Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Rachel Bennett arrived at Richard's office at 8:15 the following morning.

She carried a black leather briefcase and wore a dark blue suit.

She looked to be in her early thirties.

Her expression was serious, but when she saw me, something softened.

"Daniel Carter?""

I stood.

"Yes.""

She offered her hand.

"I'm Rachel Bennett.""

I shook it.

"Thank you for coming.""

She looked at the photograph of my father and hers lying on the conference table.

"My father talked about Robert constantly.""

I glanced at the picture.

"They worked together for years.""

"More than people realized.""

Rachel opened her briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

"This is what my father left me.""

Richard examined the envelope.

"Has it been opened?""

"No. I was instructed not to open it unless the Whitmore family attempted to claim ownership of the predictive engine system.""

She placed it on the table.

The envelope had been sealed with a strip of old adhesive tape.

My name was written across the front.

Not Daniel Carter.

Just Danny.

My throat tightened.

"Can I open it?""

Rachel nodded.

I carefully removed the tape.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small flash drive.

The letter began:

Danny,

If this reaches you, then something has gone wrong.

I looked up.

Rachel sat quietly.

I continued reading.

Your father was the best engineer I ever worked with. He understood machines in a way I never could. I understood the mathematics. He understood how to make the mathematics work in the real world.

We built the predictive system together.

But Edward Whitmore wanted more than a partnership.

I turned the page.

He wanted the invention without the inventors.

When Robert refused to transfer ownership, Edward threatened to destroy the project. He said no small business could survive against a corporation like his.

Robert refused to surrender.

Then Edward offered me something.

I stopped reading.

Rachel looked down.

"What did he offer your father?"" I asked.

"Money. A position inside Whitmore Technologies. And a promise that his name would be removed from the patent dispute.""

"Did he accept?""

"No.""

I looked at the letter again.

I refused because I knew Robert had built the original system. But I made a mistake. I kept a copy of the engineering files on a private server. I thought it would protect us.

Edward found out.

Three weeks later, I was accused of leaking confidential information.

I felt my chest tighten.

Rachel spoke quietly.

"My father lost his job. His professional reputation was destroyed. He spent years trying to prove that the original invention belonged to Robert and him.""

"Why didn't he go to court?""

"He tried. But he couldn't afford the legal fight. Edward had powerful lawyers.""

I looked at her.

"Was the accident connected to Whitmore?""

Rachel's expression hardened.

"My father never believed it was an accident.""

The words hung in the room.

Richard leaned forward.

"Do you have evidence?""

"Not enough to make an accusation. But he left several documents that raise questions.""

She removed another folder.

Inside were copies of old emails.

One came from Edward Whitmore.

Michael, you are making a serious mistake. You know what happens to people who interfere with business arrangements that have already been settled.

Another email was dated three days before Michael's death.

We need the original technical files recovered immediately. Robert must not retain any copies.

I felt sick.

"Did you give these to the police?""

"At the time, I was twenty-four. I had just lost my father. I didn't understand the full situation.""

She looked at me.

"By the time I discovered what had happened with the patent, the company had already moved on.""

Evelyn examined the emails.

"These could be relevant to the ownership dispute. We'll need to authenticate them.""

Rachel nodded.

"That's why I came.""

She opened the small flash drive.

"My father made a digital backup of the original development records. He believed the red toolbox contained the matching hardware logs.""

I looked at her.

"Hardware logs?""

"Every test performed on the original prototype was recorded. Dates, component numbers, software revisions, and user access.""

I remembered Sam's words.

The hidden recording system.

Rachel continued.

"If we can recover those records, we can establish exactly when the invention was created and who had access to it.""

Evelyn connected the drive to a secure computer.

A folder appeared.

Inside were dozens of files.

Technical diagrams.

Email correspondence.

Laboratory notes.

And one document titled:

*ORIGINAL PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT LOG — CARTER/BENNETT PROJECT.*

Evelyn opened it.

The first entry was dated 2006.

The final entry was dated 2012.

My father had been developing the system for six years before the patent was approved.

I stared at the screen.

"Can this prove ownership?""

"It can establish a strong timeline," Evelyn replied.

"But the hardware logs would make the evidence much stronger.""

Rachel nodded.

"That's why we need the red case.""

Richard checked his phone.

"I have an update.""

He turned the screen toward us.

It showed a photograph of a red metal toolbox inside a storage room.

The image had been sent anonymously to the office.

Beneath it was a message.

Your father's records are here. Come alone if you want them.

I stared at the photograph.

The broken silver latch.

The faded paint.

It was unmistakable.

"Where did this come from?"" I asked.

Richard shook his head.

"Unknown sender.""

Rachel leaned closer.

"Look at the background.""

Behind the toolbox was a white wall with a blue security label.

She zoomed in.

"That's the old Whitmore research warehouse.""

Evelyn looked up.

"How do you know?""

"My father worked there briefly after leaving the repair shop. I recognize the storage area.""

Richard shook his head.

"We're not sending Daniel there alone.""

I looked at the photograph.

The case was real.

And someone inside Whitmore had contacted us.

"Can we arrange a controlled recovery?"" I asked.

Evelyn nodded.

"We'll need to coordinate with the appropriate authorities and ensure the evidence is preserved. Nobody should attempt to retrieve it informally.""

Richard made several calls.

While he worked, my phone rang.

Olivia.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel noticed.

"That's her?""

"Yes.""

"Answer it.""

I hesitated.

Then I accepted the call.

"Hello?""

"Daniel, please. We need to talk.""

"About what?""

"Alexander found out that Rachel contacted you.""

I glanced at Rachel.

"How?""

"I don't know. But he's furious.""

"Why?""

"Because she has documents that could hurt the company.""

I leaned back.

"Then perhaps the company should have behaved honestly.""

Olivia began crying.

"Daniel, please listen. Alexander wants to meet you.""

"Why?""

"He wants to settle everything before the announcement.""

"He's already offered me money.""

"This is different.""

"How?""

She lowered her voice.

"He knows about the red toolbox.""

My heart skipped.

I looked at Richard.

"How does he know?""

"Because someone told him.""

"Who?""

Silence.

Then Olivia whispered:

"I did.""

I closed my eyes.

"Of course you did.""

"Daniel, I didn't know what was inside it. Alexander told me it was just old equipment.""

"Where is it now?""

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not!""

Her voice cracked.

"Daniel, I swear, I only told him that you were looking for it. I didn't know someone would send you that photograph.""

I took a breath.

"Why are you calling me?""

"Because I want to help you.""

"Why now?""

"Because I found something.""

"What?""

She hesitated.

"A copy of the original transfer agreement.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Where?""

"In Alexander's private office.""

"How did you get it?""

"He asked me to prepare the documents for tomorrow's announcement. I found the original file in his locked cabinet.""

I looked at Richard.

He gestured for me to keep talking.

"Does it contain Michael's signature?""

"Yes.""

"And my father's?""

"Yes.""

"Are they real?""

Olivia started crying.

"No.""

The answer was almost inaudible.

I stared at the wall.

"What?""

"They're both forged.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

Evelyn immediately began taking notes.

"How do you know?"" I asked.

"Because Alexander told me.""

I felt my blood turn cold.

"When?""

"Last night.""

"What exactly did he say?""

"He said the original transfer agreement had never been signed. He said the company needed a clean ownership record before the global partnership announcement.""

"Who created the forged signatures?""

"I don't know.""

"Olivia.""

"I swear I don't know.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why are you telling me this?""

She was silent for several seconds.

Then she said:

"Because Alexander told me something else.""

"What?""

"He said once the announcement was over, he was going to make sure you never had a chance to challenge the patent again.""

I looked at Richard.

He immediately wrote down her words.

"Did he threaten me?""

"He said you were becoming a problem.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Where are you right now?""

"At the research center.""

"Are you alone?""

"Yes.""

"Then leave.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because Alexander has my passport.""

The room fell silent.

I stood.

"What do you mean he has your passport?""

"He told me he needed it for the international partnership paperwork. But when I asked for it back, he refused.""

"Call the police.""

"I'm afraid.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Olivia, listen carefully. You need to get somewhere safe. Don't confront him. Don't try to retrieve anything yourself.""

She began sobbing.

"Daniel, I know I don't deserve your help.""

I didn't answer.

"But I have something else you need to know.""

"What?""

"Alexander has been looking for your father's original prototype for years.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because the commercial platform isn't complete.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She leaned closer.

Olivia continued.

"The system Whitmore is about to announce has a serious technical weakness. Your father's original machine contains a calibration method they couldn't reproduce.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"Where is that method?""

"In the red toolbox.""

Rachel whispered, "The original hardware logs.""

Olivia heard her.

"Yes. That's what Alexander wants.""

I looked at the photograph again.

The toolbox.

My father's final safeguard.

Then Olivia said something that made my blood run cold.

"Daniel, there's another reason Alexander is desperate to get that case.""

"What?""

She took a shaky breath.

"Your father recorded a conversation with Edward Whitmore.""

I froze.

"What conversation?""

"The one where Edward offered to buy the invention and threatened to destroy him if he refused.""

I stared at Rachel.

She slowly nodded.

Olivia continued.

"And Daniel, the recording doesn't just expose Edward.""

My voice dropped.

"Who else does it expose?""

She whispered:

"Alexander.""

Before I could ask another question, I heard a crash on her end of the call.

Then a man's voice.

"Who are you talking to?""

Olivia gasped.

"Nobody!""

The phone fell.

I heard footsteps.

Then Alexander's voice came through clearly.

"Give me that phone, Olivia.""

The call disconnected.

I stared at the screen.

Richard immediately stood.

"Daniel, we're contacting the authorities.""

But my phone vibrated again.

A final message appeared from Olivia.

He knows I told you. Please don't let him take the red case.

Then another message arrived.

This one was from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Alexander Whitmore was standing beside the red toolbox.

In his hand was a lighter.

May you like

And beneath the photograph were six words:

Your father's secrets end tonight, Daniel.
