Because everyone wanted to hear what my father was about to say.

My father looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t just investigate the Whitmore Foundation.””

I waited.

“She investigated Bennett Holdings too.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Because she thought you were involved?””

“No.””

His answer came immediately.

Too quickly.

“No.””

He looked almost offended by the idea.

“She believed someone inside my company was using my name to hide what they were doing.””

I remembered the note.

*The person closest to you is the person who knows how to hurt you the most.*

“Who?””

My father looked down.

“That’s what I spent years trying to find out.””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Interesting.””

Everyone looked at him.

He smiled.

“You’re finally admitting you knew there was corruption.””

My father ignored him.

“I discovered missing money after your mother died.””

I froze.

“After?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His face softened.

“Because you were two years old.””

I looked away.

Of course.

But there was more.

I could feel it.

“There’s another reason.””

My father nodded.

“There is.””

He looked at the ground.

“The night your mother died…”

The entire garden became still.

“I found out she had hidden evidence.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of evidence?””

“Records.””

“About Richard?””

“About everyone.””

My father swallowed.

“She didn’t know who was involved.””

Richard’s expression changed.

My father continued.

“She was planning to meet someone that night.””

“Who?””

“I never found out.””

“Then how did she die?””

My father looked at me.

And I saw the pain he had carried for twenty years.

“The official report said it was an accident.””

I waited.

“But I never believed it.””

The words felt heavier than I expected.

“Why?””

“Because before she left the house, she told me something.””

My voice became quiet.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t trust the person who benefits from my silence.’”

I looked toward Richard.

He immediately shook his head.

“This is absurd.””

But his voice was weaker now.

My father continued.

“I wanted to investigate.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I received a threat.””

Nobody spoke.

“What kind of threat?””

My father looked at Richard.

“A warning.””

Richard’s face hardened.

My father continued.

“It said if I kept digging, I would lose everything.””

I whispered:

“And you stopped?””

His silence answered.

I felt hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“You stopped?””

He nodded.

“Because I had you.””

The words broke something inside me.

“I was protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“You were hiding from the truth.””

His face fell.

“Yes.””

He didn’t defend himself.

That somehow made it worse.

“Yes, I was.””

A long silence followed.

Then the officer cleared his throat.

“Ms. Bennett, we really need to proceed.””

I nodded.

But before I could move, my father grabbed my arm gently.

“Ava.””

I looked at him.

“I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“I never doubted you.””

My eyes burned.

“Tonight?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Not once.””

I looked down.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I wanted you to have a normal life.””

I almost laughed.

“Normal?””

I gestured around.

“A man tried to destroy me at a charity gala.””

My father looked toward Richard.

“You’re right.””

Then he whispered:

“I failed you.””

That was the one thing I never expected to hear.

My father admitting he had failed.

Before I could answer, Madison stepped forward.

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

“I need to tell you something.””

Richard immediately snapped.

“Madison.””

She ignored him.

Her hands were shaking.

“I know who gave you the files.””

The garden went silent.

My father looked at her.

“Who?””

Madison looked terrified.

Not because of us.

Because of her father.

“I wasn’t supposed to know.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Stop talking.””

Madison looked at him.

“You told me nobody would find out.””

Everyone froze.

My father stared.

“Find out what?””

Madison looked at me.

“The person who gave Ava the documents…”

She swallowed.

“Was someone inside the Whitmore family.””

Richard’s face went cold.

But Madison wasn’t finished.

“It was my brother.””

The name hit everyone differently.

Richard looked furious.

My father looked shocked.

And I felt confused.

“Your brother?””

Madison nodded.

“He disappeared three years ago.””

Richard’s voice became dangerous.

“Madison.””

She looked at him.

“He disappeared because he found out what you were doing.””

Nobody moved.

Then my father asked:

“Where is he now?””

Madison looked down.

“I don’t know.””

A pause.

“But I know someone who does.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Who?””

Madison looked directly at Richard.

Then she said:

“The same person who has been helping my father cover everything.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

Madison opened her mouth.

But before she could answer…

A gunshot echoed from somewhere beyond the trees.

Everyone dropped.

The lights on the terrace flickered.

People screamed in the distance.

Security immediately surrounded us.

My father grabbed me and pulled me behind him.

Then another sound came.

A phone notification.

Not mine.

Madison’s.

She looked down.

Her face turned completely white.

“What?””

My father looked at her.

“What does it say?””

Madison slowly lifted the phone.

The message was only four words.

May you like

Four words that made Richard Whitmore take a step back.

*“Your brother is alive.””*
