Chapter 8: The Family Arrangement
The word stayed in my mind long after the courtroom emptied.
A plan.
Not a coincidence.
Not fate.
A plan.
I walked out of the courthouse feeling like the ground beneath me had shifted.
For twelve years, I had believed I knew the story of my marriage.
I met Garrick.
He pursued me.
We fell in love.
We built a life.
That was the version I carried with me.
The version I defended.
The version I mourned.
But now I was standing in the ruins of something else entirely.
Something carefully designed.
Outside the courtroom, reporters waited near the entrance.
Cameras.
Questions.
Flashes of light.
I ignored all of them.
I didn't have answers.
Not even for myself.
Nora was waiting near the car.
The moment she saw my face, she knew.
"What happened?""
I opened the door but didn't get in.
"He knew me before we met.""
Her expression changed.
"What?""
I looked back at the courthouse.
"Not just knew of me.""
I swallowed.
"He chose me.""
Nora stared.
"Why?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
But that was the problem.
I knew.
Somewhere deep down, I knew.
Because Garrick had always been too perfect in the beginning.
He remembered everything.
My favorite flowers.
My favorite books.
The things I cared about.
I had thought it meant he paid attention.
Maybe it meant he prepared.
The drive back was silent.
When I arrived at Nora's apartment, there was an envelope waiting outside the door.
No stamp.
No return address.
Just my name.
Marlowe.
I froze.
Nora noticed.
"What is it?""
I picked it up.
The handwriting made my stomach drop.
Garrick.
"I don't want to read it.""
Nora looked at me.
"Then don't.""
But my fingers were already opening it.
Inside was one page.
Only one.
And the first sentence made my chest tighten.
I know you think everything was a lie.
I almost stopped there.
But I kept reading.
You are right to think that.
I sat down.
Because I had expected excuses.
Not honesty.
When I met you, I already knew who you were. I knew about your work, your family, and the kind of person you were.
My hands shook slightly.
But I did not know I would love you.
I closed my eyes.
That sentence hurt.
Because part of me wanted to believe it.
The same part of me that had loved him.
My father created the guardianship plan after Claire was born. He believed our family needed someone trustworthy outside the Sterling name. Someone who could protect Claire if something happened.
I kept reading.
When I met you years later, I remembered you from the foundation event. I remembered how you helped people without expecting anything.
I looked down.
My father believed you were the kind of person who could save this family.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
Save.
That word.
Everyone wanted me to save something.
The company.
The family.
The child.
The reputation.
But nobody asked what saving everyone else would cost me.
The next line stopped me.
I should have told you everything before we married.
Yes.
He should have.
I was afraid that if you knew the truth, you would see me as someone broken.
I stared at the page.
Broken.
That was the word he used.
Not wrong.
Not cruel.
Broken.
As if his choices happened to him.
As if he had no control.
I read the final paragraph.
The affair with Delphine was the worst mistake of my life. But losing you was the consequence I deserved.
I almost believed him.
Almost.
Then I saw the signature.
Garrick.
Not an apology.
Not an explanation.
A confession.
The next morning, I returned to court.
This time, I arrived before everyone else again.
But I wasn't the same person.
Yesterday, I came looking for answers.
Today, I came prepared to hear the truth.
Garrick entered with his attorney.
He looked different.
Older.
Not because of age.
Because he no longer had his armor.
He approached me.
"Marlowe.""
I didn't look up.
"What?""
His voice lowered.
"I meant what I wrote.""
I folded the document.
"I know.""
He looked surprised.
"You do?""
"Yes.""
I finally looked at him.
"I believe you loved me.""
A flicker of hope crossed his face.
Then I continued.
"I also believe you used me.""
The hope disappeared.
Because both things could be true.
And that was the hardest part.
Judge Blackwood entered.
Everyone sat.
The hearing resumed.
The first person called was Cordelia Sterling.
Garrick immediately looked uncomfortable.
"Your Honor, my mother is not relevant.""
Judge Blackwood looked at him.
"Your mother signed documents connected to the matter before this court.""
Garrick had no response.
Cordelia walked to the witness stand.
For the first time, I saw her without her usual confidence.
No perfect posture.
No cold expression.
Just an older woman facing the consequences of the choices she made.
Judge Blackwood began.
"Mrs. Sterling, did you know about the guardianship arrangement involving Mrs. Ashby?""
Cordelia looked at me.
Then away.
"Yes.""
A quiet reaction moved through the room.
Garrick closed his eyes.
Judge Blackwood continued.
"When did you learn of it?""
"The night Claire was born.""
"And why was Mrs. Ashby chosen?""
Cordelia hesitated.
"Because my husband believed Garrick needed someone good in his life.""
I almost laughed.
Someone good.
As if I was a tool.
A moral compass.
A solution.
Not a person.
Judge Blackwood asked:
"Did you encourage Garrick to pursue a relationship with Mrs. Ashby?""
Cordelia looked uncomfortable.
"Not directly.""
"Explain.""
She folded her hands.
"My husband believed Garrick needed stability. He believed the Sterling name was damaged by the choices Garrick had made.""
I felt cold.
"What choices?""
Cordelia looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw guilt.
"He was reckless.""
Judge Blackwood leaned forward.
"Be specific.""
Cordelia looked at Garrick.
He shook his head slightly.
A warning.
She ignored him.
"Before Marlowe, Garrick was involved with people who wanted access to his family's money.""
My eyes narrowed.
"People?""
Cordelia nodded.
"He was young. Impulsive.""
Judge Blackwood asked:
"And Evelyn?""
Cordelia looked down.
"She was not like the others.""
Silence.
"Then why did he leave?""
Cordelia didn't answer.
The judge waited.
Finally, she said:
"Because my husband made him.""
Garrick stood.
"Mother.""
The judge looked at him.
"Sit down.""
He did.
Cordelia continued.
"My husband threatened to remove Garrick from the company.""
I listened.
"He told him that if he chose Evelyn and Claire, he would lose everything.""
"And Garrick chose the company?""
Cordelia nodded.
"Yes.""
The courtroom was quiet.
Because suddenly the picture became clearer.
Garrick had spent seventeen years trying to prove he wasn't weak.
But in doing so, he became exactly what he feared.
Judge Blackwood looked at Cordelia.
"Why was Marlowe brought into this?""
Cordelia looked at me.
Her eyes filled with regret.
"Because you were the opposite of everything Garrick had become.""
That sentence hurt.
Because it sounded like a compliment.
But it wasn't.
"You saw me as a solution too.""
Cordelia lowered her head.
"Yes.""
The honesty was almost worse.
Judge Blackwood turned to me.
"Mrs. Sterling, did you have any knowledge of this arrangement before today?""
"No.""
"And if you had known?""
I looked at Garrick.
At the man who had built my marriage on secrets.
"I would have made a different choice.""
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood.
That was the one truth Garrick could never undo.
Not the money.
Not the company.
Not the divorce.
The choice.
Judge Blackwood closed the file.
"I believe we have established the foundation of this matter.""
He looked toward the documents.
"But there is still one unanswered question.""
Everyone waited.
The judge picked up a final record.
"The financial transfers made during the marriage.""
He looked at Garrick.
"Mr. Sterling, you claim these funds were created for your daughter.""
Garrick nodded.
"Yes.""
The judge continued.
"Then explain why a portion of those funds was transferred three months before your divorce filing.""
Garrick froze.
Because that was not about Claire.
That was recent.
That was after Delphine entered his life.
Judge Blackwood looked at the document.
"And explain why the recipient was not Evelyn Hart.""
A pause.
"Not Claire.""
Another pause.
The judge looked directly at Garrick.
"The recipient was Delphine Vale.""
The room exploded into whispers.
Delphine went completely still.
And Garrick finally realized the one secret he had hidden from everyone had been found.
May you like
Because the money he claimed was about protecting his daughter...
Was the same money he used to build a new life with another woman.
