Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Money

Michael didn't answer Taylor's question.

He stood in the center of the living room, staring at the photograph on her phone as though it were a weapon pointed directly at his chest.

I took the phone from Taylor.

The document was only partially visible, but I recognized the format.

It looked like a financial summary.

Our mortgage.

Our savings account.

The balance of our joint checking account.

A list of recurring expenses.

And a column labeled *Available Funds*.

I had never seen that document before.

I had never asked Michael to prepare it.

“Why do you have this?”” I asked him.

He rubbed his forehead.

“It's a preliminary financial worksheet.””

“For what?””

“Planning.””

“What kind of planning?””

He exhaled sharply.

“I'm an adult. I have to think about our finances.””

I stared at him.

“Of course you do. We both do. That's why I'm asking why you prepared a financial worksheet and apparently showed it to Taylor.””

He looked toward her.

“She shouldn't have taken pictures of my desk.””

Taylor's expression hardened.

“You left it sitting next to the printer.””

“It's confidential.””

“Then why was my name written on it?””

That silenced him.

I looked at the photograph again.

There was a handwritten note in the lower corner.

*Friday — 4:30 p.m.*

Beneath it were the initials M.R.

Michael Robert.

My husband's full initials.

The same time that appeared on Harper's calendar.

I felt the room grow cold.

“What was supposed to happen at 4:30?””

Michael looked at me.

“Nothing.””

“Then why is it written here?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember?””

“I handle dozens of documents every week!””

“Dozens of documents about our private finances?””

He threw his hands into the air.

“Can you stop acting like everything is a criminal investigation?””

The irony was so staggering that I couldn't respond immediately.

Diane appeared in the doorway.

She had left Harper watching a cartoon in the kitchen, and she was holding her phone.

“Robert is on his way,” she said.

Michael spun toward her.

“Why did you call Dad?””

“Because Harper told us he was involved, and I want to hear what he knows.””

“You had no right.””

Diane stared at him.

“I have every right to ask why my granddaughter has been taken to your office without her mother's knowledge.””

Michael's jaw tightened.

“You're making this worse.””

“No, Michael. You did that yourself.””

She turned to me.

“I asked Robert to bring whatever records he had about the Friday arrangements.””

Michael went completely still.

“What records?””

Diane narrowed her eyes.

“What are you afraid he might bring?””

“Nothing.””

“Then why do you look terrified?””

He didn't answer.

I returned my attention to Taylor.

“You said you realized something wasn't right. What happened last Friday?””

Taylor looked uncomfortable.

“I arrived at the office at about four-thirty. Harper was already there with Robert. Michael was in his office.””

“And?””

“He told me to keep Harper occupied in the waiting area while he finished a meeting.””

“What kind of meeting?””

“I don't know.””

“Who was he meeting with?””

Taylor shook her head.

“He didn't tell me.””

I glanced at Michael.

He had gone pale again.

Taylor continued.

“After about twenty minutes, he came out and asked me to take Harper to the break room. He said he needed privacy.””

My pulse quickened.

“Did you?””

“Yes. But I left my bag in the waiting area.””

“And?””

“When I returned, the financial document was on the desk near the printer. My phone was on the table, and I took a picture of the page because I recognized your name.””

“Why?””

Taylor hesitated.

“Because Michael had told me he was preparing to leave the marriage, but I hadn't realized he was reviewing your accounts in that much detail.””

I stared at her.

“You took a picture of my financial information because you were worried about me?””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know how that sounds.””

“It sounds like you were involved in an affair with my husband while keeping an eye on his finances.””

“I didn't plan any of this.””

“But you continued coming.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because I thought he was going to tell you the truth. And because I cared about him.””

The admission hung in the air.

Michael looked at her with contempt.

“You cared about the version of me you invented.””

Taylor stared at him.

“You told me you loved me.””

He looked away.

“And now you're pretending none of it happened?””

“I said I made mistakes.””

“You promised we'd have a future.””

“Taylor, stop.””

“No! You asked me to wait. You asked me to keep everything quiet. You told me the money was legitimate and that your family knew you were making arrangements.””

She shook her head.

“I should have walked away when I realized your wife didn't know anything.””

I studied her face.

For the first time, I could see that she was not simply afraid of being exposed.

She was afraid that everything Michael had promised her had been a lie.

I wasn't ready to forgive her.

I wasn't sure I ever would be.

But I was beginning to understand that Michael had told different stories to different people, making each of us believe we were the only person who knew what was happening.

He had told me the payments were an error.

He had told Taylor our marriage was over.

He had apparently told his father that he needed help with childcare.

And Harper had been placed in the middle, moving between adults who didn't know they were participating in the same deception.

The doorbell rang.

Diane looked toward the entryway.

“That's Robert.””

Michael took a sudden step toward the door.

“I'll speak to him outside.””

“No,” I said.

He stopped.

“Everyone stays here.””

“You don't get to dictate everything.””

“And you don't get to decide which witnesses I can speak to.””

His face darkened.

“Witnesses? Listen to yourself.””

I didn't answer.

Diane opened the door.

Robert entered carrying a leather folder and looking deeply uncomfortable.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and the same steady eyes Michael had inherited.

When he saw the four of us gathered in the living room, he stopped.

“What happened?””

Diane crossed her arms.

“You tell us.””

Robert glanced at Michael.

Then at me.

Then at Taylor.

His expression changed.

“Oh, no.””

Those two words made my stomach drop.

I stepped toward him.

“What do you know?””

He swallowed.

“I think there's been a misunderstanding.””

Michael immediately seized on the phrase.

“Exactly. That's what I've been trying to explain.””

Robert shot his son a sharp look.

“Not now.””

The room went silent.

I stared at my father-in-law.

“Robert, did you take Harper to Michael's office on Fridays?””

He lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Michael told me he needed help with his schedule.””

“What schedule?””

“He said he had work to finish and couldn't always collect Harper himself. He asked me to bring her to the office and stay until Taylor arrived.””

“And you agreed?””

“He's my son.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Robert's shoulders slumped.

“No. It's not.””

He opened the leather folder.

Inside were several printed emails, a few handwritten notes, and what appeared to be a calendar.

He placed them on the coffee table.

“I brought these because I thought someone might need to understand the arrangement.””

Michael lunged forward.

“Dad, don't.””

Robert pulled his hand away.

“Enough.””

The word was quiet, but it carried the authority of a man who had finally reached the end of his patience.

He turned toward me.

“Michael told me he was dealing with a difficult personal situation. He said he needed some time to make decisions about his future, and he didn't want Harper caught in the middle.””

My throat tightened.

“What did he say about me?””

Robert hesitated.

“He said you were aware that he was considering changes.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my chest.

“I wasn't aware of anything.””

“I understand that now.””

“Did he tell you he was involved with Taylor?””

Robert's eyes widened.

“No.””

Taylor looked down.

Robert continued.

“He told me she was helping with childcare. He said the arrangement was temporary and that you had approved it.””

I closed my eyes briefly.

Even his own father had been given a carefully constructed version of the truth.

I opened them again.

“Why did you bring the folder?””

Robert looked at Michael.

“Because last Friday, I heard a conversation I wasn't supposed to hear.””

Michael's face went completely white.

“What conversation?”” I asked.

Robert removed one sheet from the folder.

“I arrived early. Michael was speaking to someone on the phone. He didn't know I was outside the office.””

He handed me the page.

It was a printed email chain.

The first message was from Michael.

The second was from someone whose name I didn't recognize.

The subject line read:

*Friday Meeting — Final Arrangements.*

I began to read.

Then I reached the last paragraph.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Because the email wasn't about babysitting.

It wasn't about Taylor.

And it wasn't even about ending a marriage.

It was about a decision involving our house, our savings, and a signature Michael apparently expected me to provide.

I looked up slowly.

“Michael,” I whispered, “what have you done?””

He stared at the page.

Then he looked toward the front door.

For the first time, I understood why he had been so desperate to keep Taylor away from our home.

She wasn't merely the woman who knew about his affair.

She was the woman who had seen something on his desk that could expose a far more dangerous secret.

And as Robert reached into the folder for another document, Michael finally lost control.

“Dad, if you show her that, you'll destroy this family!””

Robert's face hardened.

“No, son.””

May you like

He placed the next page in front of me.

“You've already done that.””
