Chapter 9: The Man I Was Before

The man standing above us didn't look like a monster.

That was the first thing I noticed.

No mask.

No weapon in his hand.

No dramatic entrance.

Just a calm man in a dark jacket with a black triangle stitched over his chest.

That was what made him dangerous.

The worst people I had ever met rarely looked dangerous.

They looked professional.

Polite.

Reasonable.

They smiled while they destroyed lives.

"Who are you?""

My voice echoed through the underground room.

The man looked at me like he was seeing an old friend.

"Someone who has known you longer than you know yourself.""

Marcus stepped forward.

"Daniel Voss.""

The man's eyes moved to him.

"Still standing beside him.""

Marcus's face tightened.

"You should have stayed gone.""

The man smiled.

"You should have told him the truth.""

I looked between them.

"You know each other.""

Neither answered.

That was answer enough.

I looked at Sarah.

She looked away.

Another secret.

Another piece of my life hidden from me.

"Enough.""

My voice cut through the room.

Everyone stopped.

"I am done being the only person who doesn't know what's happening.""

The man tilted his head.

"Fair.""

He walked down the stairs slowly.

Sarah moved closer to me.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

That surprised me.

The man noticed.

"Interesting.""

"What?""

He looked at Sarah.

"After all these years, she still chooses you.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Stop talking like you know us.""

He smiled.

"But I do.""

He reached the bottom step.

"My name is Adrian Vale.""

The name meant nothing.

But the way Marcus reacted told me everything.

"You know him.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Yes.""

"Who is he?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Adrian did.

"I was your commanding officer.""

The room went silent.

I stared.

"No.""

Adrian nodded.

"Yes.""

"You weren't in my unit.""

"Not officially.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Explain.""

Adrian walked toward the table of files.

"I was the person your government sent when operations became too complicated.""

"The person who cleaned them up.""

His smile faded.

"The person who made problems disappear.""

I looked at the black triangle.

"Meridian.""

He nodded.

"Meridian.""

I felt anger rising.

"You were involved with Nightfall.""

"I was.""

"What happened?""

Adrian looked at me.

"You happened.""

The answer confused me.

"What does that mean?""

"You were never supposed to find the archive.""

I looked at the hidden room.

"The archive was yours?""

"No.""

He looked at Sarah.

"Your father's.""

My chest tightened.

"My father?""

Adrian nodded.

"Your father discovered Meridian years before you ever wore a uniform.""

I looked at Sarah.

She didn't deny it.

"He tried to expose them.""

"And?""

Adrian's expression changed.

"He failed.""

The room went quiet.

"How?""

"He trusted the wrong people.""

His eyes moved to me.

"People like me.""

I stared.

"You expect me to believe you?""

"No.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I expect you to remember.""

My stomach tightened.

Again.

That word.

Remember.

Adrian pulled a small device from his pocket.

Sarah immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

Adrian looked at her.

"It's time.""

Her expression changed.

"Jack doesn't need this.""

"He does.""

I looked at both of them.

"What is that?""

Nobody answered.

I took a step forward.

"What is that?""

Adrian held it up.

"A recording.""

"Of what?""

"Of you.""

The room became still.

"Impossible.""

Adrian pressed a button.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

My voice.

Younger.

Different.

Angrier.

"If you're hearing this...""

I froze.

The voice continued.

"Something went wrong.""

Marcus looked down.

Sarah closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

"Jack, if you don't remember this, it means they succeeded.""

My hands went cold.

My own voice.

Speaking to myself.

"You need to understand something.""

A pause.

"They will tell you that Michael betrayed us.""

I looked at Sarah.

"That's a lie.""

My breathing changed.

The recording continued.

"Michael tried to stop them.""

The room felt smaller.

"He found out what they were doing.""

Static.

Then:

"They weren't just changing memories.""

A pause.

"They were building replacements.""

I stared at Adrian.

"Replacements?""

He said nothing.

My recorded voice continued.

"They wanted soldiers who followed orders without hesitation.""

The words hit me.

"No.""

Sarah whispered:

"Jack...""

I ignored her.

The recording continued.

"They tested it on me.""

My heart stopped.

A memory flashed.

A white room.

Lights.

A voice asking questions.

A needle.

A hand holding my shoulder.

Then gone.

"You need to know the truth.""

My younger voice sounded exhausted.

"I wasn't their first attempt.""

Static.

"They started with Michael.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

"What?""

Adrian didn't move.

The recording continued.

"Michael wasn't corrupted.""

A pause.

"He was created.""

The words felt impossible.

"Created?""

Marcus whispered.

The recording played on.

"They took a child who understood people better than anyone.""

A breath.

"And they turned him into what they needed.""

I closed my eyes.

My brother.

The boy I thought was gone.

The boy everyone blamed.

Maybe he wasn't the monster.

Maybe he was the first victim.

The recording continued.

"If they tell you Michael is dangerous, remember this.""

A pause.

"Ask who made him dangerous.""

The recording stopped.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Finally, I looked at Adrian.

"You knew.""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"You knew everything.""

"Yes.""

"Then why?""

His expression hardened.

"Because someone had to keep the system alive.""

I almost laughed.

"There it is.""

I stepped closer.

"The excuse.""

"No.""

Adrian looked directly at me.

"The truth.""

I hated how calm he was.

"The world you think you're protecting is held together by people making impossible choices.""

"You hurt my daughter.""

His face changed slightly.

"I did not.""

"You were involved.""

"Yes.""

"Then you're responsible.""

A pause.

"Maybe.""

That answer surprised me.

"Maybe?""

Adrian looked at Violet's photograph on the wall.

"The moment I knew children were involved, I tried to stop it.""

"Too late.""

"Yes.""

The honesty again.

Always honesty after the damage.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Michael.

I opened it.

*Don't trust Adrian.*

A second message.

*But don't trust me either.*

I stared.

Then:

*The truth is worse than both of us.*

I looked up.

"Where is Michael?""

Nobody answered.

Adrian smiled slightly.

"Still looking for your brother.""

"Where is he?""

"Close.""

"That isn't an answer.""

"No.""

Adrian stepped toward the hidden exit.

"It's a warning.""

Marcus raised his weapon.

"You're not leaving.""

Adrian stopped.

Then looked at him.

"Marcus.""

A pause.

"You know what happens if he remembers everything.""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

That scared me.

"Marcus?""

He didn't respond.

I turned toward him.

"What happens?""

Silence.

Then Marcus said:

"Jack...""

His voice broke.

"You're not the only person who had memories removed.""

I froze.

"What?""

Marcus looked at me.

"They removed mine too.""

The room went silent.

"What are you talking about?""

"I remembered pieces.""

He swallowed.

"Not enough to understand.""

My head spun.

Everyone was broken.

Everyone was missing pieces.

The truth wasn't hidden.

It was scattered.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A gunshot.

Everyone froze.

Sarah's face went pale.

"No.""

Another gunshot.

Closer.

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

"They found the house.""

"Who?""

He looked at me.

"The people who don't want you to remember.""

The lights returned.

The basement door slammed shut.

Locked.

From the outside.

We were trapped.

Marcus rushed to the door.

No movement.

No response.

Then a voice came through the wood.

A voice I recognized.

Not because I had heard it today.

Because I had heard it my whole life.

My father's voice.

Impossible.

"Jack.""

I stepped back.

My father had been dead for twelve years.

But the voice continued.

"You finally opened the room.""

My blood ran cold.

Sarah whispered:

"That's not possible.""

The voice laughed softly.

"That's what we wanted you to believe.""

The lock clicked.

The door began to open.

And standing on the other side...

Was the man whose death started every lie my family ever told.

My father.

Alive.

May you like

Older.

And wearing the black triangle.
