Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Sophie’s Father
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The airport moved around me, but I stood completely still.
People rushed past with coffee cups and suitcases. Children laughed near the security gates. A voice echoed from the speakers announcing a delayed flight.
But all I heard was Ethan’s sentence.
“Your daughter’s father is the reason I was on that flight.””
I stared at him.
Then I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because my brain refused to accept it.
“What?””
Ethan didn’t look away.
“Rachel—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
My fingers tightened around Sophie’s blanket.
“No, you don’t get to say something like that and just stand there like it makes sense.””
The man beside Ethan lowered his eyes.
He looked uncomfortable.
Good.
At least someone understood how insane this sounded.
I looked between them.
“Who are you people?””
Ethan took a step closer.
I immediately stepped back.
The movement was small.
But he noticed.
And he stopped.
That told me more about him than anything else.
He could have demanded answers.
He could have acted offended.
Instead, he respected the distance.
“My name is Ethan Callahan,” he said quietly.
“I know.””
“My company has been investigating a financial network connected to several people in Chicago.””
I stared at him.
“Okay.””
“I’m not sure how much you know about Sophie’s father.””
The cold air of the terminal seemed to disappear.
Because there were some names you could avoid.
Some memories you could bury.
But there was one person I had spent six months trying not to think about.
Daniel.
I swallowed.
“I know enough.””
Ethan studied my face.
“Do you?””
The question irritated me.
“No offense, but you don’t know anything about me.””
His expression hardened slightly.
“You’re right.””
He looked down.
“That’s why I need to explain.””
The man beside him handed him the tablet.
Ethan looked at the screen for several seconds.
Then he turned it toward me.
I didn’t want to look.
I really didn’t.
But I did.
The first thing I saw was a picture.
Daniel.
My daughter’s father.
The man who had promised me forever.
The man who disappeared two months before Sophie was born.
My stomach twisted.
Under his photo were words.
Daniel Whitmore.
Former executive associate.
Fraud investigation.
Missing.
I looked at Ethan.
“What is this?””
“Information I found after I learned your name.””
“How did you learn my name?””
His silence answered before he did.
“You told me.””
I frowned.
“When?””
“On the plane.””
I thought back.
I had been exhausted.
Overwhelmed.
Talking without thinking.
Had I said something?
Then I remembered.
The bottle.
The diaper bag.
The moment I had whispered Sophie’s name.
Had I mentioned Daniel?
Maybe.
I couldn’t remember.
Ethan continued.
“You said her last name.””
I looked at him.
“So you searched me?””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
Most people would have denied it.
“You searched me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because your name appeared in a file connected to Daniel Whitmore.””
My heart sank.
“What file?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
That was the moment I knew whatever came next would hurt.
“Rachel, before you met Daniel, did you know anything about his business?””
I shook my head.
“He worked in finance.””
“That’s what he told you?””
I felt anger rise.
“Yes.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“And did he ever mention a company called Whitmore Capital?””
“No.””
“Did he ever mention investors? Private accounts? Offshore transfers?””
“No.””
The answers came faster now.
Because every question felt like another piece of a puzzle I didn’t want to solve.
Ethan watched me carefully.
“I believe Daniel used you.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I looked away.
“You don’t know him.””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You weren’t there.””
Ethan went quiet.
I hated that my eyes were burning.
I hated that a stranger in an airport could make me feel like I was back six months ago.
Back in my tiny apartment.
Back when I was eight months pregnant and standing by the window waiting for a car that never came.
Daniel had promised he would return.
He promised he just needed to handle something.
Then his phone stopped working.
His apartment was empty.
His friends claimed they didn’t know where he was.
And I was left alone.
Pregnant.
Broke.
Terrified.
I had spent months wondering if he was dead.
Months wondering if he hated me.
Months wondering if I had done something wrong.
But I never imagined this.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why do you care?””
The question came out quieter.
That seemed to affect him.
His expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
“Because Daniel Whitmore hurt people.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
“And because I think he hurt you too.””
The terminal suddenly felt too big.
Too bright.
I looked down at Sophie.
She was still asleep.
Completely unaware that the adults around her were discussing a man who had abandoned us.
A man she would one day ask about.
A man I had no answer for.
I whispered:
“What does he have to do with you?””
Ethan looked away.
For the first time, I saw anger.
Real anger.
Not loud.
Not explosive.
The kind that had been buried for years.
“Daniel was involved in something that destroyed my family.””
I froze.
“What?””
“My father invested in one of his companies.””
The assistant beside him shifted.
“Mr. Callahan—”
Ethan raised a hand.
“No.””
The man stopped talking.
Ethan looked at me.
“Your daughter’s father wasn’t just some businessman who disappeared.””
A chill ran through me.
“Then what was he?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then he said:
“Someone who knew exactly how to make people trust him.””
I looked at the tablet again.
Daniel’s face stared back at me.
The man who used to cook breakfast for me on Sunday mornings.
The man who rubbed my feet when I was pregnant.
The man who whispered that Sophie would have his eyes.
How could someone I loved be someone dangerous?
I shook my head.
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“No?””
“I don’t believe you.””
“That’s fair.””
“I mean it.””
“I know.””
“You can’t just show me a file and expect me to believe that the father of my child is some kind of criminal.””
His voice softened.
“I’m not asking you to believe everything.””
“Then what are you asking?””
He looked directly at me.
“To be careful.””
I almost laughed again.
“Careful?””
“Yes.””
“Ethan, I’m a waitress who can barely pay rent. I have a six-month-old baby. The only dangerous thing in my life is an overdue electric bill.””
His expression didn’t change.
“That’s exactly why I’m worried.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
The sound cut through the conversation.
I looked down.
Unknown Number.
My heart stopped.
I hadn’t received a call from an unknown number in months.
Slowly, I answered.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only silence.
Then a man’s voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in half a year.
A voice that instantly turned my blood cold.
“Rachel.””
I couldn’t move.
Because I knew that voice.
Daniel.
“Daniel?””
Ethan’s expression changed immediately.
He reached for the phone.
I stepped away.
“Where are you?””
Daniel ignored my question.
His breathing sounded rushed.
“Listen to me carefully.””
My hand shook.
“What’s happening?””
“Is Ethan Callahan with you?””
I looked at Ethan.
He was watching me.
Every muscle in his body tense.
“How do you know him?””
Daniel went silent.
Then his voice dropped.
“Rachel, you need to get away from him.””
My heart pounded.
“What?””
“Do not trust Ethan Callahan.””
I stared at the man who had protected me on the plane.
The man who had held my daughter’s bottle.
The man everyone in Chicago feared.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Because he’s the reason I disappeared.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Ethan looked at me.
“What did he say?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly I had two impossible choices.
Believe the stranger who saved me.
Or believe the man who broke my heart.
Then Ethan’s assistant looked at the phone in my hand.
And his face went pale.
“Rachel.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed at my screen.
The call log was still visible.
But underneath Daniel’s name was something that made my stomach drop.
A timestamp.
The call had lasted exactly six seconds.
Yet Daniel had somehow known where I was.
And he had somehow known Ethan was standing right beside me.
Ethan looked toward the airport exit.
His voice became dangerously calm.
“Someone followed you here.””
I tightened my arms around Sophie.
May you like
And for the first time since meeting him, I wondered if the man beside me was my protector...
or the biggest threat I had ever faced.
