Chapter 4: The Man Buried Beneath the House

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't move.
Daniel's voice continued through the phone.
“Marcus? Are you still there?””
He stared at Eleanor.
Her face had gone completely white. One hand gripped the kitchen counter while the other covered her mouth.
“Eleanor,” Marcus whispered.
“What did you mean when you said they found him?””
She shook her head.
“Not here. Please.””
Marcus turned toward the phone.
“Daniel, send me everything you have about the discovery. I want the police report, the property search warrant, and the names of everyone who entered that house.””
“I'll have my investigator handle it.””
“And Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“Don't let Vanessa's attorneys get access to anything connected to Arthur Bell.””
“I'll do my best.””
Marcus ended the call.
He slowly approached his aunt.
“Tell me what you know.””
Eleanor lowered herself into a chair.
For a moment, she looked older than he had ever seen her.
“Arthur came to me three days before your father's funeral,” she began.
“He was terrified. He told me Robert had discovered something enormous, something involving the company, the trust, and several people he considered family.””
“Richard and Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
“Did Arthur know Vanessa was involved before Dad died?””
Eleanor nodded.
“He said she had been meeting your father secretly. He also told me Robert had given him a document that could expose the entire scheme.””
“The ledger?””
“I believe so.””
Marcus paced across the kitchen.
“Then why didn't Arthur give it to the police?””
“Because he didn't trust them.””
Marcus stopped.
“What?””
“Your father suspected someone inside the local police department was passing information to Richard. Arthur wanted to take the evidence to federal investigators, but he needed time.””
“And then he died.””
Eleanor looked down.
“Yes.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“Did you know he was murdered?””
“I suspected it. I just didn't have proof.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father made me promise to protect you. I thought if I kept you away from everything, you'd have a chance at a normal life.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Eleanor, I married the woman they used to steal my inheritance.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.””
“And I slept beside her for six years.””
“I know, sweetheart.””
He turned away.
Outside, a car passed slowly along the street.
Marcus glanced through the window.
A black SUV was parked across from Eleanor's house.
The driver appeared to be looking at his phone.
Marcus frowned.
“Do you know that vehicle?””
Eleanor followed his gaze.
Her expression changed.
“Oh, no.””
“What?””
She stood so quickly that the chair scraped backward.
“Come with me.””
She hurried toward the back hallway.
Marcus followed.
“Eleanor, what's happening?””
“There's a second entrance through the garden.””
“Why are we leaving?””
“Because whoever found out you were here doesn't want you asking questions.””
A sharp knock sounded at the front door.
Then another.
A man's voice called from outside.
“Mrs. Williams? Police department. We need to speak with you.””
Marcus looked toward the door.
Eleanor grabbed his arm.
“Don't answer.””
The knocking became louder.
“Mrs. Williams! Open the door!””
Marcus pulled out his phone and called Daniel.
“Someone's at Eleanor's house claiming to be police.””
Daniel answered immediately.
“Don't let them inside.””
“Why?””
“Because I just checked the search warrant information. The detectives assigned to Arthur Bell's case are at the old property. Nobody should be visiting your aunt.””
Marcus looked at Eleanor.
She was trembling.
“Daniel, get someone here. Now.””
“I've already contacted a private security firm. They're ten minutes away.””
A crash sounded from the front of the house.
Someone had forced the door.
Eleanor grabbed Marcus's hand.
“There's something else your father left behind.””
“What?””
She pulled a small key from the chain around her neck.
“Your mother's jewelry box.””
Marcus stared.
“My mother died when I was fourteen.””
“I know. Your father kept it after she passed.””
“What's inside?””
“I never opened it. Robert told me the key belonged to you.””
Another crash sounded.
Footsteps moved across the hallway.
Marcus slipped the key into his pocket.
“Where is the box?””
“Under the stairs, behind the old photographs.””
They hurried into the garden.
Eleanor unlocked a side gate and pushed him through.
“Go to the main road. Don't stop.””
“What about you?””
“I'll be fine.””
“I'm not leaving you.””
She gripped his face.
“Marcus, your father spent the last months of his life trying to keep you alive. Don't make his sacrifice meaningless.””
He wanted to argue.
Then a voice shouted from inside the house.
“CHECK THE BACK!””
Eleanor pushed him toward the street.
“Go!””
Marcus ran.
He reached the corner just as a dark sedan pulled alongside him.
The passenger window rolled down.
A familiar face appeared.
Derek Lawson.
“Get in,” Derek said.
Marcus stopped.
“Are you insane?””
Derek looked over his shoulder.
“They're looking for you. You have about thirty seconds before they find this street.””
“Why should I trust you?””
“Because if they catch you, Vanessa gets everything.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Get out of my way.””
Derek leaned across the seat and unlocked the passenger door.
“Your father didn't die in an accident.””
Marcus froze.
Derek's expression was serious now.
“And I know who killed him.””
Twenty minutes later, Marcus sat inside a nearly empty parking garage.
Derek stood beside the car, nervously checking the entrance.
Marcus kept his distance.
“Talk.””
Derek rubbed his face.
“I'm not proud of what I did.””
“You stole two million dollars from my father's trust.””
“I didn't steal it.””
“You received it.””
“Because Richard paid me to move it.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“That's supposed to make it better?””
“No. But you need to understand that I'm not the one controlling this.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Why were you in my bedroom?””
Derek looked away.
“Vanessa told me you wouldn't be home until evening.””
“So you were sleeping with my wife.””
Derek didn't answer.
Marcus grabbed his jacket.
“Look at me when I'm talking to you!””
Derek raised both hands.
“I know. I know what it looks like.””
“It looks like you're a liar who slept with my wife and helped steal my inheritance.””
Derek swallowed.
“Vanessa told me she was leaving you.””
Marcus released his jacket.
“She told me the same thing about being faithful.””
Derek lowered his eyes.
“There's something I didn't know until recently. Vanessa wasn't just having an affair with me.””
Marcus stared.
“What does that mean?””
“She was using me.””
“For what?””
“To make sure Richard could keep the money moving without raising suspicion. She said I was getting a share of the company once everything was finalized.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You expect me to believe you suddenly developed a conscience?””
“No. I developed fear.””
Derek reached into his jacket.
Marcus immediately stepped back.
“Slowly.””
Derek pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Marcus recognized the old family property immediately.
But the picture showed something he'd never seen before.
His father was standing beside a black sedan.
Richard Cole was standing several feet away.
And Arthur Bell was sitting in the driver's seat.
The photograph was dated the night before Robert's supposed accident.
On the back, someone had written:
The last meeting.
Marcus looked up.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Vanessa's office.””
“Why were you there?””
“I was looking for the original property documents.””
“Did you find them?””
Derek nodded.
He handed Marcus a folded sheet of paper.
It was a list of bank accounts and transfers.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
If Marcus discovers the trust, activate the second agreement.
Marcus frowned.
“What second agreement?””
Derek looked directly at him.
“Your wife has another marriage document.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“What?””
“An agreement Richard prepared before your wedding. It says that if you die without children, the controlling shares of the Williams development group transfer to a private beneficiary.””
Marcus stared.
“Who?””
Derek hesitated.
Then he said:
“Richard Cole.””
Marcus stepped backward.
Before he could respond, Derek's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“It's Vanessa.””
“Answer it.””
Derek hesitated.
“Put it on speaker.””
He accepted the call.
Vanessa's voice came through, sharp and impatient.
“Where the hell are you?””
Derek looked at Marcus.
“I told you I needed some time.””
“Time? You don't get to disappear when things get complicated.””
“Vanessa, I found the documents.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa spoke more quietly.
“Which documents?””
“The ones from the old house.””
Marcus watched Derek's face.
Vanessa laughed.
“Derek, darling, you're getting confused. Bring them to me.””
“I think you need to tell Marcus the truth.””
A pause.
Then her voice changed completely.
“Put him on the phone.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Hello, Vanessa.””
A long silence followed.
Then she said something that made his stomach drop.
“Marcus, if you're with Derek, ask him what happened to your father's car the night he died.””
The call disconnected.
Derek's face had gone gray.
Marcus stared at him.
“What happened to my father's car?””
Derek looked toward the garage entrance.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Richard wasn't the only person inside that car.””
