Chapter 6: The Morning They Tried to Take My Father's Company

At 7:30 the following morning, I stood in front of the mirror in my Manhattan apartment.

I wore a tailored black suit, a white silk blouse, and the diamond earrings my father had given me on my twenty-fifth birthday.

My wedding ring remained in the conference room at Hayes Capital.

I had no intention of putting it back on.

My phone rang.

Renee.

“Everything is ready,” she said.

“Have the ownership documents been verified?””

“Yes. The original agreements have been authenticated by the independent custodian.””

“And the trust suspension?””

“Activated at 6:45 a.m. All delegated access has been frozen.””

I adjusted my jacket.

“Good.””

“There is one more thing.””

“What?””

“Richard Coleman called. He wants to speak with you before the meeting.””

“Why?””

“He says Patricia has arranged a private vote and that several directors have already received revised documents.””

I picked up my handbag.

“Send me the revised documents.””

“Already did.””

I opened the attachment.

The proposed restructuring was more aggressive than the version Richard had shown me.

Northbridge would transfer its temporary rights into Hayes Meridian Holdings.

Margaret would become chair.

Brielle would receive a permanent board seat.

Daniel would become chief executive officer of the new entity.

And Patricia would retain control over the executive committee.

But the most disturbing part was the final paragraph.

It stated that Hayes Capital had agreed to relinquish its special voting protections in exchange for a cash settlement.

I read the paragraph twice.

The settlement amount was one hundred and twenty million dollars.

They were offering me money to surrender the company my father had spent his life building.

Except I had never agreed to the offer.

“Renee, did anyone from our office sign this?””

“No.””

“Then why does the document say we did?””

She paused.

“Because it includes a digital signature from an authorized Hayes Capital representative.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Your aunt.””

I closed my eyes.

“Margaret doesn't work for Hayes Capital.””

“She was listed as an emergency trustee under the old administrative arrangement.””

“Which we just suspended.””

“Exactly.””

I looked at the clock.

“Let's go.””

Carter Dynamics occupied a forty-story glass tower in Midtown Manhattan.

I had visited the building dozens of times.

But this morning, the lobby felt different.

Security guards stood near the elevators.

Several board members were already arriving.

And above the reception desk, the company's silver logo reflected the morning light.

Marcus opened the car door.

“Good luck, Mrs. Hayes.””

I smiled faintly.

“Thank you.””

Inside the lobby, a receptionist approached me.

“Good morning, Mrs. Hayes. Ms. Carter is expecting you.””

“Which Ms. Carter?””

She looked confused.

“Mrs. Patricia Carter.””

I nodded.

“Then she can wait.””

I walked toward the private elevators.

Renee followed.

At the thirty-eighth floor, the doors opened directly into the executive conference area.

Margaret was standing near the entrance.

She wore a cream-colored suit and a pearl necklace.

When she saw me, she smiled.

“Nia.””

I stopped.

“Good morning, Aunt Margaret.””

She stepped forward as though she intended to hug me.

I didn't move.

Her arms lowered.

“I was hoping we could talk before the meeting.””

“About what?””

“Family.””

I glanced toward the conference room.

“Then you should have thought about family before using my father's signature.””

Her expression hardened.

“You don't understand what happened.””

“That's what everyone keeps telling me.””

“Nia, please. Your father made decisions that affected all of us.””

“And you decided to correct those decisions by taking my company?””

“It's not your company alone.””

I stared at her.

“Interesting. The ownership documents disagree.””

Margaret sighed.

“Charles always made you believe that everything belonged to you.””

“He made sure the things he built would remain protected.””

“He was stubborn.””

“He was careful.””

“He never trusted me.””

I stepped closer.

“Perhaps he had a reason.””

Her face reddened.

“You sound exactly like him.””

“Thank you.””

I walked past her.

Behind me, she said something that made me stop.

“Your father would be ashamed of what you've become.””

I turned slowly.

“No, Aunt Margaret. My father would be ashamed of what you've done.””

Then I entered the conference room.

The room was already full.

Richard Coleman sat near the head of the table.

Patricia was beside him.

Brielle sat across from Daniel.

Several directors were reviewing documents.

When I entered, the conversations stopped.

Patricia gave me a thin smile.

“Finally. We can begin.””

I took the empty chair opposite her.

Renee placed a folder beside me.

Margaret entered a moment later and sat next to Patricia.

Daniel looked at me.

His expression was difficult to read.

I noticed that he hadn't shaved.

His tie was crooked.

He looked like he hadn't slept.

Patricia tapped the table.

“Thank you all for attending. We have an important opportunity to secure the future of Carter Dynamics.””

Richard cleared his throat.

“Before we proceed, I believe Mrs. Hayes should be given an opportunity to review the proposed restructuring.””

Patricia smiled.

“Of course. That's why she's here.””

She slid a document across the table.

I didn't touch it.

“I've already reviewed it.””

“Wonderful.””

“I also reviewed the forged authorization attached to it.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Let's not use inflammatory language.””

“Then stop attaching false signatures to financial documents.””

Margaret leaned forward.

“Nia, this is not the time.””

I turned toward her.

“Then when is the time? After you've transferred my shares?””

Brielle suddenly spoke.

“Can we please stop pretending this is all about stealing? The company needs money. Everyone knows that.””

I looked at her.

“Then perhaps the company should raise capital honestly.””

“We tried!””

“Did you?””

She slammed her palm against the table.

“You don't understand what it's like being part of this family!””

I stared at her.

“Try being married into it.””

Daniel lowered his head.

Patricia interrupted.

“Enough. We are not here to discuss personal grievances.””

She turned toward Richard.

“Let's proceed with the vote.””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Before the vote, we need to establish whether the proposed transfer is legally valid.””

Patricia's expression tightened.

“Of course it is. The necessary authorizations have been obtained.””

Renee opened her folder.

“Not all of them.””

She placed the authenticated ownership agreement on the table.

Patricia glanced at it.

Then at me.

“What is this?””

“The original shareholder protection agreement.””

Richard leaned forward.

Margaret went pale.

Renee continued.

“Hayes Capital retains exclusive approval rights over the protected voting shares. No transfer, delegation, or pledge can occur without direct written consent from the named successor.””

Patricia laughed nervously.

“We've already addressed that.””

“Then you'll have no difficulty explaining this.””

Renee placed the original document beside the proposed restructuring.

“Your submitted authorization was invalid. The electronic certificate used to approve it belonged to the Hayes Legacy Trust, whose delegated access has now been suspended.””

The room went quiet.

Margaret stood.

“You had no right to suspend that authority!””

Renee looked at her.

“Actually, she did.””

I leaned back.

“It's my trust.””

Margaret's hands trembled.

Patricia turned toward Richard.

“Are you going to allow this?””

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

“Mrs. Carter, I don't believe we have a choice.””

Patricia's face darkened.

“Of course we do. We have a board resolution.””

“Which cannot override the original ownership agreement.””

Brielle looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Patricia ignored her.

She turned toward me.

“You think you've won because you have some old paperwork?””

“No.””

I opened my folder.

“I think I've won because the original documents are real, the signatures are verified, and the people who attempted this transaction left a very clear trail.””

I placed three documents on the table.

The Northbridge incorporation record.

The proposed Sterling Ridge financing agreement.

And the forged transfer authorization.

“Let's discuss what happens next.””

Richard looked at the documents.

“Mrs. Hayes, what are you proposing?””

“An independent forensic audit of every transaction connected to Northbridge. A suspension of all pending restructuring actions. And the immediate removal of anyone who authorized the use of my father's identity without permission.””

Patricia stood so quickly that her chair scraped against the floor.

“You cannot remove me!””

I looked at her.

“I haven't tried.””

She frowned.

“Then what are you saying?””

“I'm saying the investigation hasn't reached the part that concerns you most.””

I turned to Renee.

“Show them the next document.””

She connected her laptop to the conference room screen.

A spreadsheet appeared.

It listed every payment made through Northbridge.

The first three payments were consulting fees to Margaret.

The next six were transfers to accounts controlled by companies connected to Patricia.

Then came a series of payments to Sterling Ridge Partners.

Richard leaned forward.

“What are these?””

Renee enlarged the final transaction.

“An advance payment of twelve million dollars.””

“To whom?”” Daniel asked.

“To an offshore company registered under the name of Sterling Ridge's managing partner.””

I stared at Patricia.

“You told everyone the company needed eighty million dollars to survive.””

Patricia's face had gone white.

“But twelve million dollars had already been paid before the financing was finalized.””

Margaret suddenly stood.

“That money wasn't stolen!””

I turned toward her.

“Then where did it go?””

She looked at Patricia.

Patricia looked at Daniel.

And Daniel finally stood.

“Mom, tell them.””

Patricia snapped.

“Sit down!””

“No.””

He walked toward the screen.

“Tell them what you did with the money.””

Her voice dropped.

“Daniel, you have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I saw the bank statements.””

The room went silent.

He turned toward me.

“Nia, I found another account last night. It was opened under a company name I didn't recognize.””

“Which company?””

“Sterling Ridge Holdings.””

I looked at Renee.

She was already searching.

Daniel continued.

“Mom transferred twelve million dollars into it. Then another four million. The money came from the family office.””

Patricia's face twisted.

“Those were legitimate payments.””

“Then why did you tell me the account was empty?””

“I was protecting you!””

“From what?””

She didn't answer.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about the transfers?””

“No.””

“Did you sign the instructions?””

He hesitated.

Then he shook his head.

“No.””

Renee opened another file.

“There's one more record.””

She displayed an email.

The sender was Patricia.

The recipient was an unknown address.

The subject line read:

*Once Nia signs, we can finish everything.*

I read the message.

The voting rights are the only obstacle. Once the transfer is complete, Sterling Ridge will release the remaining funds. Margaret will receive her position, Brielle will receive the committee seat, and Daniel will finally have full control of the company.

I looked at my husband.

He stared at the screen.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “you were supposed to have full control?””

He looked at me.

“I never asked for that.””

Patricia laughed.

“You didn't have to. Everything I did was for you!””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You used my name to create a company. You used my account to pay for it. You involved Brielle.

You dragged Nia's father into this. And now you're telling me it was for me?””

“I was securing your future!””

“By stealing from my wife?””

Patricia's face hardened.

“She was never supposed to control the company forever!””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because your father promised this company would remain a Carter family business!””

I slowly stood.

“My father never promised you anything.””

“He made a deal with us!””

“Show me.””

She froze.

I continued.

“Show me the agreement.””

Patricia's mouth opened.

Then Margaret interrupted.

“Enough. Patricia, stop.””

I turned toward my aunt.

She looked frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

And then I understood.

Patricia wasn't the only person hiding something.

Margaret reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

She placed it on the table.

“I have something that proves Charles made a separate agreement with the Carter family.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What's inside?””

Margaret looked at me.

“The original document.””

Renee reached for it.

But Margaret held it back.

“Not so quickly.””

She turned toward Patricia.

“If I'm going down, you're coming with me.””

Patricia shot to her feet.

“Margaret, don't you dare!””

My aunt opened the envelope.

Inside was a document bearing my father's signature.

But this time, beneath his name, there was another signature.

A name I recognized immediately.

My mother's.

I hadn't seen her signature in sixteen years.

Because my mother had died when I was twelve.

And according to the date printed at the top of the document, she had supposedly signed it six months before she died.

Margaret looked directly at me.

“Your father wasn't the only one who made promises to the Carter family, Nia.””

She slid the document across the table.

“Your mother made one, too.””

I looked down.

The first sentence read:

*In exchange for the Carter family's financial protection, the Hayes family agrees to surrender all future claims to the controlling interest in Carter Dynamics.*

My hands went cold.

Because if that agreement was genuine, everything my father had built to protect me might have been based on a lie.

May you like

And Patricia was smiling again.

This time, she looked certain she had finally won.
