Chapter 5: The Letter Emily Never Wanted Me to Find
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The room seemed to shrink around me.
The torn wedding dress.
The flowers scattered across the floor.
The voices of guests whispering outside.
All of it disappeared.
There was only one sentence echoing in my mind.
*Emily met Vanessa before she died.*
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Vanessa watched me carefully.
Not with sadness.
Not with guilt.
With satisfaction.
Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
“You didn’t know.””
I stared at the paper in her hand.
“Where did you get that?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
My voice became sharper.
“Where did you get my wife’s letter?””
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
“Your wife left a lot of things behind.””
“Don’t call her my wife like you knew her.””
The anger in my voice surprised even me.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“You think I didn’t know Emily?””
“No.””
“You think she was some perfect person who understood everything?””
“She was a better person than you’ll ever be.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
And for the first time, Vanessa looked wounded.
Only for a second.
Then it vanished.
“You really loved her.””
I didn’t respond.
Because that was the one thing I didn’t need to explain.
I loved Emily.
I loved her when we first met at a coffee shop because she accidentally took my order.
I loved her when she laughed so hard during our first date that she spilled water everywhere.
I loved her when we brought Sophie home from the hospital and spent three hours arguing about which stuffed animal should sit beside her crib.
I loved her when she got sick.
I loved her when she was afraid.
I loved her until the very end.
And after she was gone, I loved her enough to keep a place for her in our lives.
Vanessa saw that place.
And instead of respecting it…
She wanted to destroy it.
“Give me the letter.””
She shook her head.
“Not until you hear the truth.””
I took a step forward.
“Who are you?””
A strange sadness crossed her face.
“Someone Emily tried to warn you about.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Vanessa looked down at the paper.
“Because she didn’t trust herself.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
She unfolded the letter slightly.
Then she looked toward the door.
“Sophie is part of this too.””
My entire body tensed.
“What does my daughter have to do with Emily?””
Vanessa hesitated.
And that hesitation frightened me more than anything.
“Ask her about the night Emily got sick.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She remembers.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Sophie was three years old.””
“Children remember more than adults think.””
“Stop talking about my daughter.””
Vanessa’s eyes met mine.
“You think you protected her.””
The room became silent.
“But you don’t know what she saw.””
I wanted to dismiss it.
I wanted to call Vanessa a liar.
But something stopped me.
Because Sophie had always reacted strangely whenever Emily came up.
Not sadness.
Fear.
I had always assumed it was grief.
A child missing her mother.
But what if it was something else?
“Tell me.””
Vanessa looked surprised.
“You want to know?””
“Yes.””
She walked toward the table.
Slowly.
“You’re going to hate me either way.””
“I already do.””
That made her pause.
Then she placed the letter down.
“I met Emily six months before she died.””
I stared.
“How?””
“Through a charity event.””
Emily had volunteered at a local children’s foundation.
I knew that.
She loved helping people.
“She was worried about you.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“About me?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She thought you were too trusting.””
I almost laughed.
Coming from Vanessa, that sounded like an insult.
“What exactly did she say?””
Vanessa looked at the letter.
“She said, ‘Daniel sees the good in everyone, even when people show him who they really are.’”
My stomach tightened.
Because that sounded exactly like Emily.
She always told me I gave people too many chances.
That I searched for the best in everyone.
Even when they didn’t deserve it.
“What else?””
Vanessa’s expression darkened.
“She said if anything happened to her, I should stay away from you.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Because she knew what I was capable of.””
A chill went through me.
“Are you admitting something?””
“No.””
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying Emily misunderstood me.””
“Did she?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was not an answer.
I walked toward the table and grabbed the letter.
This time, she didn’t stop me.
The paper felt old.
Fragile.
Like holding a piece of Emily herself.
The handwriting immediately brought tears to my eyes.
I hated that.
I hated that even now, after everything, Emily could still make my heart ache with just a few written words.
I unfolded it.
But before I could read the first line, Vanessa spoke.
“Daniel.””
I looked up.
“If you read that, there’s no going back.””
I stared at her.
“There was no going back when you touched my daughter.””
Then I looked down.
The letter began.
*Daniel,*
My hands started shaking.
*If you are reading this, something has happened that made you search for answers I never wanted you to need.*
I stopped.
My heart pounded.
I continued.
*First, I need you to know that I love you. More than I knew was possible. You gave me the happiest years of my life, and Sophie gave me a reason to fight when I was tired.*
My vision blurred.
I swallowed.
Then I read the next line.
*But I need you to promise me something.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was watching me.
*Do not let anyone convince you that protecting Sophie means replacing me. She needs love, not someone trying to erase where she came from.*
My fingers tightened around the paper.
My eyes moved faster.
*There is a woman named Vanessa.*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
*If she enters your life, please be careful.*
The room went silent.
I kept reading.
*She is charming. She knows exactly what people want to hear. That is what makes her dangerous.*
My breathing became uneven.
*I met her because she approached me after the foundation event. She asked many questions about our family. Too many questions.*
I looked up.
“Why would Emily write this?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I continued.
*At first, I thought she was just curious. Then I realized she wasn’t interested in helping children. She was interested in mine.*
My blood ran cold.
*Sophie.*
The name alone felt like a warning.
*Daniel, if Vanessa ever tries to become the mother figure in Sophie’s life, watch carefully. Sophie is gentle. She wants everyone to be happy. That makes her easy to manipulate.*
I stopped reading.
Because those words described my daughter perfectly.
Emily knew her.
She knew her better than anyone.
I kept going.
*I don’t know why Vanessa is interested in us. I don’t know what she wants. But I know one thing. She asked me about our home, our finances, our routines, and your plans for the future.*
My hand went numb.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“That letter is not what you think.””
I ignored her.
The final paragraph was written differently.
Like Emily had been in a hurry.
*Daniel, if something happens and you meet Vanessa again, please don’t ignore your instincts. You have always wanted to believe people are good. I love that about you. But sometimes love means accepting when someone is dangerous.*
Then the last sentence.
The sentence that made my entire body go cold.
*And Daniel… if she ever tells you she loves Sophie, remember this: she once told me she wished Sophie had never been born.*
I stopped.
The paper slipped slightly from my hand.
“No.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I looked at her.
“You said that?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I heard movement outside the door.
Mark.
He must have heard the silence.
“Daniel?””
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
Because the woman I was supposed to marry had not just hurt my daughter.
She had been warned by my wife.
Before I ever met her.
Before I ever trusted her.
Before I ever placed a ring on her finger.
And somehow…
she still found her way into our lives.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her expression changed.
“Because Emily wasn’t innocent.””
The room froze.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“You think she wrote that letter because she was protecting you?””
She picked up the jewelry pouch.
“No.””
She held Emily’s necklace in her hand.
“She wrote it because she was afraid you would discover what she did.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“You really don’t know.””
A chill ran through me.
“Know what?””
She looked toward the door.
Toward where Sophie was waiting.
Then she whispered:
“Ask your daughter why Emily was terrified the night she died.””
And before I could answer…
my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I picked it up.
A woman’s voice came through.
A voice I had never heard before.
“Daniel?””
“Yes?””
There was a pause.
Then:
“My name is Claire. I was Emily’s closest friend.””
I froze.
“Why are you calling me?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because I found something Emily hid before she died.””
I looked at Vanessa.
Then back at the phone.
“What did you find?””
Claire was silent for a moment.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“Proof that Vanessa wasn’t the only person Emily was afraid of.””
