Chapter 8: The Father Behind the Lie
For a moment, nobody breathed.
Not me.
Not Claire.
Not Vanessa.
Not even Robert.
The words on the paper seemed impossible.
*He is Noah’s father.*
I read them again.
And again.
Waiting for the ink to rearrange itself.
Waiting for my father’s handwriting to become something else.
It didn’t.
Robert Hayes.
The man who had sat at my family’s dinner table.
The man who had carried me on his shoulders when I was a child.
The man who had stood beside my father through decades of business.
The man who had comforted me after my father died.
He was Noah’s father.
My hands trembled.
“Is this true?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Robert.
“Is this true?””
His expression remained calm.
Too calm.
Then he slowly smiled.
Not the warm smile I remembered.
Not the one from childhood.
A stranger’s smile.
“You finally found out.””
My stomach twisted.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“You knew all these years?””
“Yes.””
The anger that rose inside me was almost impossible to control.
“You knew I had a brother.””
“Yes.””
“You knew where he was?””
Robert looked away.
“That’s complicated.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Complicated?””
My voice echoed through the basement.
“My entire life was a lie.””
Robert’s eyes hardened.
“Your father made choices.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“You made choices.””
The room became tense.
Daniel moved slightly closer to me.
Robert noticed.
“Careful, Ethan.””
“Careful?””
“Yes.””
His voice became colder.
“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””
I looked at Claire.
Then Vanessa.
Then back at Robert.
“Actually, I think I finally do.””
Robert sighed.
“You’re just like your father.””
I hated hearing those words from him.
Because once, they would have meant something good.
Now they felt like an insult.
“What happened to Noah?””
Robert didn’t answer.
“Where is my brother?””
Still nothing.
I walked closer.
“What did you do to him?””
Robert’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Enough to confirm my worst fear.
Claire spoke quietly.
“He didn’t kill Noah.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“He couldn’t.””
Robert turned toward her.
“Don’t.””
Claire ignored him.
“He didn’t kill Noah because Noah was the one thing your father had that Robert couldn’t take away.””
Robert’s jaw tightened.
“Claire.””
“No more lies.””
Her voice shook.
“You destroyed enough lives.””
I looked between them.
“You two know where Noah is.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
“Tell me.””
Robert laughed quietly.
“You think knowing the truth will fix anything?””
I turned toward him.
“My brother disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“My father died.””
“Yes.””
“My daughter was threatened.””
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
A flicker of guilt.
And that made me angrier.
“You had something to do with tonight.””
Robert didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
He just looked tired.
“Tonight was never supposed to involve Lily.””
My entire body went cold.
“Don’t say her name.””
“I’m saying the truth.””
“No.””
My voice lowered.
“You don’t get to use her name.””
Robert looked at the floor.
“Your father made the same mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“Choosing family over everything else.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he should have given me what I wanted.””
“And what was that?””
Robert looked around the basement.
“All of this.””
The files.
The evidence.
The secrets.
“You wanted his work.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I wanted what he promised me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Robert’s face hardened.
“Your father and I built everything together.””
I said nothing.
“He had the vision. I had the connections. We were supposed to be partners.””
“You were.””
“Not enough.””
His voice became bitter.
“He had the name. The respect. The family legacy.””
He pointed toward me.
“Then you were born.””
I froze.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Your father changed after you came into his life.””
I felt sick.
“You hated me?””
“No.””
A pause.
“I hated what you represented.””
Claire looked disgusted.
“Robert…”
He continued.
“He had something worth protecting.””
The words were quiet.
Almost sad.
“And I didn’t.””
Nobody spoke.
For a moment, I saw the truth.
Not a monster.
Not a cartoon villain.
A man who had allowed resentment to rot him from the inside.
And somehow, that made it worse.
Because monsters were easy to understand.
People like Robert were not.
“Where is Noah?””
Robert looked at me.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
He reached into his coat.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
But Robert only pulled out a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
A young man.
Older now.
Maybe in his twenties.
Dark hair.
The same eyes.
My brother.
Alive.
My breath caught.
“No.””
Claire whispered:
“That’s Noah.””
I picked up the photograph.
My fingers touched the edge.
A person I had never met.
A piece of my family erased from my life.
“Where is he?””
Robert watched me carefully.
“He’s been closer than you think.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, the basement door slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood at the entrance.
A young man.
Tall.
Dark hair.
Frozen expression.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Claire covered her mouth.
“Noah…”
The young man looked at me.
Not Robert.
Not Claire.
Me.
My brother.
The person I had spent my entire life not knowing existed.
“You’re Ethan.””
I couldn’t speak.
Finally, I managed:
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“I wondered if I’d ever meet you.””
My eyes burned.
“You’re alive.””
A small, painful smile appeared.
“Yes.””
I looked at Robert.
Then back at Noah.
“You knew?””
Noah’s expression changed.
“Knew what?””
“That I existed.””
Silence.
Then he looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“You knew about me?””
“Yes.””
“And you never came?””
His face tightened.
“I tried.””
The words came quietly.
“More than once.””
I didn’t understand.
“Then why?””
Noah looked at Robert.
And suddenly, I understood.
Fear.
Not distance.
Not anger.
Fear.
“What did he do?””
Noah didn’t answer.
Robert did.
“He protected him.””
Everyone looked at Robert.
He continued:
“After your father died, there were people looking for Noah.””
“People like you?””
His expression hardened.
“People worse than me.””
I shook my head.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Robert looked at me.
“But you should.””
He pointed toward the files.
“Because your father knew the truth.””
I opened my mouth.
Then stopped.
Because another sound interrupted us.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
It wasn’t mine.
It wasn’t Daniel’s.
It was Noah’s.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What is it?”” Claire asked.
Noah didn’t answer.
He slowly turned the phone around.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Only six words.
*They found Lily. Run now.*
My blood turned cold.
I looked upstairs.
Where my daughter had been waiting.
Where the security team was supposed to be protecting her.
“Lily.””
I moved instantly.
But Noah grabbed my arm.
“Wait.””
I turned on him.
“My daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then let go.””
His grip tightened.
“Ethan, listen.””
“What?””
His eyes were filled with fear.
“The person who sent that message…”
He looked toward Robert.
Then toward the basement door.
“…is not outside.””
A chill went through me.
“What are you saying?””
May you like
Noah whispered:
“They’re already inside the house.””
