Chapter 9: The Choice I Never Knew I Made
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Brandon.
Not even the clock on the wall seemed real.
I just stood there, staring at the man I had loved for seven years.
The man who had held me when I cried after my parents died.
The man who promised he would protect me.
The man who had just told me my parents’ death was not an accident.
“Say it again.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Brandon looked at me.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Say exactly what you mean.””
His face was filled with guilt.
“Your father was threatened.””
“By who?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Brenda?””
His silence was enough.
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had wondered why my life had changed so suddenly.
Why I lost my parents.
Why the apartment became the center of everyone’s attention.
Why Brenda hated me before she even knew me.
The answer had been there all along.
“Tell me everything.””
Brandon looked at the floor.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“Yes.””
“I know.””
“No, Brandon.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t know.””
He looked up.
“I spent years thinking I was unlucky.””
Tears burned my eyes.
“I thought losing my parents was just something terrible that happened.””
I pointed toward the photograph.
“But you knew there was more.””
He whispered:
“Yes.””
“And you still married me.””
His face broke.
“I loved you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Love without honesty is just another kind of betrayal.””
He looked away.
That sentence hurt him.
Good.
Because I needed him to understand.
Pain was the only thing he had never been forced to feel.
Brandon sat down.
“I was twenty-eight when I met your father.””
I stayed standing.
“Your father found out about my financial problems.””
“How?””
“Someone at work told him.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
“Brenda.””
My stomach tightened.
“She introduced you to my father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He took a deep breath.
“Because she thought he would help me.””
“With what?””
“My debt.””
I stared at him.
“And when he refused?””
“She became angry.””
“What did she do?””
“She said he was selfish.””
My hands curled into fists.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“After everything he did?””
Brandon looked ashamed.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became colder.
“You never knew him.””
A painful silence filled the room.
Then Brandon said:
“Your father told me something I never forgot.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He said, ‘A person who needs someone else’s kindness should never mistake it for ownership.’”
My heart tightened.
That sounded exactly like him.
My father had always believed helping someone did not mean giving them control over you.
Brandon continued.
“He told me he would help me find a way out of my debt.””
I frowned.
“But not by using me.””
“Yes.””
“Then what happened?””
Brandon looked away.
“Your mother-in-law didn’t accept that.””
My phone rang.
Sarah.
I answered immediately.
“Sarah?””
Her voice was urgent.
“Emma, where are you?””
“At home.””
“Are you alone?””
I looked at Brandon.
“No.””
A pause.
“Is it Brandon?””
“Yes.””
“Emma, you need to be careful.””
My body tensed.
“Why?””
“Because I found something.””
“What?””
“I checked the old estate records.””
“And?””
“There was a missing document.””
“What document?””
Sarah lowered her voice.
“Your father’s final property instructions.””
I froze.
“My father had more documents?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“That’s the problem.””
“What problem?””
“They were removed before the estate was finalized.””
My stomach turned.
“Removed by who?””
Sarah hesitated.
Then:
“Someone with access.””
I looked at Brandon.
He noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I ignored him.
“Sarah, can you find out who removed them?””
“I’m already trying.””
“Do it.””
“Emma.””
“What?””
“Be careful who you trust.””
The call ended.
I looked at Brandon.
“You knew about missing documents.””
His eyes widened.
“What?””
“My father’s estate documents.””
“No.””
“You knew?””
“Emma, I swear I didn’t.””
I studied his face.
For the first time, I believed he might actually be telling the truth.
And that scared me.
Because if Brandon wasn’t responsible…
Then who was?
The answer came twenty minutes later.
The front door opened.
I froze.
Nobody had permission to enter anymore.
Nobody except—
Brenda.
She walked inside.
And she wasn’t alone.
Behind her was a man in a suit.
Older.
Serious.
Holding a briefcase.
My heart sank.
“What are you doing here?””
Brenda smiled.
But there was no warmth in it.
“I came to finish this.””
Brandon stood.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“You failed.””
His face changed.
“Mom, leave.””
She laughed softly.
“After everything I did for you?””
I stared at her.
Everything.
The word felt heavy.
“What did you do?””
Brenda looked at me.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
She glanced at the man beside her.
“Then maybe you should hear it from someone who understands the law.””
The man opened his briefcase.
“I’m Daniel Hayes.””
He handed me a folder.
“I represent Brenda Parker.””
I didn’t touch it.
“Why?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Parker claims there are unresolved questions regarding the property.””
I almost laughed.
“Questions?””
Brenda stepped closer.
“You always thought this apartment was your parents’ gift.””
I looked at her.
“It was.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“It was their mistake.””
Brandon stepped forward.
“Mom, stop.””
She ignored him.
“Your father was stubborn.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“You threatened him.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You were with my parents.””
She looked at Brandon.
Then back at me.
“You found the video.””
Not a question.
A confirmation.
My heart raced.
“You knew about the video.””
She smiled faintly.
“I knew your father recorded many things.””
The room went silent.
Many things.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Brandon.
“You were supposed to handle this.””
His face went pale.
“I tried.””
“Tried?””
She laughed.
“You became weak.””
I stared at Brandon.
“What did she mean?””
He looked broken.
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped between them.
“Tell me.””
Brenda answered.
“He was supposed to convince you to sign the transfer.””
My entire body went cold.
Brandon closed his eyes.
“I never did.””
“But you tried.””
The words came from Brenda.
“You brought him into your life. You gained his trust. You had years.””
“Mom!””
She looked at him.
“You had one job.””
I stared at Brandon.
One job.
The words echoed.
“Is that true?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time…
He didn’t lie.
“I thought I could make you understand.””
My chest tightened.
“You tried.””
“At first.””
I shook my head.
“At first?””
He stepped closer.
“I fell in love with you.””
“But you still came into my life for a reason.””
He had no answer.
Brenda turned toward the door.
“This conversation is over.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She stopped.
“You don’t get to walk away.””
She smiled.
“You think you won because you found some old notes?””
“No.””
I looked at the folder in Daniel’s hand.
“I think you’re scared.””
Her smile disappeared.
Good.
Because I finally saw it.
For years, Brenda had acted powerful.
Untouchable.
But underneath it all…
She was afraid.
“Of what?”” she asked.
I looked directly at her.
“Of what your own secrets will reveal.””
Her expression changed.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Sarah.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Emma, I found the missing document.*
My heart raced.
Then another message arrived.
*But you need to know who signed it.*
I looked down.
A photograph appeared.
A signature.
A name.
And my hands began to shake.
Because the person who signed my father’s missing document…
Was not Brenda.
May you like
Was not Brandon.
It was me.
