Chapter 3: The Message Behind Her Smile

```text My wife looked me straight in the eyes and warned, “You have absolutely no idea what you're risking.””
For the first time in our five-year marriage, I believed her.
The birthday cake lay in pieces across the marble floor.
White frosting covered the tablecloths.
Guests whispered beneath the crystal chandeliers, pretending not to stare at Jessica and me.
My mother stood beside me, wrapped in my jacket, her trembling hands clasped together.
She should have been celebrating a birthday.
Instead, she was wondering whether she had ruined her son's marriage by giving his wife a bouquet of handmade roses.
“I'm sorry, Daniel,” she whispered as we approached the ballroom doors.
I stopped walking.
“Mom, what are you apologizing for?””
“For causing trouble at Jessica's party.””
I felt something tighten in my chest.
“You didn't cause any trouble.””
“But she was so angry.””
I took both her hands.
“She was angry because I finally stopped letting her treat you that way.””
Mom looked at me with tired, worried eyes.
Then she asked the question I wasn't prepared to answer.
“Has she always disliked me this much?””
I couldn't lie to her.
Not anymore.
Behind us, Jessica was demanding that the guests stay while the staff cleaned up the ruined cake.
Her voice had lost its sweetness.
The woman who had smiled for photographs all evening was now ordering people around as though the entire ballroom belonged to her.
Vanessa stood beside her, staring at something on Jessica's phone.
Then Jessica noticed me watching.
She quickly locked the screen.
That tiny movement bothered me more than it should have.
“Mom, wait here for a second,” I said.
I walked back toward Jessica.
“What are you hiding?””
She gave me an offended look.
“Excuse me?””
“You sent a message right after threatening me. Vanessa read it, and suddenly she looked terrified.””
Jessica laughed.
“You're imagining things because you made a fool of yourself.””
“Then show me the message.””
“Absolutely not.””
Her answer came too quickly.
I lowered my voice.
“Why did you invite my mother tonight when you spent weeks telling me you didn't want her here?””
Jessica's smile disappeared.
“Because you wouldn't stop insisting.””
“That doesn't explain why you're acting like her being here was part of some plan.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she leaned toward me.
“You should have thought about your future before destroying my birthday.””
“My future?””
She glanced toward my mother.
“Yes, Daniel. Your future. The comfortable life you enjoy. The things you take for granted.””
I stared at her.
I had worked hard for everything I owned.
I had never expected Jessica to provide for me.
But the way she spoke made it sound as though my entire life depended on her permission.
Before I could respond, Vanessa approached us.
“Jessica, can we talk privately?””
“Not now.””
“It's important.””
Jessica shot her a warning look.
Vanessa hesitated, then glanced at me.
“I think Daniel deserves to know what's happening.””
Jessica grabbed her arm.
“I said not now.””
The two women stared at each other.
Something passed between them that I couldn't understand.
Then Vanessa pulled free.
“I can't keep pretending this is normal.””
Jessica's face hardened.
“Be very careful.””
Vanessa looked at me again.
“Daniel, whatever happens tonight, don't sign anything she gives you.””
My stomach dropped.
“What paperwork?””
Jessica stepped between us.
“Vanessa has had too much champagne. We're done here.””
But Vanessa shook her head.
“No. You told me this would be handled before the party ended.””
Jessica went completely still.
I looked from one woman to the other.
“What would be handled?””
Neither answered.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent me a photograph.
It showed a document spread across a desk, with my name clearly visible near the bottom.
Beneath the photograph was a short message.
“Ask your wife what she planned to make you sign tonight.””
I read it twice.
Then I looked up at Jessica.
For the first time, she wasn't smiling.
She was staring at my phone as though the person who sent that message had just destroyed something far more important than her birthday cake.
And when I asked her what the document was, she reached for my phone.
