Chapter 8: The Voice From The Grave

I stared at the message until my eyes burned.

*But he still hasn’t told you what happened after Marcus fell.*

After Marcus fell.

Those words haunted me.

Not what happened before.

Not the argument.

Not the betrayal.

After.

There was something Ethan had kept hidden even after everything else came out.

I looked at Rachel.

She had been watching my face.

“What happened?”” she asked.

I turned my phone toward her.

Her expression changed immediately.

“That number…”

“You know it?””

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Marcus used that number.””

My heart stopped.

“But Ethan said someone was using his phone.””

Rachel looked down.

“Because someone is.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

And I was beginning to hate that everyone seemed to have pieces of the truth while I was always standing outside the door.

“Rachel.””

She took a deep breath.

“Marcus had a habit.””

“What habit?””

“He didn’t trust anyone.””

I almost smiled.

“Smart man.””

“He recorded conversations. He saved documents. He created backups.””

“Because he was afraid?””

“Because he knew people around him weren’t telling the truth.””

I thought about the note.

The recording.

The warnings.

Marcus hadn’t been trying to destroy Ethan.

He had been preparing.

“For what?””

Rachel looked at me.

“For the possibility that he wouldn’t survive.””

The words were quiet.

But they hit hard.

That night, I returned home.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed to.

The house was dark when I arrived.

For years, this place had represented safety.

Now every room felt like evidence.

The living room where Ethan held me after we learned we couldn’t have children.

The kitchen where Carol criticized my cooking and my “empty future.””

The bedroom where my husband slept beside me while hiding another life.

I walked upstairs.

Then I stopped.

A light was on in Ethan’s office.

I didn’t remember leaving it that way.

I opened the door slowly.

Ethan was inside.

He looked up.

“Mira.””

I stayed near the doorway.

“What are you doing?””

“Waiting for you.””

“Why?””

He looked exhausted.

“Because I need to tell you something before someone else does.””

That sentence made my stomach tighten.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I walked inside.

“Tell me.””

Ethan stood.

“I lied about Marcus.””

I said nothing.

“I told you he saved me.””

“He did.””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“But not the way I said.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the floor.

“Marcus didn’t just pull me out of the water.””

I waited.

“He went back.””

“For what?””

“For me.””

The pain in his voice sounded real.

“He had already reached the boat. He was safe.””

I frowned.

“Then why did he go back?””

“Because I wasn’t.””

A chill ran through me.

“What happened?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“He heard me yelling.””

“After you fell?””

“No.””

The room went silent.

“Before.””

I stared.

“You fell first?””

He nodded.

“Marcus pushed me away from the side of the boat when the storm hit.””

My heart raced.

“So Marcus saved you.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you hiding?””

His face broke.

“I wasn’t alone.””

I froze.

“What?””

“There was someone else there.””

The words came slowly.

“Someone who wasn’t supposed to be on that boat.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Ethan looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

“My mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“Carol?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

“She was there.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She said she wanted to talk to Marcus.””

My mind raced.

“About the money.””

Ethan nodded.

“About everything.””

“Then what happened?””

His voice became quieter.

“The argument got worse.””

“Between who?””

“Marcus and my mother.””

I thought about the recording.

Carol’s name.

Marcus’s warning.

“Where were you?””

“I was near the back of the boat.””

“Listening?””

“Yes.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You heard them arguing.””

“Yes.””

“What did they say?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Marcus said he was going to tell you everything.””

My heart tightened.

“About you?””

“Yes.””

“About Liana?””

“Yes.””

“About the money?””

“Yes.””

“And Carol?””

His silence answered.

Then Ethan said:

“Marcus threatened to expose her.””

The room felt cold.

“What did Carol do?””

Ethan looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“Ethan.””

“I don’t know.””

His voice cracked.

“But I saw them fighting.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Then what happened?””

He took a long breath.

“Marcus fell.””

“Because of Carol?””

“I don’t know.””

Again.

That phrase.

I hated it.

“You watched him fall.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“I froze.””

I stared at him.

“My best friend was in the water.””

His eyes filled.

“I was terrified.””

“Terrified of what?””

He looked at me.

“Of what I had seen.””

The answer chilled me.

“You saw something.””

Silence.

“You saw who pushed him.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

But he didn’t deny it.

The next morning, I met Liana.

I didn’t tell Ethan.

I didn’t tell anyone.

She agreed to meet me at a quiet park.

She looked different.

Not because she had changed.

Because I was finally seeing her clearly.

“You know,” she said.

I nodded.

“About Marcus.””

Her eyes filled.

“I should have told you sooner.””

“Yes.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Ethan?””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I know what he can do when he’s desperate.””

I studied her.

“You were with him before Marcus died.””

She nodded.

“I was.””

“And the baby?””

Her face changed.

“My baby is not Ethan’s.””

“I know.””

She looked surprised.

“How?””

“Rachel.””

The color drained from her face.

“She found you?””

“She found me.””

Liana sat down.

“I never wanted this.””

I remained standing.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did you stay?””

She looked at her hands.

“Because after Marcus died, I had nowhere to go.””

“And Ethan helped.””

“Yes.””

“Too much.””

She nodded.

“I confused kindness with love.””

The honesty surprised me.

“What happened after you found out Marcus recorded everything?””

Her eyes widened.

“He told you?””

“He left clues.””

She looked terrified.

“Mira…”

“What?””

Liana whispered:

“Marcus didn’t trust the recording.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“He made copies.””

“How many?””

“I don’t know.””

“Where are they?””

She looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“One was given to someone he trusted.””

“Who?””

Her eyes moved to me.

“You.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Marcus told me before he died.””

The wind moved through the trees.

“He said if anything happened, you were the only person who deserved the truth.””

My heart pounded.

“But I never received anything.””

Liana looked confused.

“Then someone intercepted it.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t have to.

We both knew.

Carol.

That evening, I searched through old mail.

Every birthday card.

Every letter.

Every package.

Anything that could have been taken.

Then I found it.

A small envelope hidden behind old photo albums.

No return address.

My name written in handwriting I recognized.

Marcus.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a note.

*Mira,*

*If you are reading this, I’m probably gone.*

I swallowed.

*I’m sorry you had to learn the truth this way.*

I plugged the drive into my laptop.

One video file appeared.

Recorded the night Marcus died.

I clicked play.

The screen showed darkness.

Wind.

Water.

Then voices.

Marcus.

Carol.

And Ethan.

Marcus sounded furious.

“You think you can control everyone forever.””

Carol replied coldly.

“I protected this family.””

“You destroyed it.””

“You don’t understand what’s at stake.””

Then Ethan’s voice.

“Mom, stop.””

I froze.

He was there.

Then Marcus said:

“Mira will know.””

A pause.

Then Carol whispered:

“No, she won’t.””

The video shook.

A struggle.

A scream.

Then Marcus’s voice.

One final sentence.

“She’s recording this too.””

The screen went black.

I stopped breathing.

Because that sentence changed everything.

She’s recording this too.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

Someone on that boat.

Someone who had been hiding the truth.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A familiar voice spoke.

Not a message.

Not a recording.

A real person.

“Mira.””

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

It belonged to Carol.

“I know you found the drive.””

I couldn’t speak.

She continued.

“And now you’re finally ready to hear why Marcus had to die.””

The call went silent.

Then she said:

“But before you judge me…”

May you like

A pause.

“You should ask Ethan what he did after I pushed him into the water.””
