Chapter 6: The Sister Who Wanted My Son
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
Not because I didn’t understand Michael’s words.
Because I did.
And that made them worse.
My wife helped her sister.
The same wife who watched my son stand hungry in our kitchen.
The same wife who told me she was protecting him.
The same wife who looked me in the eyes for years and let me believe we were a normal family.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Emily was staring at me.
She already knew.
“What did he say?”” she asked.
I didn’t answer immediately.
I wanted her to tell me.
I wanted her to look me in the eye and finally choose honesty without being forced.
But she didn’t.
She just waited.
And that silence told me everything.
“Your sister,” I said.
Her face changed.
“Daniel…”
“Your sister tried to take Ethan away from me.””
Emily closed her eyes.
A small movement.
But enough.
“You knew.””
She looked down.
“I knew she wanted custody.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Not because they were surprising.
Because they confirmed my worst fear.
“You knew.””
“I didn’t know she would actually file.””
“But you knew.””
Emily looked at me.
“I was trying to stop her.””
I stared.
“By helping her?””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Again.
Always silence.
Always after the truth became impossible to hide.
Mark stepped forward.
“Who is her sister?””
I looked at him.
“You don’t know?””
He shook his head.
“I haven’t been involved in Emily’s family for years.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently, none of us know anything.””
Emily sat down.
She looked exhausted.
“Her name is Claire.””
I waited.
“And Claire believed Ethan belonged with her.””
“Why?””
Emily looked at the floor.
“Because she was there when everything happened.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
She swallowed.
“Claire helped me after Rachel died.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She was the one who convinced me to become Ethan’s guardian.””
I looked at her.
“And now she wants him?””
Emily nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The answer came quietly.
“She thinks I stole him.””
I stared.
“What?””
Emily wiped her face.
“She always believed Ethan should have gone to Mark’s family.””
Mark frowned.
“But I didn’t have custody.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Emily looked at him.
“Because Claire blamed me for keeping him away from everyone.””
I walked toward the table.
The pieces were finally connecting.
“But why would she file against me?””
Emily looked at the documents.
“Because you were the biggest obstacle.””
The sentence made my blood run cold.
“The biggest obstacle?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Daniel, you became Ethan’s father.””
I didn’t respond.
“You were the person he trusted most.””
I looked away.
Because that part hurt.
Not because I doubted it.
Because I knew it was true.
“And Claire knew that.””
I stared at her.
“So she decided to remove me.””
Emily nodded.
“She thought if you weren’t there, Ethan would return to the people connected to his biological family.””
Mark shook his head.
“She barely knew him.””
Emily looked at him.
“That didn’t matter to her.””
I picked up my phone again.
Michael’s words replayed in my head.
There’s evidence your wife helped her.
I looked at Emily.
“What evidence?””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“Michael said there was evidence you helped Claire.””
She immediately stood.
“No.””
The speed of her answer told me something.
“Daniel, that’s not what happened.””
“Then what happened?””
“I talked to Claire.””
“When?””
“Months ago.””
“About what?””
Emily hesitated.
I stepped closer.
“About what?””
She looked away.
“About Ethan.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What did you tell her?””
“Things about his condition.””
I stared.
“You gave her Ethan’s medical information?””
“I was trying to understand what she wanted.””
“Without telling me?””
“I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“You keep using that word.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice became quieter.
“You were scared of consequences.””
Emily looked hurt.
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
I pointed upstairs.
“My son spent years feeling like he didn’t belong because adults were too scared to tell the truth.””
She looked down.
That landed.
I knew it did.
“Did you give Claire anything else?””
“No.””
“Documents?””
“No.””
“Records?””
“No.””
“Messages?””
Her silence returned.
I closed my eyes.
“Emily.””
She whispered:
“I sent her one message.””
“What message?””
“She asked if you knew about Ethan’s history.””
“And?””
“I told her you didn’t.””
The room went silent.
I stared at her.
“You told her I didn’t know.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“You don’t know?””
“I was overwhelmed.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made a choice.””
She started crying.
“I was afraid of losing him.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it was true!””
Her voice suddenly rose.
For a moment, the old Emily appeared.
The defensive one.
The one who always had a reason.
“I spent years raising him. I was the one there when Rachel died. I was the one who stayed awake when he was sick. I was the one who held him when he cried.””
I listened.
Because some of it was true.
Emily had been there.
She had loved Ethan.
But love wasn’t enough.
Not when it came with secrets.
“You were there,” I said.
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“But so was I.””
Her expression broke.
“Yes.””
“And you still made me feel like I wasn’t his father.””
“I never meant to.””
“But you did.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Mark quietly said:
“She’s right about one thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“You are his father.””
The words surprised me coming from him.
Mark looked toward the stairs.
“Biology doesn’t erase twelve years.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I wasn’t sure what I felt toward him.
Anger.
Resentment.
Maybe even a little understanding.
He had failed Ethan once.
Emily had failed Ethan differently.
And somehow, I was the person standing in the middle trying to protect him.
My phone buzzed again.
Michael.
This time, I answered immediately.
“What did you find?””
His voice was urgent.
“Daniel, I need you to listen carefully.””
“I’m listening.””
“I pulled the original filing records.””
“And?””
“The custody challenge wasn’t started recently.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“It was prepared almost a year ago.””
I looked at Emily.
She froze.
“A year?””
“Yes.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who signed the first draft?””
Michael paused.
Then said:
“Your wife.””
I felt like the floor moved beneath me.
Emily immediately shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You signed it?””
“No, Daniel.””
“Michael says you did.””
“I signed something, but not that.””
“Then what did you sign?””
She looked terrified.
“I thought it was only a consultation agreement.””
I stared.
“A consultation agreement with who?””
Her face went pale.
“With Claire.””
The room went silent.
Then Michael spoke again.
“Daniel, there’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
“The reason Claire wanted custody wasn’t because of Ethan’s medical history.””
I waited.
“Then why?””
His answer came slowly.
“She claimed you were not Ethan’s legal father.””
My jaw tightened.
“But that’s not true.””
“I know.””
“Then why would she claim it?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because someone gave her evidence.””
I looked at Emily.
“Who?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“Daniel…”
“Who gave her evidence?””
The answer came.
And this time, it wasn’t just a secret.
It was a betrayal.
“Your wife gave her Ethan’s original birth records.””
I stared at Emily.
She covered her mouth.
“No…”
But it was too late.
Because the truth was already standing in the room with us.
May you like
And then Mark looked at Emily with disbelief and whispered:
“You gave them the one document that could take him away.””
