Chapter 4: The Name I Was Never Supposed to Hear

The name on my phone belonged to someone who had been gone from my life for six years.

Someone I had buried in my mind.

Someone Vanessa told me to forget.

*Ethan Cole.*

My old friend.

My former business partner.

And, according to Vanessa, the person who had betrayed me.

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

*Daniel, you need to know the truth about Noah’s father.*

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t breathe.

Because there were only two explanations.

Either Ethan had somehow found a way to contact me after years of silence…

or Vanessa had been lying about him all this time.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa’s voice cut through the room.

I looked up.

She wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at the phone.

Like she already knew.

“Ethan.””

The color drained from her face.

For the first time since I walked into that house, Vanessa looked completely exposed.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Afraid.

“No.””

The word came out barely above a whisper.

I held the phone up.

“You know what this is about?””

She shook her head too quickly.

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“I said no.””

“You knew he would contact me.””

Her eyes flashed.

“Daniel, don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Dig up something that should stay buried.””

I stared at her.

“Something?””

She looked toward the stairs.

Toward where Noah was standing behind me.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Not in front of the kids.””

I almost laughed.

Not in front of the kids.

That was her concern.

Not the locked bathroom.

Not the lies.

Not the fear in their eyes.

The timing.

I walked into the kitchen and closed the doorway behind me.

“Tell me the truth.””

“There is nothing to tell.””

“Then why did Ethan say I need to know the truth about Noah’s father?””

Her face tightened.

“Because he wants to hurt us.””

“Us?””

“Yes.””

“You haven’t said his name in years.””

“Because he’s dangerous.””

I studied her.

“Dangerous how?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Vanessa.””

She sat down slowly.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

My stomach dropped.

“Find out what?””

She rubbed her hands together.

A habit she had whenever she was scared.

“I made mistakes.””

The words felt too small.

Too soft.

A person didn’t make a mistake by locking a child in a bathroom.

A person didn’t make a mistake by hiding something for years.

“What kind of mistakes?””

She looked at me.

“I was confused.””

I waited.

She looked away.

“Before we got married…”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Before we got married, what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was with Ethan.””

The room went silent.

I knew immediately.

Before she said another word.

Before she explained.

Before she tried to soften it.

Because suddenly every strange moment from the past six years rearranged itself.

The secrets.

The phone calls.

The way she hated hearing Ethan’s name.

The way she always got tense whenever someone mentioned old friends.

“You cheated on me.””

She shook her head.

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Don’t.””

My voice was quiet.

And somehow that made it worse.

“Don’t give me a version where I’m supposed to understand.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When were you going to tell me?””

“I don’t know.””

“Exactly.””

She looked down.

I walked away from the counter.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I was angry.

Because I was trying to process how many years of my life had been built on something false.

“Noah.””

I said his name.

And suddenly everything hurt differently.

“What does this have to do with Noah?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

“What does this have to do with our son?””

The silence was enough.

I stepped back.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

“I didn’t know until after he was born.””

The air left my lungs.

“You’re saying…”

She nodded slowly.

“Ethan might be his biological father.””

The world narrowed.

The kitchen disappeared.

All I could hear was my own heartbeat.

I thought about every birthday.

Every scraped knee.

Every bedtime story.

Every time Noah ran into my arms shouting, “Daddy!””

I thought about teaching him to ride a bike.

Holding him when he had nightmares.

The first time he called me his hero.

And now Vanessa was telling me there was a possibility that none of it belonged to me.

“Does Noah know?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

“Good.””

The word came out immediately.

Because whatever else happened, he was still five.

He was still a child.

He didn’t need adult secrets placed on his shoulders.

I turned away.

“Why did Ethan leave?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because I told him to.””

“Why?””

“Because I chose you.””

I looked back at her.

“You chose me?””

“Yes.””

“After hiding the truth?””

She started crying.

“I was scared.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I looked toward the living room.

At the two children who had spent the night afraid.

“You want to talk about fair?””

She covered her face.

“I thought everything would be okay.””

“Everything?””

“You were happy.””

I stared.

“You mean I was unaware.””

She didn’t answer.

The front door suddenly opened.

Both of us froze.

I turned.

Sophie stood there holding the door handle.

Behind her was Noah.

They had heard.

I didn’t know how much.

But they had heard something.

“Daddy?””

I immediately moved toward them.

“What are you doing up?””

Sophie looked confused.

“Why did Mommy say Noah might leave?””

I stopped.

Vanessa went pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You told them?””

“I didn’t.””

But Noah was looking at me.

His face had changed.

The fear was different now.

Not fear of being locked away.

Fear of losing me.

“Daddy…”

I crouched down.

“Hey.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Am I not your son anymore?””

The question destroyed something inside me.

I grabbed his shoulders gently.

“Listen to me.””

He sniffed.

“Are you my son?””

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“Yes.””

“But…”

“No.””

I held his face.

“There is no but.””

His tears rolled down.

“I’m your dad.””

“But Mommy said—”

“I don’t care what anyone said.””

My voice cracked.

“You are my son.””

He threw his arms around me.

And I held him.

Because in that moment, I understood something.

Blood could explain where a person came from.

But it didn’t explain who stayed.

Who showed up.

Who sat through nightmares.

Who held a tiny hand in the hospital.

Who came running when a child whispered his name.

Behind me, Vanessa cried quietly.

But I couldn’t look at her.

Not yet.

Because my phone buzzed again.

Another message from Ethan.

I opened it.

This time, there was a photo attached.

A hospital document.

My hands went cold as I zoomed in.

The date.

The signatures.

The names.

At the bottom was a line that made my heart stop.

Because Ethan hadn’t just claimed to be Noah’s father.

He claimed he had proof.

And then another message appeared beneath the photo.

*“Daniel, Vanessa didn’t tell you the worst part.””*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then Ethan’s next words appeared.

*“Noah was never the only child she was hiding from you.””*
