Chapter 7: The Man Who Knew My Son's Future

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Caleb sitting on the camping cot, his trembling hands wrapped around a paper cup, apologizing for being cold.

And every time I remembered Marissa's final words, I felt a new question take shape.

You should ask Derek what he thinks is going to happen to Caleb.

By morning, I had stopped trying to find an innocent explanation for everything.

I still didn't know who Derek was or how deeply he was involved.

But I knew my wife had been discussing my son's future with someone who apparently understood the plan better than I did.

At 7:10 a.m., I went upstairs to check on Caleb.

He was awake, sitting against the headboard with his laptop open.

His school portal was displaying a list of assignments he'd missed.

When I entered, he quickly minimized the screen.

"Everything okay, buddy?""

"Yeah.""

I sat beside him.

"You're allowed to tell me when things aren't okay.""

He looked at the computer.

"I have to explain why I missed some assignments.""

"We'll contact your school together.""

He nodded, but his expression remained troubled.

After a moment, he asked, "Dad, are we moving?""

I stared at him.

"Who told you that?""

"Nobody exactly.""

He rubbed his fingers together.

"I heard Marissa talking about the basement. And she said the room might be rented out for a long time.""

I took a slow breath.

"We aren't making any decisions about moving you anywhere without discussing it properly. You aren't going back to the garage, and nobody is taking your bedroom away from you while we sort this out.""

He looked at me as if he desperately wanted to believe that promise.

"Even if Marissa gets mad?""

"Even then.""

He nodded slowly.

Then he asked the question that made me realize how much damage had already been done.

"Would it be easier if I stayed somewhere else for a while?""

I turned toward him.

"Why would you think that?""

"Because everybody keeps fighting about me.""

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"Caleb, listen carefully. The adults are responsible for the decisions we're making. You are not responsible for managing our feelings or fixing our disagreements.""

He stared at the blanket.

"I just want things to be normal.""

I put an arm around his shoulders.

"I know, buddy.""

For several minutes, we sat quietly.

Then I asked whether he remembered hearing Marissa mention Derek.

His expression changed.

"A man named Derek?""

"Yes.""

Caleb nodded.

"He called once while I was still in my room.""

"What happened?""

"Marissa told me to go downstairs. Then she closed the door.""

"Did you hear anything else?""

He hesitated.

"She said something about the pictures and the basement.""

My stomach tightened.

"What pictures?""

"The ones of my room.""

I waited.

"She said the room looked better without my stuff in it. Then Derek asked whether I'd been moved yet.""

I stared at my son.

"What did Marissa say?""

"She said I was staying in the garage until everything was ready.""

I closed my eyes for a moment.

The rental listing.

The photographs.

The basement estimate.

The message about my return date.

They were beginning to form a pattern, but I still needed evidence of what Derek had actually done.

I wasn't going to accuse someone based on fragments of overheard conversations.

"Thank you for telling me," I said.

Caleb nodded.

Then he asked, "Are you going to call him?""

"I might.""

"Please don't let him make me move.""

I took his hand.

"I won't agree to anything that puts you at risk or takes away your home without proper consideration.""

He seemed reassured by that answer.

I left him to finish his schoolwork and went downstairs.

Marissa had already left for an appointment.

She hadn't said where she was going.

On the kitchen counter, I found a piece of paper with a phone number written beneath the name Derek.

It appeared to be a note she'd made while discussing the rental arrangements.

I didn't take it.

Instead, I returned to the home office and reviewed the documents I'd collected.

The renovation estimate included a company name and contact information.

I called the company and asked whether Derek had been involved in arranging the proposed basement conversion.

The receptionist checked the file.

"Yes," she said.

"Derek spoke with our estimator about the project.""

"Was he listed as the homeowner?""

"No. He was listed as a contact person for Mrs. Brooks.""

"Did he provide authorization for the work?""

"No work was authorized. We were waiting for confirmation from the property owners before proceeding.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

That was useful information, but it didn't establish why Derek was involved.

I then contacted the rental platform to ask whether the listing had been paused.

The representative confirmed that the review was underway and that the platform had recorded my objection.

I requested copies of the booking information that I was entitled to receive as a property owner.

Again, I avoided making accusations.

I wanted records, not assumptions.

Around noon, Marissa returned.

She walked into the kitchen, saw me at the table with the paperwork, and immediately stiffened.

"You're still doing this?""

"I'm trying to understand what happened.""

"You've made your point.""

"No, Marissa. I haven't.""

She put her handbag on the counter.

"What do you want from me?""

"The truth about Derek.""

She looked toward the window.

"He helped me with the rental.""

"How long have you known him?""

"Several months.""

"Why didn't you mention him?""

"Because he wasn't important.""

"Apparently, he knew when I was supposed to be away, he was involved in the basement proposal, and he knew Caleb was being moved out of his bedroom.""

Her face tightened.

"You don't know what he knew.""

"Then tell me.""

She walked to the sink and turned on the faucet.

For a few seconds, she simply watched the water run.

Then she said, "Derek has experience with short-term rentals. He helped me set up the listing and calculate the rates.""

"Did he know you were putting Caleb in the garage?""

"He knew the bedroom needed to be available.""

"That's not an answer.""

She shut off the faucet.

"I told him Caleb had somewhere else to sleep.""

"Where?""

"The garage.""

I stared at her.

"And he accepted that?""

"He isn't responsible for our family decisions.""

"No. But he was helping you make money from a room you knew your son needed.""

She turned toward me.

"You make everything sound sinister.""

"Then explain why he was asking what would happen now that I'd returned early.""

She said nothing.

I leaned forward.

"Marissa, I need to know whether this was simply about renting a bedroom or whether you and Derek were planning something more permanent.""

Her expression changed.

"Why are you bringing him into our marriage?""

"Because you brought him into our household decisions.""

She looked away.

Then, quietly, she said, "He thought the basement would be a better arrangement.""

"For whom?""

"For everyone.""

I stared at her.

"How?""

"Caleb would have his own space. Noah could have the upstairs room. We could keep renting the suite. The extra income would help with expenses.""

I tried to process what she'd just said.

"You planned to move Caleb into an unfinished basement so you could rent out his bedroom?""

"It wouldn't remain unfinished.""

"And you didn't think I should know?""

"I was going to tell you when everything was ready.""

I shook my head.

"You were going to tell me after you'd already made the decision.""

She folded her arms.

"You would have refused.""

"Yes.""

Her eyes flashed.

"Exactly.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

She had finally admitted what I'd suspected.

She hadn't kept the plan secret because it was temporary.

She'd kept it secret because she knew I wouldn't consent.

"Marissa, Caleb is thirteen. He deserves a proper bedroom, a safe place to sleep, and a voice in decisions that affect his life.""

"He has a bedroom.""

"Which you rented to strangers.""

"Temporarily.""

"And you planned to move him downstairs permanently.""

"You're twisting everything.""

I looked at her.

"Did you discuss this plan with Derek before you discussed it with me?""

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

I gathered the paperwork and placed it in a folder.

"I'm going to arrange an independent review of the property and the finances. I'm also going to make sure the rental situation is resolved before another guest arrives.""

Her face hardened.

"You can't shut down everything I've worked for.""

"I'm not trying to destroy anything. I'm trying to stop decisions that put our children in the middle of a situation they didn't create.""

She walked toward the stairs.

Then she turned back.

"You should know something about Derek before you decide he's the villain.""

I waited.

"He has been helping me because you haven't.""

I felt the accusation land.

But I also understood why she was using it.

If she could make this about my absences, perhaps she wouldn't have to answer for what she'd done during them.

"I accept that I haven't always been home as much as I should have been," I said.

"I regret that. But my work schedule didn't force you to put Caleb in the garage.""

She stared at me.

For the first time, she seemed to have no prepared response.

Then she climbed the stairs.

I remained at the table, thinking about the basement proposal.

I needed to speak to Derek directly, but I wasn't going to do it impulsively.

I contacted a local attorney and arranged a consultation to understand my rights and responsibilities regarding the jointly owned property, the rental listing, and the children's living arrangements.

The attorney advised me to preserve the relevant records, avoid making threats, and keep the children's immediate safety separate from the financial dispute.

That was exactly what I intended to do.

Later that afternoon, the rental platform sent me a notification confirming that the listing had been temporarily suspended while the authorization issue was reviewed.

I printed the notice.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

Noah stood in the office doorway.

"Mr. Nathan?""

"Come in, buddy.""

He entered slowly.

"Is Caleb going to be okay?""

"Yes. He's resting, and we're making sure he has everything he needs.""

Noah looked at the papers on my desk.

"Are you talking to Derek?""

I turned toward him.

"Do you know him?""

He nodded.

"He came to the house once.""

"When?""

"A few weeks ago.""

"What did he do?""

"He looked at Caleb's room and took pictures.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did he say why?""

Noah shook his head.

"Mom told me to stay out of the way. Then Derek asked whether the basement door opened from the outside.""

I stared at him.

"The outside?""

Noah nodded.

"He said something about making the downstairs area separate.""

I felt a cold sensation move through me.

A separate entrance.

The basement conversion estimate.

The proposed long-term arrangement.

I thanked Noah for telling me and asked whether he'd heard anything else.

He hesitated.

Then he said, "Derek told Mom that once the basement was finished, Caleb wouldn't have to be part of the rental business anymore.""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"I don't know.""

Noah looked down.

"But Mom said it would be easier if Caleb stopped thinking the house belonged to him.""

For a moment, I couldn't find my voice.

My son had lived in this house for years.

He'd lost his mother, watched his father rebuild a life, and tried to accept a new family.

Now he'd been told that the place he'd called home no longer belonged to him in the way he'd believed.

I looked at Noah.

"Did Derek say anything else?""

He nodded slowly.

"He said the next step depended on you being away long enough.""

My blood ran cold.

"Being away?""

Noah nodded.

"He said they needed time to get everything ready before you came home.""

I sat back in my chair.

I had returned two days early.

And apparently, that had disrupted a plan involving more than a bedroom rental.

I looked at the folder on my desk.

The listing.

The renovation estimate.

The notes.

The message.

The plumber's report.

I had facts.

I had questions.

And now I had two children who were afraid of what would happen if they told the truth.

I stood and walked to the office window.

Outside, the afternoon sun fell across the driveway.

My car sat where I'd parked it the night I came home early.

I'd thought I was returning to my family.

Instead, I'd walked into a situation that had been developing while I was gone.

I turned back toward Noah.

"Thank you for telling me.""

He nodded.

Then he asked, "Can I tell you something else?""

"Of course.""

He took a breath.

"Mom said that after the next booking, everything would be different.""

I looked at him.

"What did she mean?""

Noah shook his head.

"I don't know. But she said Derek had already taken care of the paperwork.""

I went completely still.

"What paperwork?""

He looked frightened.

"I don't know, Mr. Nathan. I just heard her say it.""

I waited until he returned upstairs before I called the attorney again.

I explained what Noah had reported and asked what kinds of property or rental documents might require immediate review.

The attorney advised me to obtain copies of any relevant records through proper channels and to avoid assuming that an informal conversation meant a legal document existed.

I agreed.

I wasn't going to turn a child's uncertain memory into a conclusion.

But I was no longer willing to wait for Marissa to volunteer information.

That evening, I asked her directly whether any documents had been signed concerning the basement, the rental business, or Caleb's living arrangements.

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she said, "There are things you don't understand.""

"Then explain them.""

She shook her head.

"Not tonight.""

I stood.

"Marissa, I need to know whether you've made any commitments involving our home without my consent.""

She looked away.

And in the silence that followed, I understood that the next conversation might change everything.

May you like

Because somewhere in the house, there was a document she didn't want me to see.

And Derek appeared to know exactly where it was.
