Chapter 10: The Truth That Finally Returned

The man standing in front of us looked like a ghost.

Not because he was frightening.

Because he was impossible.

Luca Moretti stared at him with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not suspicion.

Shock.

"Marco.""

The name left his mouth like a memory he didn't want to remember.

The man smiled sadly.

"Hello, Luca.""

My body went cold.

Marco Moretti.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

The man everyone believed disappeared.

The man who had been controlling the truth from the shadows.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

"You knew.""

It wasn't a question.

Vanessa looked away.

"I suspected.""

"Suspected?""

My voice shook.

"You knew he was alive.""

She swallowed.

"I knew he wasn't the person everyone thought he was.""

Luca stepped forward.

"You have five seconds to explain.""

Marco looked at him.

"Still giving orders.""

"You disappeared.""

"Yes.""

"You let everyone believe you died.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Marco's expression changed.

For the first time, I saw something besides confidence.

Regret.

"Because I had to.""

Luca laughed once.

A cold sound.

"No.""

His voice lowered.

"You wanted to.""

Marco looked at me.

"Not everyone.""

I felt his eyes on me.

And suddenly, the missing pieces started moving.

The archive room.

The documents.

The fear.

The voice telling me I would be safe.

I stepped forward.

"Why do I remember you?""

Everyone looked at me.

Marco's expression softened.

"Because you were the only person who saw the entire truth.""

I shook my head.

"I don't understand.""

"You weren't supposed to be involved.""

I almost laughed.

"Everyone keeps saying that.""

"Because it's true.""

Marco walked closer.

Luca immediately moved between us.

A protective gesture.

Marco noticed.

"She trusts you.""

Luca didn't answer.

"That's interesting.""

"Stop.""

The word came from Luca.

Marco sighed.

"Three years ago, your uncle was stealing from the company.""

Luca's eyes hardened.

"My uncle?""

"Yes.""

"With Victor.""

Marco nodded.

"Victor wasn't the mastermind.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Then who was?""

Marco looked at Luca.

"Someone who knew the company better than anyone.""

The answer was obvious.

But I didn't want to say it.

"Luca's uncle.""

Marco nodded.

"Yes.""

The room became silent.

"But Marco...""

I looked at him.

"You worked with him.""

"At first.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

"What does that mean?""

Marco looked down.

"I didn't know what he was doing.""

Luca's expression remained cold.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"I don't expect anything from you.""

"Then why are you here?""

Marco looked at me.

"Because Natalie deserves the truth.""

Three years earlier.

Marco explained everything.

Not like a confession.

Like someone finally releasing a weight he had carried too long.

Victor had been recruited by Luca's uncle because he was desperate.

He needed money.

He needed someone who could be controlled.

Someone outside the company.

Someone invisible.

That person was me.

My name.

My signature.

My identity.

The perfect person to blame.

But then something went wrong.

I found the file.

The real one.

The evidence proving everything.

And instead of handing it over, I hid it.

I looked at Marco.

"I hid it?""

He nodded.

"You realized what was happening.""

"But I don't remember.""

"I know.""

My voice became quiet.

"What happened to my memory?""

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Marco.""

He looked at her.

She lowered her eyes.

"You need to tell her.""

A long pause.

Then Marco said:

"You were attacked.""

The words barely registered.

"By who?""

Marco looked at Luca.

Then back at me.

"Your uncle.""

I felt the room spin.

"He hurt me?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because you had the evidence.""

I touched my temple.

The headaches.

The missing memories.

The fear.

Everything suddenly had a reason.

"He tried to erase what happened.""

Marco nodded.

"Not completely.""

"What does that mean?""

"He wanted you to forget enough that you couldn't testify.""

My breathing became uneven.

"And you saved me?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did everyone think you died?""

Marco looked at Luca.

"Because your uncle tried to kill me too.""

Silence.

Luca stared at him.

"You were the body found near the river.""

Marco nodded.

"Someone else.""

"The investigation said it was you.""

"Because someone made sure it did.""

I looked between them.

All those years.

Everyone had been chasing a lie.

Luca turned away.

For the first time, he looked lost.

Not powerless.

Never that.

But human.

"My family destroyed everything.""

Marco said nothing.

Because there was nothing to say.

I watched Luca carefully.

The man everyone feared.

The man everyone assumed had no weakness.

Standing in an abandoned archive room, realizing the people closest to him had betrayed him.

I stepped closer.

"Luca.""

He looked at me.

"You knew.""

It wasn't an accusation.

It was confusion.

"I knew pieces.""

"You knew my uncle was involved.""

"I suspected.""

"But you didn't know about me.""

"No.""

The honesty mattered.

Because Luca Moretti was many things.

But he wasn't a liar.

"I should have found the truth.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

His eyes met mine.

"You spent years trying to survive.""

A pause.

"And someone made sure you couldn't remember why.""

The investigation that followed changed everything.

Victor was found days later.

Not hiding.

Waiting.

Because he knew the truth was coming.

When Luca confronted him, Victor finally admitted everything.

Not because he felt guilty.

Because he realized there was nowhere left to run.

Vanessa cooperated.

She gave information about Marco's uncle and the financial network he had built.

She lost the engagement.

The reputation.

The life she had carefully created.

But she also revealed the one thing nobody expected.

She had been afraid of Marco's uncle too.

She wasn't innocent.

But she wasn't the monster everyone thought.

The truth was more complicated.

Like most truths.

Weeks later, I stood in the Moretti mansion again.

The same dining room.

The same chandeliers.

The same table.

But everything felt different.

The white roses were gone.

I smiled slightly when I saw a small vase on the table.

Simple flowers.

Nothing dramatic.

Luca entered the room.

No suit jacket.

No cold expression.

Just Luca.

"You are leaving.""

I looked at him.

"I thought about it.""

"And?""

I smiled.

"And I realized I don't want to spend my life running away from places where bad things happened.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

A pause.

Then:

"Your ankle healed.""

I laughed softly.

"You noticed.""

"I notice everything.""

"I know.""

He walked closer.

"Natalie.""

I looked at him.

"I owe you an apology.""

That surprised me.

"For what?""

"For believing the evidence before I believed you.""

I shook my head.

"You were trying to find the truth.""

"Yes.""

"But you also protected me.""

His eyes softened.

"Yes.""

A quiet moment passed.

Then he said:

"There is something I never asked.""

"What?""

"That night.""

My smile faded slightly.

"What about it?""

"What was the last thing you remember before everything went wrong?""

I thought about it.

The archive room.

The fear.

The confusion.

Then I remembered.

One final piece.

I looked at him.

"I remember telling you something.""

His expression changed.

"Me?""

I nodded.

"Before I lost my memory.""

"What did you say?""

I smiled sadly.

"I told you I was scared.""

He waited.

"And you told me...""

I paused.

Because now I remembered his exact words.

The words that had been buried for three years.

"You told me, 'I believe you.''"

Luca went silent.

Because he remembered.

Not the meeting.

Not the documents.

Not the investigation.

That moment.

The moment before everything fell apart.

"I forgot.""

"I know.""

"But you remembered.""

I smiled.

"Eventually.""

Outside, the city moved on.

People forgot scandals.

Companies rebuilt.

Families changed.

But some truths stayed.

Not because they were painful.

Because they mattered.

I spent three years believing my past was something I had to escape.

I was wrong.

My past was something I had to face.

Because buried beneath every lie was a truth waiting to be found.

And sometimes...

the person who saves you isn't the one who arrives when everything falls apart.

May you like

Sometimes...

it's the person who believed you before you even remembered how to believe yourself.
