Chapter 3: The Message From the Past

I stared at the unknown number until the screen went dark.

The words remained in my mind even after they disappeared.

*You don’t know the whole story.*

For a moment, I wondered if I was dreaming.

Maybe my brain was trying to create another disaster because one betrayal wasn’t enough.

Maybe after discovering the woman in the mall, the hotel charge, and the jewelry purchase, I had reached the point where anything else felt possible.

But the phone was still in my hand.

The message was real.

And someone out there knew something about my husband that I didn’t.

“Emily?””

I looked up.

Margaret was standing beside my chair.

Her eyes moved from my face to my phone.

“What happened?””

I locked the screen.

“Someone texted me.””

Her expression changed.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel looked over from across the table.

“What is it?””

His voice was too quick.

Too interested.

I noticed.

Before yesterday, I would have thought it was concern.

Now I wondered if it was fear.

“Nothing,” I said.

Daniel’s eyebrows pulled together.

“You just looked upset.””

“I said it’s nothing.””

The words came out sharper than I expected.

Everyone became quiet.

Daniel stared at me.

I think that was the first moment he realized something had changed.

I wasn’t asking him what was wrong.

I wasn’t trying to make him comfortable.

I wasn’t rushing to explain my emotions.

I was watching him.

And he hated it.

“Emily,” he said softly, “what is going on?””

I almost laughed.

What is going on?

That was the question I had spent the last twenty-four hours asking myself.

What was going on in my marriage?

What was going on in my husband’s phone?

What was going on behind all the smiles and late nights and excuses?

I placed my napkin on the table.

“I need some air.””

I stood before anyone could stop me.

Outside, the Chicago winter hit me immediately.

The cold was sharp enough to make my eyes water.

I walked down the driveway and wrapped my coat tighter around myself.

Behind me, the front door opened.

I expected Daniel.

Instead, it was Margaret.

She came outside and stood beside me.

“You received a message.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at her.

“How did you know?””

“Because Daniel looked more afraid when you said nothing than when you accused him.””

I looked away.

I showed her the message.

She read it silently.

Her face changed slightly.

Not shock.

Recognition.

That scared me.

“You know who this is.””

Margaret didn’t answer immediately.

“Maybe.””

“Margaret.””

She sighed.

“I know someone who might have a reason to contact you.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the house.

“Not here.””

That answer made my stomach tighten.

“Why does everyone keep saying that?””

“Because your husband is inside.””

“So?””

“So because if Daniel realizes what we know before we understand it ourselves, he will start cleaning up.””

The word made my skin crawl.

Cleaning up.

Not explaining.

Not apologizing.

Cleaning up.

I looked at the glowing windows of the house.

“Who is she?””

Margaret was quiet.

Then she said:

“Her name is Claire Bennett.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is Claire?””

Margaret folded her arms against the cold.

“She worked with Daniel three years ago.””

I waited.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

I turned toward her.

“What happened?””

Margaret looked uncomfortable.

And that was something I had never seen before.

Margaret was always composed.

Even when she saw her son with another woman.

Even when she confronted him.

But now?

She looked like someone opening a door she had kept locked for a long time.

“Three years ago,” she said, “Daniel came home one night and told us he had made a mistake.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What mistake?””

“He said there was a problem at work.””

I stared at her.

“What kind of problem?””

She looked down.

“A woman accused him of crossing a line.””

The cold suddenly felt stronger.

“Accused him?””

Margaret nodded.

“He denied it.””

“And you believed him?””

Her eyes met mine.

“I wanted to.””

That hurt.

Not because she had believed her son.

Because I understood.

I had done the same thing.

For years.

I had wanted to believe him.

“So what happened?””

“The woman left the company.””

“Because of Daniel?””

“I don’t know.””

“You just said she accused him.””

“I said she accused him,” Margaret replied carefully.

“I did not say I knew exactly what happened.””

I appreciated that.

Because for the first time, someone wasn’t giving me a simple story.

They were giving me pieces.

Pieces I had to put together myself.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Margaret looked away.

“Because Daniel convinced everyone it was a misunderstanding.””

“Everyone?””

She nodded.

“Your husband is very good at making himself the victim.””

The sentence hurt because it sounded true.

I looked at my phone again.

“Do you think Claire sent this?””

“I think you should find out.””

That answer surprised me.

“You’re not going to tell me what to do?””

“No.””

“Why?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Because this is your marriage.””

She paused.

“And your decision.””

I swallowed.

A few minutes later, we went back inside.

Dinner ended shortly after.

Daniel barely spoke during the drive home.

The silence was different now.

Before, he thought he was hiding something.

Now, he knew I was searching.

The second we walked inside our house, he turned toward me.

“Who texted you?””

I removed my coat.

“I don’t know.””

“Did they say anything?””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re lying.””

I looked at him.

The accusation was almost unbelievable.

“You think I’m lying?””

He looked away.

“That’s not what I meant.””

“Yes, it is.””

“Emily, I’m just trying to understand.””

I almost smiled.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“You keep saying that.””

“Saying what?””

“That you’re trying to understand.””

I stepped closer.

“But you never ask what you did to me.””

His face changed.

For a second, I saw something.

Regret.

Maybe.

Or maybe discomfort.

“Emily…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

But I kept going.

“I spent ten years believing my husband was my safest place.””

He looked down.

“And yesterday I watched you hold another woman’s hand.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

I stared at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

He sighed.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes?””

“Yes.””

“How many?””

Silence.

That was his answer.

I walked upstairs before he could respond.

The bedroom felt unfamiliar.

Our bedroom.

The place where we had whispered dreams.

The place where he had promised me forever.

I opened my laptop.

Then I searched for Claire Bennett.

There were several results.

A professional profile.

An old company announcement.

A few mentions of her work.

Then I found something.

A news article.

Not about Daniel.

Not directly.

But about the company.

A former employee had filed a complaint regarding workplace misconduct.

The article did not name the person involved.

But the date matched.

Three years ago.

My hands went cold.

Then another message appeared.

Same unknown number.

*I know Margaret told you about me.*

I froze.

How did she know?

A second message followed.

*Please don’t trust Daniel’s version of what happened.*

I stared at the screen.

Then typed:

*Who are you?*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Someone who made the mistake of believing him before you did.*

I looked at the words.

My heartbeat grew louder.

Then the phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman spoke.

Her voice was quiet.

Almost afraid.

“Emily?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

I sat down slowly.

“Why are you contacting me?””

A shaky breath came through the phone.

“Because I saw the photo.””

“What photo?””

“The one from the mall.””

I didn’t speak.

Claire continued.

“I knew Daniel was still capable of hurting people. I just didn’t think he would be careless enough to get caught.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who are you to him?””

A long pause.

Then:

“I was the woman everyone blamed.””

The room felt smaller.

“What does that mean?””

“Three years ago, Daniel told people I misunderstood him.””

Her voice cracked slightly.

“He told everyone I was obsessed with him.””

I gripped the phone.

“But you weren’t?””

“No.””

Another pause.

“Emily, I need you to listen carefully.””

The seriousness in her voice made me sit straighter.

“Daniel didn’t start with Vanessa.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Vanessa isn’t his first secret.””

I looked toward the closed bedroom door.

Downstairs, I could hear Daniel moving around.

Living his normal life.

The life he thought I still believed in.

Claire lowered her voice.

“He has been doing this for years.””

I whispered:

“How many?””

There was silence.

Then she answered.

“Emily…”

Her voice trembled.

“Before Vanessa, there was me.””

I closed my eyes.

Because suddenly the woman in the charcoal coat wasn’t the beginning.

May you like

She was just the latest chapter.

And I was about to discover how long Daniel’s story had been going on without me.
