Chapter 8: The Birth Certificate

Vanessa was waiting in the Greenwich mansion when Clara arrived.

She looked nothing like the confident woman Clara had seen through the kitchen window two days earlier.

Her cream silk dress had been replaced by sweatpants and an oversized sweater. Her eyes were swollen, and her hands shook as she held a folder.

Raymond entered first.

“Where is my mother?””

Vanessa stood.

“I don't know.””

“What do you mean you don't know?””

“She left with the baby.””

Raymond grabbed the folder.

“What's this?””

Vanessa stepped backward.

“It's what I found in her bedroom.””

Clara moved closer.

Inside were hospital documents, adoption agreements, and a birth certificate.

Her own name appeared on the page.

Clara Whitmore.

Under the section marked Biological Mother, someone had typed her full name and date of birth.

The child's name was Alexander Bennett Whitmore.

Clara's knees weakened.

“Why does this say I'm his mother?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because the embryo was created using your eggs.””

Clara looked up.

“And the woman who carried him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Margaret's attorney told me the surrogate was anonymous.””

“That's not what Margaret said.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“She told me the woman was your mother.””

Clara went completely still.

“What?””

“Margaret said Elizabeth carried the embryo.””

Clara gripped the paper.

“My mother?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I don't know if it's true. But I heard them arguing about it last night.””

Raymond took the document from Clara.

“This is impossible.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Is it? You've lied about everything else.””

Raymond turned toward her.

“Where did you get this?””

“Your mother's safe.””

“Did you open it?””

“Yes.””

“Did you take anything else?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Do you really think that's what matters?””

Clara placed the birth certificate on the table.

“Vanessa, why did you help them?””

The younger woman looked down.

“Raymond told me he wanted a family. He said you had agreed to donate the embryos after the divorce.””

“You believed that?””

“I wanted to believe it.””

Clara stared at her.

“You were drinking wine in my kitchen while I stood outside with my suitcase.””

Vanessa began crying.

“I know.””

“You wore my clothes.””

“I know.””

“You watched me lose my home.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn't know you were pregnant.””

Clara's voice remained steady.

“But you knew you were carrying my embryos.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I'm sorry.””

Clara looked at her for a long moment.

She wanted to hate Vanessa.

Part of her did.

But the woman standing in front of her was also discovering that Margaret had manipulated her.

That didn't erase what she had done.

It simply meant the real architect of the nightmare was still somewhere outside the room.

“Where is Margaret?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“She said she was taking Alexander somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

Raymond picked up his phone.

“I'm calling the driver.””

He dialed twice.

No answer.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Stop searching. The child belongs to the Whitmore family.

Raymond showed Clara.

She read it.

Then she looked at the birth certificate.

“Arthur needs to see this.””

At the Bennett headquarters, Diane immediately recognized the significance of the document.

“This birth certificate is not sufficient to establish legal parentage,” she explained.

“We need the hospital records and the gestational carrier's identity.””

“But it says my name.””

“Someone may have entered your information without proper authorization.””

Clara sat opposite her.

“Can Margaret legally keep the baby?””

“Not if the transfer was unauthorized and the necessary parental consents were forged. But we need evidence.””

Arthur entered carrying a laptop.

“I've received an update from the investigator.””

Clara stood.

“Have they found my mother?””

“Not yet. But they've located the private residence where Elizabeth Morgan was staying.””

“Is she there?””

Arthur hesitated.

“The property is empty.””

Clara closed her eyes.

“Again?””

“There was a medical transport vehicle outside the residence yesterday. The investigator believes she was moved.””

“By Margaret?””

“We can't confirm that.””

Diane opened the birth certificate again.

“There's something interesting here.””

She pointed to a small reference number at the bottom.

“This certificate was issued under a confidential reproductive arrangement. The number connects to a private agency in Boston.””

Arthur leaned over.

“Can you trace it?””

“I'm trying.””

A moment later, her computer displayed a company name.

*New Dawn Family Services.*

Clara recognized the name.

“Is that the agency Margaret used?””

Diane nodded.

“It's registered to a holding company controlled by Whitmore Medical Technologies.””

Arthur's expression darkened.

“Of course it is.””

Clara leaned forward.

“Can we contact them?””

Diane shook her head.

“Not yet. If Margaret knows we're investigating, she'll destroy whatever records remain.””

Clara looked at the birth certificate.

“Then we need someone on the inside.””

Arthur glanced at her.

“Someone who knows the agency?””

Clara nodded.

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa returned to the mansion that afternoon with a small bag.

Raymond met her at the door.

“Where have you been?””

“Getting my things.””

“You can't leave now.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Watch me.””

“Mother has Alexander.””

“And that's your problem.””

Raymond grabbed her wrist.

“Vanessa, listen to me. We need to find him.””

She pulled away.

“You need to find him. I'm finished being your convenient solution.””

Raymond stepped back.

“You agreed to this arrangement.””

“I agreed to carry embryos from an anonymous donor. I did not agree to become part of a criminal operation.””

“Keep your voice down.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You know what the worst part is? I actually thought you loved me.””

Raymond said nothing.

She picked up her bag.

“Margaret has been calling me every night, telling me what to eat, what medication to take, and when I could leave the house. She even had someone check my phone.””

Raymond looked away.

Vanessa continued.

“I found another document in her safe.””

“What document?””

“A payment authorization.””

“For what?””

Vanessa pulled a folded page from her bag.

“Your mother's account paid a private clinic nearly two million dollars to perform a procedure on someone called Elizabeth Morgan.””

Raymond's face went white.

“When?””

“Eight months ago.””

“That's impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because Elizabeth was supposed to be incapable of carrying a pregnancy.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Then perhaps your mother found a way.””

Raymond took the paper.

At the bottom was Margaret's signature.

And beneath it, a handwritten note:

Proceed with the fifth embryo. The biological connection must remain within the family.

Raymond lowered the document.

For the first time, he seemed to understand what his mother had done.

That evening, Clara received a call from an unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice whispered.

“Clara?””

Clara froze.

“Who is this?””

“It's me.””

The voice sounded weak.

But Clara knew it.

She knew it before the woman said her name.

“Mom?””

There was a soft sob.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

Clara's knees gave way.

She sat down on the nearest chair.

“Mom? Where are you?””

“I'm somewhere safe.””

“Are you really alive?””

“Yes.””

Clara covered her mouth.

“Why didn't you come home?””

The woman began crying.

“I tried.””

Clara squeezed her eyes shut.

“I went to your funeral.””

“I know.””

“Dad told me you were dead.””

“He was trying to protect you.””

“From whom?””

A pause.

Then her mother whispered:

“From Margaret Whitmore.””

Clara looked toward Arthur, who had just entered the room.

He immediately motioned for her to keep the call active.

“Mom, I need you to tell me something. Did you carry the fifth embryo?””

The line went silent.

Then Elizabeth answered.

“Yes.””

Clara's breath caught.

“Did you give birth to Alexander?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he now?””

“I don't know.””

Clara felt her chest tighten.

“Mom, please.””

“Margaret took him. She said he would be safer with her.””

“Why would she do that?””

Elizabeth's voice became frightened.

“Because the baby has something your father discovered.””

Clara leaned closer to the phone.

“What?””

“The genetic marker. The one connected to the research.””

Arthur began writing notes.

Clara swallowed.

“Mom, what research?””

“The Whitmores were trying to create a treatment for their hereditary heart condition. But they didn't want to wait for medicine. They wanted to control the genetics of their descendants.””

Clara looked at Arthur.

“Are you saying they were creating children to carry specific genes?””

“Yes.””

Her mother began coughing.

“Your father found out that the research was harming people. He tried to stop it.””

“Who caused his death?””

Elizabeth started crying again.

“Margaret didn't drive the car that night, Clara.””

Clara's heart pounded.

“Then who did?””

Her mother's answer came slowly.

“Raymond.””

The room went silent.

Clara felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.

“Mom, what are you saying?””

“He was driving the car that followed your father. I saw him.””

Clara could barely breathe.

“Raymond killed Dad?””

“I don't know if he intended to. But I know he was there.””

A loud sound came through the phone.

Elizabeth gasped.

“Someone's here.””

“Mom?””

“Clara, listen to me. You must find the original research archive. Your father left the proof in a place Margaret would never think to look.””

“Where?””

Elizabeth's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Inside the piano.””

Then the call ended.

Clara stared at the phone.

Arthur approached.

“What happened?””

She looked up.

“My mother is alive.””

He nodded.

“And?””

Clara's voice trembled.

“She says Raymond was following my father the night he died.””

Arthur's expression darkened.

Before he could respond, Diane rushed into the room.

“Clara, we have a problem.””

“What?””

“Margaret has filed an emergency petition for guardianship of Alexander.””

Clara stood.

“On what grounds?””

Diane placed a document on the table.

“She claims the child was conceived through a lawful arrangement and that you abandoned your parental rights.””

Clara looked at the signature.

It was supposedly hers.

But it was dated three months earlier.

Three months before the transfer.

Three months before she even knew she was pregnant.

And at the bottom of the page was a witness signature.

Raymond Whitmore.
