Chapter 9: The Man Who Started It All
My father was dead.
I knew that.
I had stood beside his hospital bed.
I had held his hand when he stopped breathing.
I had listened to my mother cry after the funeral.
I had watched them lower his coffin into the ground.
So when Harold’s message appeared on my phone—
*Claire’s father.*
—I felt something inside me reject reality.
“No.””
The word escaped before I even realized I had spoken.
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I turned the phone toward him.
His expression changed immediately.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Fear.
“You knew something.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Daniel.””
“I swear.””
“You had that look.””
He looked at the screen again.
Then at my mother.
Then at Lily.
Nobody moved.
Nobody denied it.
And that was somehow worse.
I looked at my mother.
“Is my father alive?””
Her lips parted.
But no words came.
That was the answer.
The answer I had been avoiding.
“Mom.””
She started crying.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No, don’t say my name like that.””
I stepped back.
“I buried him.””
My mother covered her face.
“I know.””
“You were there.””
“I know.””
“You watched me say goodbye.””
“I know.””
“Then why is Harold saying he’s alive?””
The room was silent.
Then Lily spoke.
“Because Harold wants you to think your father is the enemy.””
I looked at her.
“And is he?””
Lily hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than anything.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I looked around the room.
“My whole life is built on things people ‘don’t know.’”
Daniel reached for me.
I moved away.
Not because I hated him.
Because I didn’t know who anyone was anymore.
“My father died,” I said.
My mother looked down.
“He didn’t.””
The sentence was barely audible.
But it destroyed me.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She wiped her tears.
“Your father disappeared.””
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You told me he died.””
“I thought he did.””
“That is not the same thing.””
My mother looked like she wanted to explain.
Like she had been waiting years for this moment and still wasn’t ready.
“Your father found out about Harold.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did he find?””
My mother looked at him.
“The truth.””
A bitter smile crossed her face.
“Everyone who got close to the truth paid a price.””
Lily nodded slowly.
“That’s why I disappeared.””
I looked at her.
“Explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Your father was investigating the same thing I was.””
“The files?””
“Yes.””
“The children?””
“Yes.””
“The marks?””
“Yes.””
I looked down at my daughter.
Everything came back to her.
Always her.
“What did he discover?””
Lily looked at the document on the table.
“He discovered Harold wasn’t continuing the work.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“He was hiding the person who was.””
The room went quiet.
I felt a chill.
“Who?””
Lily looked at my mother.
Then at me.
“Your father.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I backed away.
“You’re saying my father was part of this?””
Lily shook her head.
“Not willingly.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
“Your father was trying to expose it.””
The anger and fear inside me collided.
“Then why hide?””
“Because he found out someone close to him was involved.””
My eyes moved to my mother.
She looked away.
“No.””
I whispered it.
But nobody answered.
“Mom?””
She started crying harder.
“I didn’t know.””
“What didn’t you know?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t know how deep it went.””
“Who?””
Her hands trembled.
“Your grandfather.””
The room became silent.
Again.
Always another person.
Another generation.
Another secret.
“My grandfather?””
My mother nodded.
“He started the research.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“My grandfather started it too.””
Lily nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared.
“So everyone is connected.””
“Yes.””
“Then why me?””
Nobody answered.
I held my daughter tighter.
“Why my baby?””
Lily’s expression softened.
“Because Harold thought the final piece was missing.””
“What piece?””
“The truth.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lily walked toward the table.
She picked up the document.
“The marks appear in your family every few generations.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“We don’t know.””
“You said it was a warning.””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Lily looked at the page.
“From the children before.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“But Harold believed it.””
“Believed what?””
“That the marks weren’t signs of illness.””
A pause.
“That they were signs of memory.””
The room went quiet.
I stared at her.
“Memory?””
“Yes.””
“Babies don’t remember anything.””
“Not like we do.””
Lily touched the photograph of the children.
“Harold believed they carried information.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“Maybe.””
Lily looked at him.
“But impossible things are exactly what people like Harold chase.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone froze.
Another message.
This time, a video.
My finger hovered over it.
I didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
The screen showed a dark room.
A chair.
A table.
A man sitting with his back toward the camera.
My breath caught.
The man turned.
I dropped the phone.
Because I knew that face.
Older.
Thinner.
Changed.
But unmistakable.
My father.
Alive.
Daniel picked up the phone.
He watched the video.
Then looked at me.
The recording continued.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“Claire.””
My entire body froze.
His voice.
The same voice that used to wake me up for school.
The same voice that sang badly in the car.
The same voice I had believed I would never hear again.
“If you’re watching this, Harold failed.””
I covered my mouth.
My father continued.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Two words from a dead man.
“I wanted to come home.””
My tears started falling.
“But I couldn’t.””
The video shook slightly.
Like whoever recorded it was moving.
My father looked over his shoulder.
Then back at the camera.
“Your mother tried to protect you.””
My mother broke down.
“I tried too.””
His face became serious.
“Harold will tell you I was part of it.””
A pause.
“He will tell you I helped create the program.””
My breathing stopped.
“But I didn’t.””
Daniel looked at me.
The video continued.
“I discovered what they were doing.””
My father swallowed.
“And when I tried to expose them, they took everything from me.””
A shadow moved behind him.
Someone else was in the room.
My father looked frightened.
“Claire, listen carefully.””
I leaned closer.
“Your daughter is not the reason this started.””
A pause.
“She is the reason it ends.””
The screen flickered.
Then my father said the words that made everyone freeze.
“The person you should fear is not Harold.””
The video cut for a second.
Then returned.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“The person you should fear is the one who has been protecting Harold all these years.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A voice came through.
Not Harold.
Not Lily.
Not my father.
A woman.
Calm.
Controlled.
“Daniel.””
He froze.
“Who is this?””
The woman ignored him.
“Claire is going to make the same mistake her mother made.””
My mother stood.
“Who are you?””
The woman laughed softly.
“You already know.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
The woman continued.
“You just never wanted to believe it.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel?””
He stared at the phone.
His hand started shaking.
The woman said one final sentence.
And when she did, every secret in the room shifted.
“Ask your husband why he really married you.””
The call ended.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Daniel.
My husband.
The man who had hidden things.
The man who had loved me.
The man whose family had destroyed mine.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him…
he looked like someone afraid of what I would discover.
“I can explain.””
Those four words broke something inside me.
Because I had heard them before.
From Harold.
From my mother.
From everyone who had ever taken the truth away from me.
I stepped back.
“What did you do?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“The marriage wasn’t an accident.””
