Chapter 22

Nora came home with us under federal protection.

Home.

The word felt strange when applied to a sister I had just met.

But when Hope saw her at the secure house, she tilted her head and said, “You look like Mommy.”

Nora froze.

I knelt beside Hope.

“This is Nora. She is my sister.”

Hope’s eyes widened.

“I have an aunt?”

Nora covered her mouth.

Hope stepped closer.

“Are you a good aunt or a weird aunt?”

Jake choked.

I closed my eyes.

Nora laughed through tears.

“I hope good. Maybe a little weird.”

Hope nodded.

“That’s okay. Uncle Robert is weird.”

Uncle Robert, standing behind her, said, “Excuse me.”

Hope ignored him and handed Nora a stuffed bunny.

“This is for nervous guests.”

Nora took it like it was priceless.

“Thank you.”

That small moment did what no court file could.

It made Nora real inside our family.

But danger followed close behind.

Adrian Finch was now the target.

The last Finch root.

The man hidden under everyone else’s crimes.

Agent Morales built the case from old financial records, Sarah’s hired gun, Dr. Mercer’s statement, Nora’s kidnapping, and the bloodline trust documents.

Adrian’s lawyers denied everything.

They claimed Nora was unstable.

Of course.

They claimed I was using my foundation to persecute the Finch family.

Of course.

They claimed Hope was being exploited for sympathy.

That nearly made Jake lose control.

He left the room before speaking.

Progress.

Vivian moved fast to legally seal Hope’s records even tighter.

Jake completed a second parent adoption confirmation, even though his name was already secure.

We closed every loophole.

Every possible claim.

Every shadow Bennett or Adrian could reach through.

Nora helped.

She knew how to think like someone hunted.

I hated that.

I needed it.

Dr. Mercer survived and gave testimony.

I still did not forgive her.

But her testimony mattered.

She admitted she had hidden Nora’s existence.

She admitted she mishandled my therapy records.

She admitted fear made her disobey both ethics and law.

Her license was suspended pending review.

She accepted it.

No excuses.

That mattered more than tears.

Then Adrian made his move.

Not with guns.

Not yet.

With court papers.

He filed a sealed petition claiming Hope had inherited Finch assets through Bennett and therefore required an independent financial guardian.

The claim was absurd.

Legally weak.

Morally disgusting.

But it forced a hearing.

And hearings create headlines.

FINCH FAMILY SEEKS REVIEW OF HALLOWAY CHILD TRUST.

I wanted to scream.

Hope saw the headline on a tablet before we could hide it.

She was eight.

Old enough to read.

Too young to understand.

She came into my office holding the screen.

“Mommy, why is my name in the news?”

My heart cracked.

I took the tablet and set it aside.

“Because a bad adult is trying to use papers to bother our family.”

“Did I do something?”

“No.”

“Is it because of Bennett?”

I froze.

We had told Hope pieces.

Not all.

Not this.

Jake stood in the doorway.

His face was pale.

I pulled Hope into my lap.

“There are people from Bennett’s family who think they can use old money and old lies to reach us.”

“Why?”

“Because they want control.”

Hope frowned.

“Like villains?”

“Like cowards,” Jake said softly.

Hope looked at him.

“You’re my dad.”

Jake’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Can papers change that?”

“No,” he said. “Never.”

She nodded.

“Then I don’t like their papers.”

Neither did we.

At the hearing, Vivian destroyed Adrian’s petition in under twenty minutes.

The judge sanctioned his attorneys for bad-faith filing.

But the real victory came after.

Agent Morales arrested Adrian in the courthouse parking garage.

Nora stood beside me when it happened.

Adrian was older than I expected.

Thin.

Elegant.

Cold.

He looked at Nora first.

“Naomi,” he said.

She went rigid.

I stepped forward.

“Her name is Nora.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“Names are legal inventions.”

May you like

“No,” I said. “Names are choices. And your family doesn’t get to choose anymore.”

For the first time, his smile faded.
