Chapter 1: The Sweater That Changed Everything
"There's something your husband has been hiding from you... and it's much worse than this sweater.""
Vanessa's words seemed to suck every bit of oxygen out of the room.
I stood in the middle of my best friend's living room, clutching a navy-blue sweater that suddenly felt heavier than anything I'd ever held.
My husband, Marcus, stood near the front door.
His face had gone completely white.
And for the first time in our eight years of marriage, I looked at him and wondered whether I had ever truly known the man sleeping beside me.
"What does she mean, Marcus?"" I asked.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa with an expression I'd never seen before.
It wasn't confusion.
It wasn't embarrassment.
It was fear.
"Vanessa, don't," he said quietly.
My stomach tightened.
"Don't what? Tell me the truth?""
"You're making a mistake," Marcus replied.
I laughed, but the sound came out broken.
"A mistake? I walked into my best friend's house and found your clothes on her couch. Then you walked through her front door asking for the same sweater. Exactly what part of this is a mistake?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks with both hands.
"Please sit down.""
"Don't tell me what to do.""
"You're shaking," she whispered.
"Because my husband is standing in front of me looking like he's been caught committing a crime!""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Listen, baby. I can explain the sweater.""
I raised my hand.
"Stop calling me baby.""
He froze.
That small silence hurt more than I expected.
For fifteen years, Vanessa had been my person.
She knew about my childhood, my insecurities, my father's death, and the difficult years when Marcus and I were struggling to build a life together.
She had stood beside me at my wedding.
She had held my bouquet while I promised Marcus that I would love him forever.
And now she was standing in her living room, crying because she had apparently been keeping something from me.
"How long?"" I asked again.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Almost a year.""
My fingers went numb.
"A year?""
Marcus immediately shook his head.
"That's not what she means.""
"Then what does she mean?""
"She's talking about something else.""
I turned toward Vanessa.
"Look at me.""
She slowly lifted her face.
"Have you been sleeping with my husband?""
Her lips trembled.
"I can't answer that the way you want me to.""
I felt something inside my chest crack.
"That's not a no.""
Vanessa began crying harder.
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Enough. This is getting out of control.""
I stared at him.
"You came here without telling me. You knew I was home. You knew I trusted Vanessa. And now you're standing here acting like I'm the problem?""
"You're not listening.""
"Then make me understand!""
He looked toward the hallway.
I noticed it immediately.
"What's down there?""
"Nothing," Vanessa answered quickly.
But her voice was different.
Too quick.
Too nervous.
I looked past her toward the half-open door leading to the hallway.
"Why do you keep looking over there?""
"There's nothing you need to see.""
That sentence sent a cold shiver down my spine.
I moved toward the hallway.
Marcus immediately stepped between me and the door.
"Don't go in there.""
I stopped.
For a moment, I couldn't even speak.
Then I looked at him.
"Move.""
"Please.""
"Marcus, move.""
"You're going to make this worse.""
I pushed past him.
He caught my wrist.
"Don't!""
I jerked my arm away.
"GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME!""
Vanessa rushed forward.
"Marcus, let her go!""
He released me.
I walked down the hallway, my heart pounding so violently that I could hear it in my ears.
The first door was a bathroom.
The second was a small office.
The third door stood slightly open.
I pushed it.
And stopped.
It was a bedroom.
A man's bedroom.
There was a dark leather jacket hanging behind the door. A pair of expensive shoes sat neatly beside the dresser. On the bedside table stood a half-empty bottle of Marcus's favorite cologne.
I knew that scent.
I'd bought it for him on our anniversary.
But what made my knees weak wasn't the cologne.
It was the photograph.
A framed picture sat beside the lamp.
Marcus was standing behind Vanessa, his arms wrapped around her waist.
They were smiling.
Not the polite smile people gave acquaintances.
It was the comfortable, intimate smile of two people who had shared something private.
The photograph was dated eleven months earlier.
I picked it up.
My hands were shaking.
"Vanessa...""
She appeared in the doorway.
"Please don't.""
I turned the photograph toward her.
"Where was this taken?""
She looked at the picture.
Then she closed her eyes.
"At the lake house.""
I remembered that weekend.
I'd been away visiting my mother after her surgery.
Marcus had told me he was working late that Friday and spending Saturday with his brother.
I had even called him on Sunday morning.
He'd sounded tired.
He'd told me he missed me.
I slowly lowered the photograph.
"You told me you were at home.""
Marcus appeared behind Vanessa.
"That picture doesn't prove anything.""
I looked at him.
"Then why do you have your own bedroom here?""
Neither spoke.
I noticed a folded blanket at the foot of the bed, a phone charger on the nightstand, and a glass with a faint lipstick mark.
This wasn't a place he'd visited once.
This was somewhere he belonged.
"How often do you come here?"" I whispered.
Marcus looked away.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I walked back into the living room.
The sweater was still in my hand.
"Eight years," I said.
Marcus followed me.
"What?""
"Eight years of marriage. Eight years of believing we were building something together. And you've been living another life behind my back?""
"That's not fair.""
I stared at him.
"Not fair?""
He exhaled sharply.
"You're jumping to conclusions.""
"Then tell me what I'm supposed to conclude!""
Vanessa sat down heavily on the couch.
For a few seconds, she looked at me like she wanted to say something but couldn't find the courage.
Then she reached beneath a cushion and pulled out a white envelope.
"I was going to tell you," she whispered.
I stared at it.
"What is that?""
"Something I should have given you months ago.""
Marcus's entire expression changed.
"Vanessa, put that down.""
She ignored him.
"Your husband made me promise not to tell you.""
I slowly reached for the envelope.
Inside was a printed photograph.
It showed Marcus standing outside a hospital.
He was holding a tiny baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.
A woman stood beside him.
She wasn't Vanessa.
I turned the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Marcus and our little miracle. March 14.
I looked at the date.
March 14.
My birthday.
The day Marcus had told me he was attending an important business meeting.
The day he'd sent me flowers and a message saying he wished he could spend the evening with me.
I looked up.
"Whose baby is this?""
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa began sobbing.
And then she whispered the words that made my entire world collapse.
"That's why he keeps coming here. Because the woman in that photograph is...""
Before she could finish, Marcus snatched the photograph from my hand.
"WE'RE DONE TALKING!""
He tore it straight down the middle.
I stared at the two pieces.
Then I looked at my husband.
"Who is the woman, Marcus?""
He swallowed.
"Her name is Rebecca.""
"Who is Rebecca?""
His eyes filled with tears.
May you like
And finally, he said something I would never forget.
"She's the woman who gave birth to my son.""
