Chapter 8: The Memory They Buried
The name on the message followed me.
Even after the guard left.
Even after the alarms stopped.
Even after the prison returned to its usual cold silence.
*Ethan Cole.*
My own name.
Written by someone who claimed to be me.
I sat in the interview room staring at the file.
The pages felt heavier now.
Not because of what they contained.
Because of what they suggested.
There was a version of my life I didn't remember.
A version where I wasn't just a child who lost his mother.
A version where I was somehow connected to the same secrets that destroyed my family.
Lucas stood across from me.
For the first time since I met him, he didn't look angry.
He looked worried.
"You need to remember.""
I looked up.
"Stop saying that.""
His expression didn't change.
"Why?""
"Because everyone keeps telling me I forgot something.""
I tapped the file.
"My father.""
"My uncle.""
"The warden.""
"Now you.""
I pushed the papers away.
"Maybe I didn't forget anything.""
Lucas was quiet.
Then he said:
"Maybe that's what they wanted you to believe.""
The room went silent.
Tank sat in the corner, watching both of us.
I looked at him.
"You knew about this?""
He shook his head.
"Not everything.""
"But something.""
Tank looked down.
"I knew your father was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
He looked at Lucas.
"From remembering.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
I stood.
"What happened at that hospital?""
Nobody answered.
That silence was becoming unbearable.
I slammed my hand on the table.
"What happened?""
Lucas finally spoke.
"You were there.""
"I know.""
"You saw your mother.""
"I know.""
"No.""
Lucas leaned forward.
"You saw who came into the room after she died.""
I froze.
A strange feeling moved through me.
Not a memory.
Not yet.
Something underneath.
A door in my mind that had been locked for years.
I closed my eyes.
A hospital hallway.
White walls.
The smell of medicine.
A man's voice.
Someone crying.
I opened my eyes quickly.
"I don't remember.""
Lucas nodded.
"That's because they erased the worst part.""
I looked at him.
"Who?""
Lucas didn't answer.
Tank did.
"Your uncle.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Tank looked at me.
"I know you don't want to believe it.""
"Because he raised me.""
"I know.""
"He was there.""
"That's why it worked.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because they made sense.
The person closest to you was the person you trusted most.
I looked at the file again.
"How do I remember?""
Lucas reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small object.
A broken watch.
I recognized it immediately.
My breath stopped.
I knew that watch.
My father's watch.
I had seen it in old family photos.
But this one was damaged.
The glass was cracked.
A dark stain covered the strap.
"He left this for you.""
I took it slowly.
"Where did you get this?""
"From the hospital.""
I looked at him.
"You were there?""
Lucas nodded.
"I followed him.""
"Who?""
"Your uncle.""
The room became silent.
Lucas looked at the watch.
"I was five years old. I didn't understand everything.""
He paused.
"But I understood one thing.""
"What?""
"He wasn't there to help.""
I turned the watch over.
There was something scratched on the back.
A message.
Small.
Almost impossible to see.
But I recognized the handwriting.
My father's.
*Remember the red door.*
I looked up.
"The red door.""
Lucas nodded.
"That's where it happened.""
"Where?""
"The hospital basement.""
A chill moved through me.
"Why would my father write that?""
"Because he knew you would forget.""
I stared at him.
"I was six.""
Lucas stepped closer.
"Exactly.""
I closed my eyes.
And then something happened.
A memory.
Not clear.
Not complete.
But real.
A red door.
A hallway underground.
My small hand holding my mother's.
A man's voice.
"Where is the file?""
My mother's voice.
"You'll never find it.""
Then another voice.
My uncle.
"David, please.""
I opened my eyes.
My heart was racing.
"I heard him.""
Everyone looked at me.
I whispered:
"I heard David.""
Lucas nodded.
"What else?""
I grabbed my head.
Another flash.
My mother pushing me behind her.
A loud crash.
My father shouting.
A child crying.
Me.
Or someone else.
I looked at Lucas.
"Where were you?""
His expression changed.
"I was there.""
"No.""
"I was.""
I stared.
"You were the crying child.""
Lucas nodded.
"The one you forgot.""
The room went silent.
The pieces started connecting.
My brother.
The hospital.
My uncle.
The red door.
But something still didn't make sense.
I looked at Lucas.
"If you were there...""
"Yes.""
"Why did I forget you?""
Lucas looked away.
"Because I was the first thing they took from you.""
I didn't understand.
Then he explained.
"After my father disappeared, your uncle made a choice.""
My hands tightened.
"What choice?""
"He separated us.""
"Why?""
"Because together, we were dangerous.""
I felt sick.
"You mean we knew too much.""
Lucas nodded.
"You and I both saw what happened.""
Tank looked at me.
"Your memories weren't erased because you were weak.""
He paused.
"They were erased because you were evidence.""
The word hit me.
Evidence.
I wasn't a victim.
I was proof.
The door suddenly opened.
A guard stepped inside.
Not Martinez.
A younger officer.
His face was tense.
"Cole.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"You have a visitor.""
I frowned.
"I didn't request one.""
The guard looked uncomfortable.
"He requested you.""
"Who?""
The guard glanced behind him.
Then answered:
"David Cole.""
The room froze.
My uncle.
The man who raised me.
The man who might have killed my mother.
The man who had been hiding the truth for fifteen years.
I stood.
Lucas immediately grabbed my arm.
"Don't go alone.""
The guard stepped forward.
"He said he has proof.""
Tank stood.
"He's lying.""
The guard looked at him.
"Maybe.""
Then he looked at me.
"But he brought something.""
"What?""
The guard swallowed.
"A recording.""
I stared.
"Of what?""
The guard's voice lowered.
"The night your mother died.""
Nobody moved.
Lucas released my arm.
Slowly.
Because he knew.
This was the moment everything changed.
I walked toward the door.
Before leaving, Lucas spoke.
"Ethan.""
I turned.
His expression was different.
Not angry.
Not bitter.
Just honest.
"If he shows you the recording...""
I waited.
"Listen to the whole thing.""
"Why?""
Lucas looked at me.
"Because the person who killed your mother wasn't the only person who betrayed you that night.""
I frowned.
"What are you saying?""
Lucas looked toward the hallway.
Then whispered:
"Your father made a choice too.""
The guard opened the door.
I stepped out.
May you like
And for the first time in fifteen years...
I was about to hear my mother's last words.
