Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Ticket

Terrence slipped his phone into his pocket.

Too quickly.

Vanessa noticed.

“So now we're hiding phone calls?””

“I'm not hiding anything.””

“Then show me who called.””

“No.””

The answer came so sharply that even Madison flinched.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You've spent the entire morning telling us nothing is wrong. You lied about Avery's seat. You lied to Claire.

You apparently arranged this trip without telling me the truth. And now you won't even show me your phone?””

Terrence looked around.

“Do you want to have this conversation in front of the entire airport?””

“No,” Vanessa replied.

“I wanted to have it at home, when I asked you about Avery's reservation last night. You told me everything was fine.””

Avery's head lifted.

“Last night?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“I asked your father whether the airline had confirmed the arrangements.””

“What did he say?””

“He said your booking was no longer active.””

Avery felt cold.

“But I saw the ticket on his laptop.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What ticket?””

“My ticket. Dad showed it to me when we were planning the trip.””

Terrence interrupted.

“That was before the arrangements changed.””

“When did they change?”” Avery asked.

“Yesterday.””

“Before or after you told me to pack my birthday presents?””

His jaw tightened.

“Stop asking the same questions.””

“I'm asking because you keep giving me different answers!””

Daniel glanced at the gate agent.

The agent quietly requested assistance from a supervisor, recognizing that this was no longer a simple booking discrepancy.

Claire stood beside her two suitcases, looking increasingly uncomfortable.

“I really didn't know this would happen,” she said.

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Then tell us exactly what Terrence told you.””

Claire hesitated.

“He said he wanted to take me on a trip.””

Vanessa's face went blank.

Madison stared at her father.

Avery didn't understand at first.

Then she saw the way Vanessa's fingers tightened around her handbag.

“You wanted to take her on a trip?”” Vanessa repeated.

Terrence shook his head.

“That's not what she means.””

Claire looked between them.

“I mean, he invited me to join the family vacation.””

“The family vacation?”” Vanessa asked.

“Yes.””

Claire paused.

“He said it was a celebration for his birthday.””

Terrence's expression hardened.

“Claire, stop talking.””

She stared at him.

“Why? You told me your wife was aware of everything.””

Vanessa's lips parted, but no words came out.

Avery looked at her mother.

For the first time that morning, Vanessa seemed as lost as Avery felt.

There were secrets inside their family that Avery had never been allowed to see.

And the adults were beginning to realize that those secrets had collided in the middle of an airport.

Madison stepped closer to her father.

“Dad, is Claire the reason Avery isn't going?””

Terrence rubbed his forehead.

“This is getting ridiculous.””

“That's not an answer.””

“You don't understand the situation.””

“Then explain it!””

He turned toward Madison.

“You're my daughter. I expect you to trust me.””

Madison's expression changed.

“Trust you to do what? Give a twelve-year-old's birthday seat to someone she doesn't even know?””

Claire flinched.

Terrence's face reddened.

“Enough!””

His shout silenced the surrounding conversation for a moment.

Then a child began crying somewhere behind them.

The ordinary sounds of the airport gradually returned, but their little group remained trapped in a tension that seemed to grow with every passing second.

Daniel approached with the airline supervisor.

“Mr. Terrence, we need to clarify the authorization for this transfer.””

“I've already explained it.””

“Unfortunately, the explanation doesn't match the transaction history.””

Terrence stared at him.

“What transaction history?””

The supervisor held a tablet.

“Your daughter's passenger details were modified through the booking account associated with your reservation. The change was made yesterday afternoon.””

Vanessa slowly turned toward her husband.

“You used your account?””

Terrence didn't answer.

The supervisor continued.

“The original passenger was removed from the active itinerary, and the seat was reassigned to Ms. Bennett.””

Claire looked stunned.

“So he did transfer it.””

The supervisor nodded.

“That's what the record indicates.””

Terrence lifted his chin.

“I paid for the trip. I am allowed to make changes to my family's reservations.””

“Changes can be made according to the applicable fare rules,” the supervisor replied.

“However, we still need to establish the correct passenger authorization and resolve the discrepancy involving the minor traveler.””

“She's not traveling.””

Avery's eyes filled again.

He had said it so casually.

As if her place on the plane had never been real.

As if she were a bag that could be left behind when the car became too crowded.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Then why didn't you tell her that before today?””

Terrence stared at his wife.

“I was going to.””

“When? After she watched us board?””

“I intended to explain everything.””

“You had weeks!””

Claire lowered her eyes.

Madison turned away from her father.

And Avery, who had been waiting all morning for someone to defend her, finally understood something painful.

Her father hadn't made one terrible decision at the airport.

He had made dozens of decisions over several weeks.

Each time, he had chosen secrecy over honesty.

Each time, he had convinced himself that Avery would eventually accept whatever he decided.

But the supervisor wasn't finished.

“There is another issue,” she said.

Terrence's expression tightened.

“What now?””

“The passenger change was submitted under your account, but the notes attached to the original reservation indicate that the minor passenger was expected to travel with the family.””

“So?””

“So we need to understand why the original itinerary was altered without the accompanying arrangements being properly updated.””

Terrence glanced at Avery.

“Because she isn't coming.””

“Sir, I understand your position. But the reservation was not simply canceled. A replacement passenger was entered.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

There it was again.

The word nobody could explain away.

Replacement.

Avery looked at Claire.

“Did you know you were taking my seat?””

Claire shook her head.

“I knew I was joining the trip. I didn't know your ticket was still attached to the original booking.””

“But you knew I wasn't going.””

“Yes.””

“Did you ask why?””

Claire looked down.

“I asked whether everything was okay at home.””

“And what did Dad say?””

Claire took a breath.

“He said you had been difficult lately. He said you were staying with your grandmother because of a family disagreement.””

Avery stared at her father.

“That's what you told her?””

Terrence didn't respond.

“He told me there was nothing to worry about,” Claire continued.

“He said your grandmother had agreed to take you, and that you understood the change.””

Avery's voice became very small.

“I didn't understand anything.””

Claire's expression crumpled.

“I know that now.””

Vanessa looked at her husband with open disbelief.

“You made her believe Avery agreed to this?””

“I said she understood the arrangements.””

“You told her our daughter agreed to be abandoned at the airport?””

Terrence's eyes flashed.

“Don't twist my words.””

Vanessa stepped back as though he had struck her.

For a moment, she looked ready to cry.

Then she straightened.

“Show me your phone.””

“No.””

“Terrence, I am asking you one last time.””

He held her gaze.

Then he said something that made Madison gasp.

“You have no idea what Avery has been doing behind our backs.””

Avery felt the blood drain from her face.

“What?””

Terrence turned toward her.

“You wanted the truth? Fine. Maybe you should tell your mother what you found.””

Vanessa looked at Avery.

“What is he talking about?””

Avery shook her head.

“I don't know.””

But she did know one thing.

She knew the papers she had found in her father's study.

She knew the name written on the envelope.

She knew why Terrence had snatched the documents from her hands when she had asked about them.

And she knew why, the following morning, he had suddenly announced that the birthday trip had changed.

Madison stepped toward her.

“Avery, what did you find?””

Avery looked at her sister.

Then at her mother.

“I found some papers in Dad's office.””

Terrence's face changed instantly.

“That's enough.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What papers?””

Avery swallowed.

“There was a letter with my name on it. And another name I didn't recognize.””

Terrence reached for her backpack.

Avery recoiled.

“Give me that.””

“No!””

“Avery, give it to me!””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Sir, please step back.””

Terrence stopped, breathing hard.

Vanessa moved toward Avery and placed an arm around her shoulders.

“Don't touch her.””

He looked at his wife in disbelief.

“You're taking her side without knowing what she did?””

“She's twelve years old!””

“And she has no idea what she's interfering with!””

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Silence fell.

Vanessa slowly removed her arm from Avery's shoulders and looked directly at Terrence.

“What exactly is our daughter interfering with?””

Terrence's phone vibrated again.

This time, he didn't reach for it.

The screen lit up through the fabric of his pocket, and a second message appeared.

Claire noticed the movement.

“Terrence,” she whispered, “who keeps contacting you?””

He ignored her.

But Avery saw the fear in his eyes.

She had seen that fear once before, when she had discovered the envelope in his study.

Back then, she had believed it was because she had broken a rule by entering his office.

Now she wondered whether it had been because she had discovered something that could change their family forever.

Vanessa held out her hand.

“Give me the phone.””

Terrence shook his head.

“No.””

“Then tell me what is in those papers.””

He stared at her.

Then, slowly, he turned toward Avery.

“You want to know why you aren't going on this trip?””

Avery nodded, barely breathing.

“Because,” he said, “if you tell your mother what you found, everything we've built could fall apart.””

Vanessa went completely still.

“What have you done, Terrence?””

May you like

He didn't answer.

And Avery realized that the secret in the envelope was bigger than the birthday trip, bigger than Claire, and possibly bigger than the entire family.
