Chapter 4: The Truth Buried Under Snow
Nathan had faced hostile investors.
He had walked into courtrooms where millions of dollars were at stake.
He had fired executives who betrayed his company.
But nothing prepared him for the feeling of standing in his own home and realizing he might not know the people living inside it.
The video kept replaying in his mind.
Vanessa opening Claire’s locked bedroom.
A man walking out.
Daniel Whitmore.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
“Tell me everything.””
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Cold.
Vanessa wiped a tear from her cheek.
“I can explain.””
“You’ve said that three times tonight.””
“Nathan—”
“No.””
He raised the phone.
“Seven years ago, you told me Daniel Whitmore died.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
“And now I watched him walk out of my dead wife’s bedroom.””
Her silence was the answer.
Nathan stepped back.
For the first time in their marriage, he felt afraid of her.
Not because she could hurt him.
Because he realized how long she had been hiding things.
“How long has he been here?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“How long?””
“Three months.””
Nathan stared.
Three months.
Three months while he was in New York.
Three months while his daughters slept down the hallway.
Three months while he sent money and believed everything was fine.
“Does he live here?””
Vanessa’s eyes moved away.
That was enough.
Nathan looked toward the staircase.
The idea made his stomach turn.
A stranger had been inside his home.
Near his children.
“You let a man who was supposed to be dead live in my house?””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“It’s not what you think.””
Nathan gave a humorless laugh.
“Nothing tonight is what I thought.””
A small sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Both of them froze.
Nathan immediately looked up.
“Girls?””
No answer.
He moved toward the stairs.
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
Nathan looked down at her hand.
Slowly, she let go.
“Why?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because if Daniel knows you found out…”
She stopped.
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“He won’t stop.””
The hallway seemed to become colder.
“Are you threatening me?””
“No.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Vanessa looked genuinely scared.
“He is dangerous.””
Nathan stared at her.
“You brought him here.””
“I had no choice.””
Those words changed everything.
Nathan studied her face.
For the first time, he wondered if Vanessa had been the person controlling the situation…
or another person trapped inside it.
But then he remembered the bread.
The locked door.
The abandoned children.
Fear did not erase responsibility.
“Where is he now?””
“I don’t know.””
Nathan looked at the video again.
The footage showed Daniel entering Claire’s room.
Not leaving.
“Then we find out.””
He turned away.
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve again.
“Nathan, listen to me.””
He stopped.
“Claire knew.””
The sentence froze him.
“What?””
“Before she died, she found out about Daniel.””
Nathan slowly turned.
“What did she find out?””
Vanessa looked toward the fireplace.
“Daniel wasn’t dead.””
The words felt impossible.
Nathan stared.
“Then why did everyone believe he was?””
“Because that was what he wanted.””
“Why?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because he was running from people.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
Nathan’s eyes hardened.
“You know more than you’re telling me.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“I know he came to me because Claire discovered something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“She found documents.””
Nathan went still.
“What documents?””
“I don’t know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I swear.””
She looked up.
“I only knew Claire was scared.””
Nathan remembered the notebook.
Someone in this house has been hiding things from you.
His heart tightened.
“What happened the night Claire died?””
Vanessa went silent.
The silence lasted too long.
Nathan stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Vanessa whispered:
“It wasn’t an accident.””
The words barely existed.
But Nathan heard them.
His entire body went numb.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I said it wasn’t an accident.””
The room seemed to tilt.
For seven years, Nathan had lived with one painful truth.
Claire lost control of her car on an icy road.
A tragic accident.
A moment of bad luck.
A phone call that destroyed his world.
But now…
“Who told you that?””
Vanessa looked confused.
“What?””
“Who told you it was an accident?””
“I—”
“You knew.””
Nathan’s voice rose.
“You knew before I did.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“Nathan…”
“You knew something about my wife’s death.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“By lying?””
“I was trying to survive.””
That sentence stopped him.
Not because he believed her.
Because it revealed something.
Vanessa wasn’t acting like someone hiding a mistake.
She was acting like someone hiding from something.
A sound came from the hallway.
A floorboard creaked.
Nathan turned instantly.
“Who’s there?””
Nothing.
He walked toward the dark corridor.
“Come out.””
No answer.
He opened the door to the family room.
Empty.
But on the floor was something new.
A photograph.
Nathan picked it up.
His hands went cold.
It was a picture of Claire.
Taken the week before she died.
She was standing outside the Caldwell mansion.
But she wasn’t alone.
Beside her stood Daniel Whitmore.
And another person.
Someone Nathan recognized immediately.
Someone he had trusted for years.
His father-in-law.
Claire’s father.
Robert Hayes.
Nathan stared at the photo.
Impossible.
Robert had died two years before Claire.
A heart attack.
Everyone knew.
Everyone had attended the funeral.
But there was something written on the back.
A message.
Three words.
*Ask your father.*
Nathan’s breathing changed.
His father.
The one person he had avoided thinking about.
The man who disappeared from his life when Nathan was twenty.
The man who had left him nothing but unanswered questions.
His phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Nathan answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only static.
Then a voice.
Older.
Rough.
Familiar.
“Nathan.””
He froze.
No.
It couldn’t be.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then the voice said:
“You found Claire’s box.””
Nathan looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone pale.
Because she knew that voice too.
The man continued.
“I was hoping you never would.””
Nathan’s heart pounded.
“Who are you?””
The answer came quietly.
“I’m the reason your wife died.””
Nathan couldn’t move.
The voice continued.
“And I’m the reason your daughters are still alive.””
The call ended.
Nathan stared at the blank screen.
Then he looked toward the staircase.
His daughters.
His four little girls.
The only innocent people in this nightmare.
A thought suddenly hit him.
A terrifying one.
If someone had been watching the house…
If someone had hidden cameras…
If someone had been inside Claire’s room…
Then they knew.
They knew Nathan had come home.
And they knew he had found the truth.
A sharp sound echoed from upstairs.
A scream.
Nathan ran.
He reached the girls’ bedroom door and threw it open.
Emma, Lily, Sophie, and Grace were huddled together in the corner.
Terrified.
Nathan rushed toward them.
“What happened?””
Emma pointed toward the window.
Her face was pale.
“Daddy…”
Nathan looked.
A footprint marked the snow outside.
Someone had been standing there.
Watching them.
And on the glass, written with a finger from the outside…
May you like
were four words.
*I FOUND YOU, GIRLS.*
