Chapter 7: The Woman Who Became Me
“I’m the woman Beatrice hired to become you.””
For a moment, I couldn’t speak.
The apartment around me disappeared.
The voices.
The footsteps.
The shocked faces staring at me.
Everything faded except that sentence.
A stranger had just admitted she had pretended to be me.
She had worn my identity.
Signed my name.
And sat across from a notary while everyone believed she was Valerie Carter.
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
The woman breathed shakily.
“I’m at a hotel outside the city.””
“Why are you calling me now?””
Silence.
Then:
“Because I saw what she did to your daughter.””
My eyes moved toward Daisy’s stuffed rabbit sitting on the chair near the door.
The image of her standing on the balcony came back.
Her shaved head.
Her trembling hands.
Her tiny voice saying, “I didn’t take anything.””
My voice became colder.
“What does that have to do with you?””
The woman hesitated.
“Everything.””
I turned away from everyone.
“Tell me your name.””
“Claire Morgan.””
“And why should I believe you?””
“Because I have proof.””
I looked at Beatrice.
She was watching me.
And for the first time, she looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
“What proof?””
Claire answered quietly.
“Messages.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Between me and Beatrice?””
“Yes.””
I walked toward the hallway.
“Send them.””
“I will.””
“Now.””
A few seconds passed.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
One photo.
Then another.
Then dozens.
I opened the first one.
My stomach turned.
It was a conversation between Claire and Beatrice.
The contact name at the top said:
*Beatrice W.*
The first message was from six weeks earlier.
*Beatrice: I need someone who can copy a signature and follow instructions.*
I scrolled.
*Claire: Why me?*
*Beatrice: Because you know how to look professional, and because nobody in this family will question it.*
My hands started shaking.
I kept reading.
*Claire: I don’t understand why she needs to sign.*
*Beatrice: She doesn’t. That’s the point.*
I stopped.
I closed my eyes.
For a second, I thought I might be sick.
Then I showed the phone to Ethan.
His face changed with every line he read.
“I didn’t know.””
I looked at him.
“Stop saying that.””
He flinched.
Because this time, even he knew it wasn’t enough.
I showed Daniel.
He read silently.
Then nodded.
“This is significant evidence.””
Brenda covered her mouth.
“She really planned everything.””
Raymond looked toward the bedroom.
The woman he had married decades ago was standing ten feet away.
And somehow, she seemed like a stranger.
Beatrice suddenly stepped forward.
“Give me that phone.””
Nobody moved.
“Beatrice,” Raymond said quietly.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t understand.””
I turned toward her.
“No, I understand perfectly.””
She pointed at me.
“You think I wanted this?””
“You hired someone to steal my identity.””
“I was desperate.””
“You hurt my daughter.””
Her face tightened.
“I never wanted Daisy to get hurt.””
I stared at her.
“But you were willing to risk it.””
She had no answer.
Because there was no explanation that could make that sentence disappear.
My phone vibrated again.
A new message from Claire.
*Claire: There’s one more thing you need to know.*
I opened it.
A video file.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a small room.
Claire was sitting in front of the camera.
She looked exhausted.
Older than I expected.
“I know you probably hate me,” she said.
Her voice trembled.
“But I need you to understand something.””
She looked down.
“I didn’t know she was going to hurt a child.””
The video continued.
“Beatrice told me she needed help with paperwork because she was trying to save her family’s home.””
I watched Claire wipe her eyes.
“She said you already agreed to help, but you were refusing to sign because you were angry.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
A lie.
Another lie.
“She gave me copies of your driver’s license, your passport photo, and other documents.””
I looked at Ethan.
Because suddenly, I knew where she got them.
“She told me she only needed me to sign once.””
Claire looked directly into the camera.
“Afterward, she paid me and told me to forget everything.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan whispered:
“My mother had your passport?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
His face went pale.
“How?””
That question finally broke something inside me.
Because I realized something.
All of them kept asking how.
How did she get the documents?
How did she know?
How did she plan it?
But nobody asked the most important question.
Why had nobody noticed?
I looked at Ethan.
“You lived with her for thirty years.””
He looked hurt.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
My voice softened.
“You trusted her because you wanted to believe she was good.””
He looked away.
“And I trusted you because I wanted to believe you protected me.””
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But I needed him to feel it.
Because I had been carrying the pain alone.
Brenda suddenly stood.
“I need to tell you something.””
Everyone looked at her.
She walked slowly toward the table.
“I knew Mom was angry at you.””
I said nothing.
“I knew she didn’t like how close Ethan was to you.””
Still nothing.
“But I didn’t know about the documents.””
She looked down.
“I swear.””
I believed she was telling the truth.
But that didn’t mean I forgave her.
“You watched Daisy get punished.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
I pointed toward the door.
“You saw a little girl being blamed by adults she trusted.””
Brenda started crying.
“And you stayed quiet.””
She nodded.
“I was scared of Mom.””
I looked at her.
“Daisy was three.””
The room went silent.
Because there was no excuse smaller than that.
Daisy was three.
She had no power.
No voice.
No way to defend herself.
Only adults who were supposed to protect her.
And they failed.
Daniel gathered his papers.
“I think everyone needs to prepare for the consequences of this.””
Beatrice suddenly looked at him.
“You’re going to report me?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“I’m going to report what happened.””
That was worse.
Because truth doesn’t need anger.
It only needs evidence.
I picked up my coat.
“I’m taking Daisy home.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Valerie.””
I stopped.
He looked broken.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
I said nothing.
“But please let me be her father.””
I looked at him.
“That’s not something you ask me for.””
He swallowed.
“That’s something you prove to her.””
His eyes filled.
I walked past him.
At the door, my phone buzzed one more time.
Another message from Claire.
This one wasn’t a photo.
It was a single sentence.
*Valerie, there is something else Beatrice did. Something she never wanted Ethan to find out.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*She didn’t just fake your signature. She used your identity to open an account in your name.*
My blood ran cold.
Because if that was true…
May you like
The person who had tried to destroy my family wasn’t finished.
She had only started.
