Chapter 7: The Truth Daniel Hale Buried

For several seconds, nobody looked away from Daniel Hale.

Not because we were waiting for him to explain.

Because we were waiting for him to deny it.

People always denied the truth when it hurt too much.

They shouted.

They argued.

They blamed someone else.

They did anything except admit what they had done.

But Daniel Hale didn’t.

He just stood there.

Silent.

And somehow, that was worse.

“Daniel,” I said.

His eyes moved toward me.

“Did you bring Lily here?””

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

The little girl beside Emma started crying quietly.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just the way children cry when they have been holding fear inside for too long.

Lily looked at her father.

“Why?””

That one word broke him.

His shoulders dropped.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Emma shook her head.

“No.””

Hale looked at her.

“I was.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

The words hit him harder than any accusation I could have made.

Because they came from his daughter.

A child who had spent years in a hidden room.

A child who still remembered.

I stepped closer.

“Tell us what happened.””

The smoke was getting thicker.

Every second mattered.

But I knew something important.

If we left this room without answers, whatever happened next would be worse.

Hale looked at the steel door.

At the place where his brother’s voice still came from.

Then he finally spoke.

“The night Lily disappeared…”

His voice shook.

“I found Thomas.””

Nobody moved.

“He came back.””

Mike frowned.

“You said he disappeared.””

“He did.””

“How?””

Hale looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

He took a breath.

“He came back older.””

The room went quiet.

I stared at him.

“Older?””

Hale nodded.

“But not the way a person gets older.””

The fire above us cracked again.

“He looked exhausted. Like he had been somewhere for years.””

“Where?””

Hale looked at the wall.

“Here.””

Nobody spoke.

“He told me he had found something beneath the house.””

“What?””

“A place.””

He swallowed.

“A place where time didn’t move normally.””

Mike shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Hale looked at him.

“I thought so too.””

A small knock came from the wall.

Thomas.

Listening.

Hale continued.

“Thomas said he could bring people back.””

I looked at him.

“Bring them back?””

“Yes.””

“From where?””

Hale didn’t answer.

Because the answer was obvious.

The impossible one.

The one nobody wanted to say.

The room suddenly felt colder.

“He showed me.””

Hale’s voice became quieter.

“He showed me people.””

“Alive?””

He nodded.

“People who had been missing.””

I looked at Emma and Lily.

“And your daughters?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

The word barely escaped.

I felt anger rise.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t.””

“You just said—”

“I didn’t know what would happen.””

He stepped closer.

“I swear to you, I thought I could fix it.””

That was the sentence people always said after disaster.

I thought I could fix it.

I thought I had control.

I thought I knew better.

But the fire didn’t care what people thought.

Neither did time.

“What did Thomas do?””

Hale looked at the wall.

“He told me Lily was gone.””

“But she wasn’t.””

“No.””

“What happened?””

His voice cracked.

“Thomas said she crossed over.””

I looked at Mike.

He looked just as confused.

“Crossed over?””

Hale nodded.

“He said she was somewhere between moments.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed him?””

Hale looked at Lily.

“I saw her.””

The answer stopped me.

“You saw her?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Inside this room.””

My eyes moved around.

“This room?””

Hale nodded.

“She appeared here.””

The words sounded insane.

But Lily was standing right there.

Proof that something impossible had happened.

“What about Emma?””

Hale looked at her.

“She followed.””

Emma’s face tightened.

“I didn’t follow.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at Hale.

“You brought me.””

Hale closed his eyes.

“Emma…”

“You said Lily needed me.””

A painful silence followed.

“You said if I didn’t come, she would disappear forever.””

I felt sick.

Daniel Hale hadn’t lost control.

He had made choices.

Terrible ones.

“You used your daughter to get another daughter back.””

His face collapsed.

“Yes.””

The honesty made it worse.

Because there was no excuse left.

Only damage.

Lily whispered:

“I waited for you.””

Hale looked at her.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“You don’t.””

She wiped her eyes.

“I waited every morning.””

Hale looked away.

“I waited for you to open the door.””

The room became silent.

Even Thomas stopped speaking.

“You told me you would come back.””

Lily looked at him.

“And you didn’t.””

Hale covered his face.

I had seen people break before.

But never like this.

Not from pain.

From finally understanding the pain they caused.

A violent shaking moved through the walls.

The hidden room trembled.

Mike looked up.

“We’re done talking.””

He pointed toward the door.

“We need out.””

I nodded.

Then the steel door unlocked.

Everyone froze.

The keypad lit up.

But nobody touched it.

Slowly…

the door opened.

Not toward us.

Away from us.

Into darkness.

A hallway existed behind it.

A hallway that hadn’t been there before.

Mike stared.

“No.””

I understood what he meant.

The building was impossible.

The basement was impossible.

Everything about this place was wrong.

But there was still a child trapped here.

And that was the only thing that mattered.

I lifted my flashlight.

“We move.””

Hale grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face was filled with terror.

“Because that’s where Thomas is.””

I pulled free.

“We know.””

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“But I understand children are trapped.””

Then I stepped into the hallway.

The air changed immediately.

Cold.

Still.

Almost silent.

The walls were covered in photographs.

Hundreds of them.

People.

Families.

Missing persons.

All arranged carefully.

Mike shined his light across them.

“Oh my God.””

I moved closer.

Every photograph had a date.

Every date was different.

Some were decades old.

Some were recent.

And every person had one thing in common.

They had vanished.

At the end of the hallway was a door.

A normal wooden door.

Unlike everything else.

Almost welcoming.

Then we saw the writing on it.

Three names.

Carved into the wood.

*LILY.*

*EMMA.*

*THOMAS.*

Hale stopped behind us.

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

His face was frozen.

“He wasn’t trying to bring them back.””

“What was he trying to do?””

Hale stared at the names.

Then whispered:

“He was replacing them.””

Before I could ask what that meant…

the door opened.

A man stood on the other side.

Not a shadow.

Not a voice.

A person.

He looked exactly like the photographs beside him.

But older.

Tired.

His eyes moved toward Daniel Hale.

And he smiled.

“Brother.””

Hale stepped backward.

Thomas looked past him.

At Lily.

At Emma.

Then back at me.

“You finally found them.””

I raised my flashlight.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled.

“My name is Thomas Hale.””

A pause.

“And I’m the reason this house never burned down.””

Behind him, deeper in the darkness…

something moved.

Something bigger.

Something breathing.

Thomas looked at me.

“You should leave.””

I tightened my grip.

“Why?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because the fire isn’t destroying this house.””

May you like

A beat.

“It’s waking it up.””
