Chapter 10: The Truth I Chose To Keep

For twenty-five years, I believed my life was a story written by other people.

My father decided what I should know.

My mother decided what I should remember.

The Bannons decided what I should believe.

Patrick decided what I should see.

Even Emmett Carbone, the man who saved me from a locked estate and carried me into a world of secrets, had chosen what pieces of the truth I was allowed to hold.

But standing in that lake house, staring at the woman who had controlled everything from the shadows, I finally understood something.

A person could be protected so carefully that protection became another kind of prison.

And I was done living in one.

Patrick's mother stood in the doorway.

Eleanor Bannon.

The woman who had kissed my forehead after my wedding.

The woman who cried when Cody was born.

The woman who called me the daughter she never had.

She looked exactly the same as she always had.

Perfect silver hair.

Elegant coat.

Calm smile.

That was the most terrifying part.

She didn't look like someone who had destroyed lives.

She looked like someone who had spent years convincing people she never could.

My father stepped in front of me.

"Stay behind me.""

The old words almost made me laugh.

Even now.

Even after everything.

Everyone still wanted to put me somewhere safe.

"No.""

My father turned.

"Jillian.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

My voice was stronger this time.

"I spent my entire life behind someone.""

I looked at him.

"Behind you.""

Then my mother.

"Behind you.""

Then Emmett.

"Behind you.""

Finally, Eleanor.

"Behind all of you.""

I stepped forward.

"I'm done.""

Nobody moved.

Eleanor smiled slightly.

"Your father was right about one thing.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"You are stronger than he expected.""

My father looked at her with hatred.

"Don't talk to her.""

Eleanor ignored him.

"You have no idea what your father did.""

I laughed softly.

"That is the problem, isn't it?""

I looked around the room.

"Nobody ever thought I could handle the truth.""

Eleanor tilted her head.

"And now you think you can?""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"I think I deserve the chance.""

For the first time, her expression changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

She realized something.

I was no longer the child they were protecting.

I was the person they had all been afraid of.

"Where is Cody?""

The question came immediately.

Her smile disappeared.

"Patrick has him.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

I almost believed her.

Almost.

Then my father spoke.

"She's lying.""

Eleanor looked at him.

"You always were too emotional when it came to your daughter.""

"And you always were too cruel when it came to your family.""

The tension between them filled the room.

I looked at my father.

"Tell me everything.""

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked less like a powerful man with secrets and more like the father I remembered.

"I discovered what my family had built.""

He glanced at Malcolm.

"The Bannon empire was never just business.""

Malcolm looked down.

"It was influence.""

My father continued.

"They collected secrets. They controlled people. They destroyed anyone who threatened them.""

He looked at Eleanor.

"She inherited it.""

Eleanor smiled.

"I improved it.""

My stomach turned.

"You admit it?""

"Why wouldn't I?""

She walked farther into the room.

"The world is controlled by people who know how to use information. Your father was naive.""

"No.""

My father shook his head.

"He was human.""

Eleanor looked at him.

"And look where that got you.""

The words were cruel.

But they revealed something.

A belief.

She genuinely thought she was right.

"You killed my grandmother.""

I looked at Eleanor.

The room went silent.

She didn't deny it.

"I removed a problem.""

My hands tightened.

"And my father?""

"He made his choice.""

"You shot him.""

"No.""

Her answer was immediate.

"I didn't.""

I looked at my father.

He nodded slowly.

"She's telling the truth.""

I stared.

"What?""

"She didn't pull the trigger.""

The truth felt impossible.

"Then who did?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Patrick's voice came from the phone on the table.

Everyone turned.

I didn't even realize it was still connected.

"Me.""

My blood froze.

The speaker crackled.

Patrick.

My husband.

The father of my child.

My entire body went cold.

"Patrick.""

His voice was quiet.

"I'm sorry.""

I almost hated those words.

Because they were too late.

"Where is Cody?""

"Safe.""

"Let me talk to him.""

A pause.

Then:

"Mom?""

I broke.

"Cody.""

My knees weakened.

"Baby, are you okay?""

"I'm okay.""

His voice sounded small.

But alive.

"I miss you.""

I closed my eyes.

"I miss you too.""

A few seconds passed.

Then Patrick spoke again.

"I never wanted this.""

My anger returned.

"You never wanted what?""

"To become like them.""

I looked at Eleanor.

Then at my father.

"Then why did you?""

Silence.

Finally:

"Because I was raised to.""

The answer was painfully simple.

"I was taught that love was weakness. That family came before everything. That secrets were protection.""

His voice cracked.

"Then I met you.""

I said nothing.

"I thought I could change.""

"Did you?""

"No.""

The honesty hurt.

"I thought if I kept you close, I could keep you safe.""

"You watched me.""

"Yes.""

"You lied to me.""

"Yes.""

"You used Cody.""

"No.""

The answer came sharply.

"Never Cody.""

I believed him.

And somehow that made everything harder.

Because monsters were easy.

People were not.

"Why did you take him?""

"Because my mother found out about the records.""

Eleanor's expression changed.

Patrick continued.

"She wanted the evidence destroyed.""

"And you?""

"I wanted to stop her.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"You?""

She smiled.

"You always were a disappointment, Patrick.""

The line went silent.

Then Patrick said:

"Jillian, listen carefully.""

I held the phone closer.

"The box was never the evidence.""

Everyone froze.

"What?""

"The records.""

He continued.

"They were a trap.""

My father looked confused.

"What are you talking about?""

Patrick's voice lowered.

"Your father knew someone would eventually find the chip.""

He paused.

"So he created something else.""

I looked at the necklace.

"What?""

"A copy.""

Silence.

"The real evidence is somewhere else.""

My heart sank.

"Where?""

Patrick answered:

"Inside the person who knows the truth.""

Nobody moved.

Then my father whispered:

"No.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

His face changed.

Like he finally understood.

"He didn't hide the evidence.""

My father looked at me.

"He hid the witness.""

My breath caught.

"Who?""

My father looked at Eleanor.

Then at me.

"You.""

The room went silent.

I shook my head.

"No.""

But memories came rushing back.

The lake house.

The argument.

My mother crying.

The night my father died.

The missing pieces.

"The trauma.""

My mother whispered.

"You remembered.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"The night your father was attacked.""

Her voice broke.

"You were there.""

I felt dizzy.

"No.""

"Yes.""

I touched my head.

Fragments.

A gunshot.

My father falling.

Patrick standing nearby.

Eleanor's voice.

And a small detail.

A detail I had forgotten.

A face.

The person holding the weapon.

Not Patrick.

Not Eleanor.

Someone else.

Someone nobody had mentioned.

I looked at my father.

"You knew.""

He nodded.

"I was trying to protect you from remembering.""

"Why?""

"Because the person who shot me was someone you loved.""

My heart stopped.

The door behind us creaked.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Broken.

Someone I recognized from photographs.

Patrick's father.

Alive.

My father's voice became barely audible.

"Because the person who shot me...""

He looked at me.

"...was Patrick's father.""

The room exploded into chaos.

Eleanor turned.

Malcolm reached for the door.

Emmett moved toward me.

But I didn't move.

Because suddenly, the entire story made sense.

The lies.

The protection.

The fear.

Everyone had been protecting me from one memory.

One moment.

One truth.

I looked at Patrick through the phone.

"Where are you?""

A long pause.

Then:

"At the place where it started.""

"The estate?""

"No.""

His voice became quiet.

"The hospital.""

I froze.

"What hospital?""

"The one where your father was supposed to have died.""

My father stepped forward.

"Patrick.""

But Patrick continued.

"Jillian, you need to come here.""

"Why?""

"Because there is one final thing you need to see.""

The call ended.

For the first time all night, nobody told me what to do.

Nobody told me where to go.

Nobody tried to stop me.

I looked at the people around me.

My father.

My mother.

Emmett.

Malcolm.

Eleanor.

A family built on secrets.

A family built on lies.

A family that had spent years deciding my fate.

Then I looked at the necklace in my hand.

The same necklace my father gave me.

The same necklace that carried the truth.

I closed my fingers around it.

And I understood.

The evidence was never the thing my father wanted to protect.

It was me.

The only person who could decide what happened next.

I walked toward the door.

Emmett followed.

"Jillian.""

I stopped.

He looked at me.

"Are you sure?""

For once, someone asked me a question instead of giving me an order.

I nodded.

"No.""

He seemed surprised.

I smiled sadly.

"I'm terrified.""

Then I looked toward the road.

"But I'm going anyway.""

Because running saved my life once.

May you like

But facing the truth would decide what I did with it.

And this time, nobody was going to choose for me.
