Chapter 6: When the Spotlight Turned

The hotel ballroom was already crowded when I arrived on Saturday afternoon.

Crystal lights hung from the ceiling, reflecting off polished floors and tall mirrors. Rows of chairs faced a raised stage decorated with white flowers and gold lettering.

A banner stretched across the back wall.

*BEST DRESS COMPETITION — STUDENT DESIGN SHOWCASE*

Models, designers, parents, and guests moved through the lobby in colorful formalwear.

Some contestants carried garment bags.

Others wore their creations.

A few had brought entire portfolios, which they showed to the event staff while discussing fabric choices and construction techniques.

I tightened my grip on my folder.

For the first time, I felt nervous.

Not because I doubted the dress.

Because I knew the people who had taken it were somewhere in this building.

I spotted Vanessa near the registration table.

She wore a fitted navy dress and carried a small designer handbag. Dad stood beside her, looking uncomfortable in his dark suit.

Brianna was in front of them.

My gown flowed around her as she walked.

The sculpted shoulders framed her face, and the colors shimmered beneath the ballroom lights. The train trailed behind her, drawing attention from people passing through the lobby.

Several guests stopped to admire it.

One woman approached Brianna.

“That is absolutely stunning. Who designed it?””

Brianna smiled.

“I did.””

My fingers tightened around the folder.

The woman looked impressed.

“You designed the entire piece?””

“Yes. It took months to perfect.””

Vanessa watched proudly.

Dad smiled at the woman.

“Our Brianna has always been creative.””

I stood several feet away, listening.

The woman asked Brianna about the fabric.

Brianna glanced down at the gown.

“It's a special satin. I used several different colors to create the effect.””

“And the sculpted shoulders?””

“I wanted something dramatic.””

“What inspired the pattern?””

Brianna hesitated.

Then she smiled again.

“The ocean.””

The woman nodded appreciatively.

“Beautiful work.””

She moved away.

Brianna turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you hear that?””

Vanessa kissed her cheek.

“Of course, sweetheart.””

I felt something tighten in my chest.

It wasn't jealousy.

It was grief.

For years, I had imagined showing my work to someone who might understand how much it meant to me. I had imagined my father standing beside me, telling people that his daughter had created something extraordinary.

Now he was doing exactly that for Brianna.

And the only thing she had created was a lie.

I took a slow breath.

Then I walked toward the registration desk.

A young woman wearing an event badge greeted me.

“Good afternoon. Are you here for the competition?””

“Yes. My name is Nia Carter.””

She checked the list.

“Are you a contestant?””

“No. I'm here regarding a submitted design.””

She looked up.

“Do you have an appointment?””

I handed her the message from Mrs. Alvarez's contact and explained that I had been asked to bring my original design records.

The woman's expression became more attentive.

“Please wait here for a moment.””

She stepped away and spoke to another staff member.

A few minutes later, a woman in her forties approached me.

She had short dark hair, a charcoal jacket, and a silver measuring tape draped around her neck.

“I'm Claire Bennett,” she said.

“I'm coordinating the student showcase.””

I recognized her name from the event website.

“It's nice to meet you.””

She glanced at my folder.

“Mrs. Alvarez told me a little about your work. She was very enthusiastic.””

I felt my cheeks warm.

“She helped me improve my sewing skills.””

“Then she's done a good job.””

Claire led me toward a small room beside the ballroom.

Inside were two tables, several chairs, and a rack holding garments from the competition.

“May I see your documentation?””

I opened the folder.

First, I showed her the original sketches.

Then the photographs of the damaged gown.

Then the revised designs and the pictures of the completed dress.

Claire studied each page carefully.

She didn't rush.

She examined the seams, the colorwork, and the details of the train.

Finally, she looked at the photograph of me standing beside the gown in Mrs. Alvarez's shop.

“This was taken before the competition registration?””

“Yes.””

“And you created the original design?””

“Yes.””

She leaned back.

“Can you explain the process?””

I told her about the white satin, the paint damage, and the decision to incorporate the stains into a new design.

I explained how I had reinforced the weakened fabric, adjusted the shoulders, and used the folds of the skirt to guide the color placement.

As I spoke, my nervousness began to fade.

I wasn't simply defending myself anymore.

I was talking about the work I loved.

Claire listened with growing interest.

When I finished, she pointed to one of the sketches.

“Why did you choose asymmetrical sleeves?””

“I wanted the dress to feel as though it was moving. The original paint stains were uneven, so I didn't want the final design to look too symmetrical.””

“And the gold stitching?””

“It follows the direction of the train. I wanted it to catch the light without overpowering the colors.””

She nodded.

“That's a thoughtful approach.””

I swallowed.

“Thank you.””

Claire closed the folder.

“I need to ask you something important. Is the gown currently being worn by another contestant?””

I hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“My stepsister, Brianna.””

Claire's expression changed slightly.

“Did you authorize her to enter it as her own design?””

“No.””

“Did you give her permission to wear it?””

“No.””

She folded her hands.

“Do you have any reason to believe she intends to claim authorship?””

I thought about the registration declaration.

The photograph online.

The conversation I had overheard between Vanessa and Brianna.

“Yes,” I said.

“She has already told people she designed it.””

Claire nodded slowly.

“Thank you for being direct. We take authorship claims seriously, but we also have to give every entrant an opportunity to respond.””

“I understand.””

“I'm going to speak with the head judge and review the registration details. Please remain available.””

She stood.

Before leaving, she looked at me again.

“Nia, whatever happens today, don't let the situation make you forget that the work itself is impressive.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Thank you.””

When I returned to the lobby, the competition was preparing to begin.

Guests were taking their seats.

The contestants were gathering backstage.

Vanessa spotted me immediately.

Her face went rigid.

“What are you doing here?””

I held my folder against my side.

“Watching the competition.””

“You were told to stay home.””

“No, you told me to stay home.””

She stepped closer.

“Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is?””

I looked at her.

“I'm not the one pretending to have designed someone else's work.””

Her face flushed.

“Lower your voice.””

“I am speaking quietly.””

Dad approached.

“Nia, please.””

I turned toward him.

“I submitted evidence of my work to the organizers. They're reviewing it.””

His expression changed.

“You did what?””

“I showed them my sketches and photographs.””

Vanessa stared at me.

“You had no right to do that.””

I blinked.

“My work is being entered under someone else's name.””

“You are trying to sabotage Brianna!””

“No. I'm correcting a false claim.””

Brianna appeared from behind them.

She was still wearing my gown.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa turned to her daughter.

“Nothing. Go backstage.””

Brianna looked from her mother to me.

Then she noticed the folder.

Her face drained of color.

“You brought those?””

I held her gaze.

“Yes.””

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“Go backstage. Now.””

Brianna hesitated.

Then she hurried away, gathering the train of my gown in both hands.

Dad watched her go.

He looked at me as though he were seeing a stranger.

“You could have discussed this with us first.””

“I did.””

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

The announcement system crackled overhead.

“Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats. The Best Dress Competition will begin in ten minutes.””

Vanessa straightened her shoulders.

She leaned toward me.

“Whatever you think you're accomplishing, you will regret it.””

I didn't answer.

She followed Dad toward the ballroom.

I remained in the lobby for several seconds, breathing slowly.

Then Claire returned.

“Thank you for waiting.””

“Have you reviewed the registration?””

“We have.””

She paused.

“The entry was submitted under Brianna's name as both model and original designer.””

I nodded.

“That's what I thought.””

“Before we make any decisions, the head judge would like to speak with both of you.””

My heart began pounding.

“Both of us?””

“Yes. We want to hear your explanation and give Brianna an opportunity to respond.””

I looked toward the ballroom doors.

Brianna was standing backstage, adjusting the sculpted shoulders while Vanessa smoothed the train.

She looked confident again.

Perhaps Vanessa had convinced her that everything would be fine.

Perhaps Brianna believed she could talk her way out of anything, just as she always had at home.

Claire lowered her voice.

“One more thing. The guest designer who reviewed your submission has arrived.””

“Who is she?””

“Her name is Victoria Hale.””

The name meant something to me.

I had seen it in fashion articles at the public library.

Victoria Hale was an established designer whose work had appeared in major fashion publications. She had built her reputation on unconventional silhouettes and the creative use of fabric.

I stared at Claire.

“She reviewed my dress?””

“She reviewed the photographs Mrs. Alvarez sent with your permission.””

I remembered the message.

I had assumed Victoria might glance at my work and offer a few polite words.

I hadn't imagined she would come to the competition specifically because of it.

Claire continued.

“She has asked to examine your original sketches before the judging begins.””

I looked down at my folder.

For the first time all afternoon, my hands stopped shaking.

“Of course.””

Claire led me through a side door into a quiet corridor.

At the far end, a woman stood beside a table, examining a printed photograph.

She wore a tailored black suit and held a pair of reading glasses in one hand.

When she looked up, I recognized her from the photograph on the fashion magazine cover I had once studied at the library.

Victoria Hale.

She extended her hand.

“Nia Carter?””

“Yes.””

“It's a pleasure to meet you.””

I shook her hand.

She glanced at the photograph.

“This is your gown?””

“Yes.””

“And you created the design after the original fabric was damaged?””

“Yes.””

She studied me for a moment.

“That's an unusual way to begin a collection.””

I gave a nervous laugh.

“I didn't plan it.””

“Most interesting designs begin with something unexpected.””

She turned to my sketches.

I explained the progression from the original white gown to the final ocean-inspired piece.

Victoria asked precise questions about the construction, the paint treatment, and the way I had reinforced the satin.

I answered as honestly as I could.

When I finished, she looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite interpret.

“You understand something many beginners don't,” she said.

“What?””

“Design isn't merely about making something beautiful. It's about making choices and understanding why those choices work.””

She set the sketches down.

“Your work shows intention. That's what interests me.””

My heart pounded.

“Thank you.””

She glanced toward the ballroom.

“Now, let's see how the person wearing your gown explains those choices.””

I followed her gaze.

Through the open doorway, I could see Brianna waiting in line with the other contestants.

Vanessa stood in the front row, smiling proudly.

Dad sat beside her.

The lights dimmed.

The host stepped onto the stage and welcomed the audience.

Then he announced the first contestant.

The competition had begun.

I took my place near the side of the stage, holding my portfolio.

Brianna was scheduled to appear near the end.

When her name was finally called, she stepped into the spotlight.

The audience applauded.

My gown shimmered beneath the lights.

Brianna lifted her chin, turned toward the judges, and smiled as though she had been born to stand there.

The host approached her.

“Brianna, this is a remarkable piece. Tell us about the inspiration behind your design.””

She took the microphone.

For a moment, she glanced toward Vanessa.

Then she looked at the judges.

“I wanted to create something that represented strength, transformation, and the beauty of the ocean.””

Victoria Hale leaned forward.

“Interesting. And how did you develop the color placement?””

Brianna smiled.

“I experimented with different techniques until I found the right combination.””

Victoria nodded.

“And the sculpted shoulders? What was your construction process?””

Brianna's smile faltered.

“Well, I wanted them to look dramatic.””

“Of course. But how did you support the shape without making the bodice too rigid?””

Brianna stared at her.

The microphone captured the silence.

Victoria waited.

Brianna looked toward Vanessa again.

Then she gave a nervous laugh.

“I'd have to explain that in more detail.””

Victoria's expression remained calm.

“Please do.””

Brianna opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The room grew quiet.

I felt my pulse beating in my fingertips.

Then Victoria turned toward the competition coordinator.

“Before we proceed, I'd like to request a review of this entry's design authorship.””

The host lowered his microphone.

Brianna went pale.

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“What is this about?””

Victoria looked toward the front row.

“It's a standard procedure when questions arise about original work.””

Then she turned back to Brianna.

“Please tell us, in your own words, who created this gown.””

Brianna gripped the microphone.

May you like

For the first time since I had known her, she looked as though she had no idea what to say.

And the entire ballroom was waiting for her answer.
